I will be buying a new optic in a couple of months, I'm looking for the most durable, rugged optic on the market. I don't care about the weight, could weight 10lbs for all I care. When I mean durable and rugged, I mean Military testing or hard hunting or better. This might offend some people (especially these days) but please don't recommend optics that are "very durable for PRS matches". I've seen and been to PRS matches and my 10 year old niece is harder on gear than what I've seen at these matches and besides, little 6mm calibers to me do not make for a solid test on a scope's toughness.
I've actually been researching this for over 3 years and know that Schmidt & Bender, Nightforce and the Razor GenII will take what I will put it through. I was going to go with a Nightforce but some of the line have been killed by Scar 17s and FALs. I have two Scars that I love to shoot a few times a year and both have killed a couple of optics already. My goal is to reach a mile with one of the Scars (getting close) so I need at least 15 mag because the target will be under 20". I tried a Kahles K624i and the piece of shit lasted 40rds before it died, $100 Weaver and Millet scopes lasted much longer. To make things worse, I'm a big gorilla and break things easily, if it hasn't been busted, let me have it for 5 min. and it will be. I researched the Kahles before buying and actually went to their small booth at the back of the Swarovski booth at Shot Show and asked them about it, they blew smoke up my ass and told me "sure sure of course it'll handle the Scar". I wouldn't be that pissed had Swarovski taken care of me, but they beat around the bush and luckily I was able to return it and go with a Razor Gen II that has been great for over a year. I was going to go with another Razor but the sammich' maker wants me to try another brand, she wants German optics for some goofy reason and I'm now considering either an S&B and she wants a Tangent Theta but I'm not spending that much unless I personally see it survive a bomb blast.
Never mind what it's going to be for or the usual questions, I don't fall into that stuff, I use tools for whatever I might want too use them at certain points even if it's not the best choice for the task. I'm looking for durability first and something I will be able to put on a Scar 17 from time to time or on a FAL, might also do some hunting around upstate NY which usually ends up with things getting banged up. The scope is mostly going to be on a 300 win mag.
I also have a question about S&Bs, I've looked through most of these optics at Shot Show for the last 500 years and if you've been to Shot, you know that some areas of that decrepit Sands floor are dark, especially near the block houses on Hall B so it's difficult to judge. For some reason Trijicon optics like Acogs and Vcogs look the best there to me but that's probably because there's more light at that end of the hall. My question is, how are S&Bs at lower magnifications around 10-15? I saw a couple of reviews saying that they're not that good at lower magnifications until you get to 20 or so. ANy truth to that?
