That seems to be the safe money bet - since he was bitten by a dog and at least one expert witness said his injuries were more in line with a beating than being hit by a car .

You’ve most likely nailed it except you forgot the part about dead guy and ex partner being investigated a while back for being somehow involved in a stolen dog/ fighting dog ring . And look how hard the state fought to suppress the evidence of dog bite punctures on dead guy . A KEY piece of evidence everyone seems to be missing

Very reminiscent of the Alec Baldwin trial where the state fucked up the evidence and lead to a mistrial. The judge in this case needs to declare a mistrial as well.
