Buying a lotto ticket for $1 every time the jackpot got too large to ignore was fun, but I never win. I think they changed the price to $2 and said the jackpots will be even bigger. Idk.

I will admit, sometimes when the jackpot gets up around 500 million I will buy a ticket. I know a snowball in hell has a better chance, but you never know.

I no longer buy the multi state tickets, because it's always someone in another state that wins. I just stick to the lotto here in Michigan. Slightly better odds, but still astronomical.

I work with an Amish guy who buys two $20 scratch offs every day, he hit a $1000 winner a couple of Sundays ago, missed work on Monday and had to borrow $10 for our Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday.

He let it slip to a coworker that he's only won about 5 or 6 times for less than $3500 total. He's been doing the 2 tickets a day for months that I am aware of.

He also lost his security clearance because of gambling debts

I bought my first scratch ticket when I was in my 30's. Spent $5 on it. "Won" my $5 back. Walked right back into the store, and bought another $5 ticket...but "won" $10 that time. Still standing there, I bought two more $5 tickets. Didn't win shit on either of those two, so I finally walked out of the store $5 poorer and had the opportunity to say that I played a form of the lottery once in my life.

I've often joked that I've won a dollar every time I've never played.

Agree that it is a tax on many stupid people (not calling every lotto player stupid)...but that it is overwhelmingly played by the same people who didn't manage their finances well in the first place. Really though, I have two older brothers with a gambling and substance addiction issues, and I have had no desire to follow in their footsteps. They served as great examples of behaviors to avoid as I was growing up.

Odds are known upon purchase.
I'd wager everyone reading this has pissed away 5 bucks on less.
Buying lotto and not being able to afford it is another argument.

But that depends on how you view the situation Sir. My quick research showed that the average American spent between $280 - 330 annually (depending on source) on lottery tickets a couple years ago.

That's like...2K LR Magnum rifle primers these days... . What a clown show.

Seriously though, that would be about an Accuracy International ASXR difference in savings over my lifetime so far...

I wonder if the number of players is down. There are certain idiots that play every week and will continue to even if the price goes up. At 5 bucks even if half the people stop buying they still make more money. Id bet that half the people are regulars especially if you discount the couple times a year that there are super big jackpots. Thats the only time I play. If Im getting gas and notice its 500 mil plus I'll walk in and spend two bucks. Then I forget to check the ticket.
