Suppressors Are suppressors worth it?

After much debate on my needs and wants, (more wants than needs) I settled on the 5R with a 20" threaded muzzle. I am going to order it this week.

My next debate is on a suppressor. My intended use is so I do not disturb the neighbors too much while shooting.

Do I have to use subsonic loads? And if I do not, is a suppressor a waste of money? I really do not know a whole lot about these.

Does anyone know anything about the YHM Phantom stainless steel? The guy also told me I could use it on my AR as well.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They are not movie quiet if thats what your going for.
They do make it extremely nice to be able to shoot all day without hearing protection. There's also something to be said about being able to head out and not bother everyone around. i.e. The the less you are bothering others, the less likely they will be to bother you.

Then there's the hearing safety aspects - to folks that say suppressors are expensive, I ask how much do hearing aids cost? Remember, it's not just your hearing, but the hearing of everybody around the shooter.

i always wear hearing protection. even when i shoot my .22's. even with a suppressor, i will still probably wear my muffs.

i am just worried about the overall noise. less is more in this case.

when i was doing some reading, someone said if you do not use subsonic loads, then suppressors are worthless because of the sonic boom. this might be me being ignorant, but while hunting, i always hear the muzzle blast, but no sonic boom.

A suppressor will not help for the sonic crack, but it will reduce the muzzle report. You can hear the muzzle report at the shooter but not the sonic crack because of your position as the shooter. If you could position yourself in another area where the muzzle report was not so evident, the sonic crack would still be audible.

The suppressor would reduce the noise of the muzzle report, which is the majority of the noise present when shooting. The sonic crack is unavoidable when using supersonic ammunition.

It is noticeable. Do a search on here or YouTube. There are lots of videos of suppressed weapons firing supersonic and subsonic back to back. Video cannot capture all of it, but you'll get the idea.

.30-cal can will not be as effective for 5.56 (I'm not sure how much less effective -- somebody else can chime in there).

The particular can you get matters -- a can designed for precision bolt guns may not be designed to withstand the heat from rapid 5.56 fire. You can get one that is, but it will likely be heavier and/or have other trade-offs.

I got my first suppressor, a YHM Phantom, for my .308 last year...some of the best money I've ever spent. Makes the gun much more pleasant to shoot with less recoil and noise. I like it, and my only real complaint would be the weight factor. That being said, if I were looking for a suppressor for my AR, I'd probably just buy a second suppressor rather than trying to use the .30 cal can that I have on the AR.

I use a .30 cal can on my 5.56. It works. Most people say that the overbore with the 308 can and 5.56 round are made up for by the extra length of the 308 can. Do keep in mind though that Ti suppressors are generally not to be used in rapid fire, so if you get a Ti suppressor for your 308, you have to be careful using it with a 5.56 semi auto.
Shooting sub-sonic versus super-sonic...Obviously super-sonic is going to be much louder, but the suppressor is still worth it.

It is very important to realize that suppressing the sound is only ONE benefit of a suppressor. They suppresses muzzle flash, which isn't usually particularly useful to us civilian shooters, but it also reduces recoil! The recoil reduction helps you get back on target faster for quicker follow up shots.

Suppressors are DEFINITELY worth the extra money! I've got four now, and as soon as I have money again (someday, *sigh*) I'll be picking up at LEAST one more!

As a former military sniper, I can't help but think that the .338LM has an effective range of nearly 1800 meters or longer. If it's quiet on my end, there isn't going to be any sound but bullet flight at even 400 meters. In a military application, the rifle has achieved zero signature.

How much more quiet could it possibly need to be?

Jump into the GB section and poke around. There's almost always a deal on suppressors and I got the same YHM you're looking at for considerably less than most retailers. If you want to run a 30 cal YHM on your AR, you would just need the 5.56 QD Phantom hider with the proper thread pitch.

I ordered mine after a friend's obnoxious muzzlebrake gave me temporary hearing damage in my left ear. That was about 6 months ago and it's just now getting back to 100%.

Behind the rifle it sounded great. My point was that when you have a 1800M system, movie quiet is something you can't hear at 400M. More likely a person would be hard pressed to hear 132DB at 200 meters in front of the gun.

Your comment sounds like an argument against the suppressor being worth it and you have what? 20 sound suppressors? Actions sometimes speak louder than words.

i really didn't plan on a suppressor. i went to stop into one of the local shops to inquire about the FFL process of buying off the internet, but they went out of business (i didn't go there much, they were more into WW2 stuff. in fact, i haven't been there in years). well, a new one opened the next block down. and they had suppressors. i didn't think they were legal in PA, but guess what, they are!!! so i started to look into it. and now i want one.

i look at it this way, i can go into a hissy fit about the wait time, and never have one, or i can wait a few months and have one.

if they reduce recoil by that much, then now i am thinking about the 300 win mag instead of the 308. any thoughts on that?

Thoughts on that? Why not. The SAKO TRG 42 in the video has similar recoil with the OEM brake, as with our suppressor. Check it out below.

As far as your philosophy, I did that myself years ago (six months!!!) and then a year and a half later I wanted a suppressor again and realized I could have already had one for an entire calendar year. If you want something that the government imposes a waiting period on, the best time to buy is now.

If you have the means then suppressors are absolutely worth it. The sound of the bullet on a 5.56 is just about like a 22LR unsuppressed, the .308 is a little louder. I have a YHM QD 7.62 titanium. I use it on both my 308 AR and all my 5.56's. The 5.56 through the 308 suppressor is a bit quieter than the .308. The sound of the bullet passing by (20 feet away) at 50 yds is almost the same as what you hear standing 20 ft from the shooter. Like somebody shooting a 22LR unsuppressed 20 ft away. So I would say almost ALL the muzzle blast will be taken care of, just the bullet breaking the sound barrier is left. With subsonic rounds, my ARs sound like a BB gun-and would be quieter than that if I had a way to cut the gas off to the action.

I bought mine so as not to annoy the neighbors too, but it's so much more enjoyable to shoot that I'm going top have to re-stock my reloading supplies soon.

On a QD suppressor you will have a proprietary flash suppressor or muzzle brake that screws on your threads and the suppressor attaches to that attachment. SOME may not work that way, but all I've seen use this method.

I will add that the weight savings of titanium were worth the extra money to me. Some will argue that they don't withstand heat as well etc, but I can't see where that matters unless you do a lot of full auto mag dumps.

edit to add: I personally haven't noticed much recoil reduction, but my ARs don't recoil much anyway-even the 308

Corey, the best thing you could do is to take a trip out to Thunder Valley to either attend one of their matches or just watch (you really ought to shoot though). Plenty of guys shoot cans and it would do you good to get your hands on a couple and get to listen to them. Most guys are more than happy to let you send a couple rounds down range as well. The good cans pretty much sound the same on the same rifle so it comes down to weight and cost as the deciding factor (if you want one after being around them).

Look them up on Mapquest. Should be 2 hrs or less.

Corey, dont know if your doing any hunting or just shooting on the range but a suppressor sounds alot different in the field than it does around buildings, roofs, and barricades! They tend to be even more quite in the snow than on hard ground! We did a coyote calling contest in SD yesterday and my partner shot a coyote 40 yards away from me and I didnt even know it! Not movie quite but still remarkable! Get one, you will be happy you did!

QD=quick detach. It's the easiest method for using the same suppressor on multiple weapons. The proprietary flash hider is all that's necessary.

You won't know if a load change is needed until you screw the can on to your barrel. So far, its a mixed bag. Some get away with the same load while others need to tweak. If you think about it, you'll be hanging an additional 14-28 oz off the end of your barrel so, the harmonics will change.

Maybe Im misunderstanding what you are saying but if you say that at 400M there is hardly any sound, then you are wrong. Unless you are shooting sub sonics there is still one helluva crack at 400 meters due to supersonic flight. If you dont believe me, go out to 400 meters and see what it sounds like when a round passes by. Again, maybe I am misunderstanding your statement and if so, I apologize.

He is touting all of the signature reducing characteristics, and the key there is that signature implies something that imparts knowledge about where the shot came from not solely that a shot occurred.

Obviously if you hear the supersonic crack, see the impact, or you or your buddy gets hit you'll know you are getting shot at. But with a can and sufficient distance you may not know where from.

If you already own a .308 can....you can use that on a .223 with a thread adaptor. It doesn't matter if its an all Titanium can or something else...either gun will have a drastically reduces muzzle report and recoil. Once you shoot a suppressed weapon shooting unsuppresed just feels wrong.

Dont piss of the neighbors in your case. You are looking at up to a 50db reduction depending on what you are shooting. You do not need to shoot subsonic ammo, although you can if you want to pay the huge prices for them.

Ask around and see if someone will let you shoot a suppresed gun and you can judge for yourself. For me, the can is as important as the rifle and the optic.

Also, there are plenty of systems that can tell where a shot, bark, cough, or any other noise came from. Many of these are already employed in large metropolitan areas to notify authority's in the event that a shot is fired.

In my experience (not opinion), if you are downrange and a bullet flies past your position at supersonic speed, you WILL hear the supersonic crack from the same direction where the bullet passed closest to you. If the bullet passed by 20 feet to your right, it will sound like somebody fired a 22LR while standing 20 feet to your right. Once the bullet passes you, the noise will seem like an echo following the bullet downrange. You will hear absolutely nothing from the direction of the shooter because the crack from 20 feet to your right will overwhelm any sound from the shooter's direction, even if he is as close as 50 yds. This test was done by me and a TRUSTED buddy with an AR type 308 with no way to turn the gas off to keep the gun from cycling. Try as we might, we could never hear the action noise or anything else from the shooter's position due to the sound of the bullet drowning all that out. Without any tracking equipment or seeing the bullet strike, it would be pretty hard to figure out where it came from.

I shoot my 223 with my .308 can ....my .22 with my .223 can and you get the idea , yea the .308 can is not quite as quiet on the .223 but it still makes a Big difference over not suppressed at all .. my .308 with suppressor and full power loads is about as loud as a .22mag/.17HMR
.223 is close in the same boat > about like a .22LR

like posted above , go back to the suppressor dealer perhaps ? try and find some shooters in your area and check it out first hand , then decide whether it's worth it to YOU ...
I think it will be ....almost everyone that has shot suppressed will not go back ;-)

I don't know which part of my statement you say doesn't apply 'generically' so I'll just respond with this:

I think the key here is that Griffin Armament was talking about suppressing a rifle shot, not a bullet in flight. You are including the bullet in your discussion but others, including he and I, are not. Griffin also allowed that bullet flight noise would still be heard downrange - obviously this includes supersonic cracks if the round is supersonic. His statement about the quietness was for the report of the rifle.

The OP asked about reducing noise that his neighbors could hear. Obviously having a suppressor is a huge improvement regardless of supersonic crack or not. I also doubt he will be shooting his rounds over their heads so there's even more benefit since the vestiges of the supersonic cracks they hear will have had air to dissipate in.

I don't know why you brought up bullet/bark tracking systems as I do not see how that applies to the OP's question. That's quite a non-generic situation...

Well, to get back on point.

I think they are very "much worth it"
On the level that I have restructured the order in which I purchase pieces for a build.

Suppressor first
Glass second
Rifle third

I do this because I have no intention of ever shooting without a can and I don't want to be sitting there with a gun, waiting for paperwork to clear.

I do plenty of research first, so that each suppressor can fill multiple roles, but the fact remains...when I start to save up some $$, it's for a can.

i am definitely in the hunt for a suppressor. the guy i talked to said he didn't know too much about rifles and suppressors, yet he sells them. (?!?) he said he is more familiar with the handgun suppressors.

I would suggest trying cocaine first. It will be cheaper in the long run.

If you get a suppressor you will want one for all your guns. Then you will have to buy barrels for them or have them threaded. Then after a while (because you will be around class 3 items) you will start wanting a machine gun. It never stops and soon you will be single and living in a van down by the river.

The gun end of my backyard 100 yard range is very close to my neighbor's house (around 25 yards away). I built a shooting tube (~10 Feet long) out of old tires with dirt piled over top. When I shoot my suppressed full power .223 loads through the tube my neighbor says all he can hear is the sonic crack. He was really impressed - he's a shooter so he's not uptight about it. He might get annoyed if I used it more often but I just use it for chronographing loads - after all its only 100 yards.

I hear a rubbery sound from the tube but I think that is because I am right there.

I'm not sure my 300 WM will be so quiet but hopefully within a month I can find out.

Yes you will hear the sonic crack if the bullet flies any where near by you. Subs are for sissies.

And I've experienced bolt operated weapons that really push the envelope- a 132DB .338LM sounds pretty movie quiet to me.

As a former military sniper, I can't help but think that the .338LM has an effective range of nearly 1800 meters or longer. <span style="font-weight: bold">If it's quiet on my end, there isn't going to be any sound but bullet flight at even 400 meters</span>. In a military application, the rifle has achieved zero signature.

How much more quiet could it possibly need to be?

The suppressor reduces recoil by 40%, eliminates dust signature, nearly eliminates muzzle rise and flash signature. That's a pretty versatile group of functional characteristics for one accessory item to have. </div></div>

Maybe Im misunderstanding what you are saying but if you say that at 400M there is hardly any sound, then you are wrong. Unless you are shooting sub sonics there is still one helluva crack at 400 meters due to supersonic flight. If you dont believe me, go out to 400 meters and see what it sounds like when a round passes by. Again, maybe I am misunderstanding your statement and if so, I apologize. </div></div>

What the gentlemen is referring to is that the SHOOTER and rifle have achieved zero signature from a military standpoint by using a suppressor. This is important for the dudes that shoot a targets that could and do shoot back. Will the people in the group being shot at know they are being shot at? Yes. Weather that is because of sonic crack or because one just got knocked down by a 300 grain 338 projectile, it is irrelevant. What matters is that the shooter, if concealed well, will stay invisible to a target even at the relatively short range of 200-400 meters. Why? Because his suppressor has eliminated dust signature, muzzle flash AND the muzzle blast, which is the main source people and animals use to figure out what direction they are being shot at from. So, put simply, it is not hollywood, whisper, assassin quiet at 400 meters, but for all military practical considerations it has kept the shooter's location invisible. That is very cool.

They are definitely worth it! Do yourself a favor and get a .22 suppressor when you order a rifle can. They are hollywood quiet and you will end up shooting it more then anything else. Just my experience at least.

believe-you-me, i am getting a can!!! ya'll talked me into it! i'm thinking in the next few weeks i should have enough things sold to get one. (i jacked my back up at work, and i have to sell my race bikes and gear, and my ice hockey stuff)

the dealer i was talking to said i have to buy the can first, do the paper work, and he will keep it until the paper work comes back. is this normal?

does anyone know of dealers in the pittsburgh, pa area that i can talk to?

should i get a can that threads directly to the 5/8-24 muzzle? or put the flash hider on, then screw the can on. this is the QD, right? so i can swap it from my AR to my 5R?

to me, having 2 things that thread onto the same part just seems like more things to come loose. i am a minimalist. to me, less is more. but then again, i am new to this. this is why i am asking these questions.

again, thanks to everyone involved. even with the debating, i am still learning from both points of view.

You paying money and then waiting for 6 months to get what you paid for is normal in this NFA business.

YES--get the QD and adapters for all your threaded weapons. Properly installed and torqued adapters (some recomend loctite or something similar?) will prevent your adapter coming loose.
I forgot to re-read thru the thread before hitting reply, but if there's a possibility of you getting a 30 cal weapon anytime in the future, go ahead and get the 30 cal suppressor now. It will work admirably on your 556 weapons as well. Mine is quieter on the 556's than it is on 30 cal.

Mine is the YHM QD, and I find if I overtighten the suppressor on the adapter it will tend to be non-removeable without a strap wrench after a day's shooting. I now install the suppressor on the adapter until the ratchet quits clicking, then back it off just until the ratchet teeth find the first notch. The suppressor will SEEM loose due a slight jiggle, but the ratchet will prevent any further loosening for at least a couple hundred rounds, which is the max round count I've tested this.

I will add this disclaimer: All this just my opinion based on my experience with the subject. YMMV

mtrmn, it is for a 5R, that will double duty on my AR. i stopped in today to talk to the other guy that works there, and he seemed more knowledgeable that the first guy. the first guy kept saying "well...probably". i don't do probably or maybe. yes or no.
