Hi all,

(I saw some old threads on this topic but some of the recommended products now appear to be discontinued.)

I just moved and need a secure storage solution for a home defense carbine. I would like something small, inconspicuous, and secure (I have small kids). I would prefer a standard mechanical push button lock since I don’t trust RFID/electronics in this application. The ability to fit in a corner behind a door would be ideal.

Any recommendations?

Footlocker; steel lined. False back wall in a closet, or bedroom (thinking bigger than one gun). Pocket in large decorative woodwork. Some headboards with depth can be finagled. Suspended ceiling trickery; but be athletic, and not arthritic. An Armoire(?)

Mine is a 9mm PC Carbine concealed in the open, mags nearby, out of sight on the far side of my Armoire from the bedroom doorway, but no small kids in the house; quicker access.

I'm happy with my V Line Long Gun cabinet and in wall cabinet. They have a Simplex lock and are decently built. They are more gun lockers than safes but will keep curious kids out.

Thanks, I have been looking at those. How big a hassle are they to install?

Both weren't too bad to install. The long gun cabinet just required figuring out where the studs were and screwing it to the wall. It helps to have someone hold the safe up while you get the first 2-3 screws in though.

The in wall safe requires you to locate the studs and then cut an opening in the dry wall for the safe. It has a large bezel though, so you can sorta butcher the dry wall cutting and it'll still be hidden.

My only warning with them is don't expect them to be safes, they are just gun lockers made out of sheet metal (Long gun cabinet is 16 gauge only). Any determined attacker with an angle grinder or crow bar could get into the safe in under 5 easily. I only store my home defense guns in them and keep the rest of my collection in a proper safe.

I use the V-Line in wall unit for a carbine. Hides behind a door well. Easy to install with very basic carpentry skills. Simplex mechanical lock, no batteries. Suitable for keeping kids out. Could be opened with a crowbar in a few minutes.

I have a cheap stack-on between the studs model in an out of the way place. It holds an AR with an optic, a 12 gauge, a pistol, and some spare mags with no issue, the shelving it come with is pretty flimsy but holds up a pistol with no issue. It’s key lock so maybe slow but my HD pistol is in a gunvault with push buttons lock right on my bedside table. I bought the in wall safe to have more effective weapons close at hand but still inaccessible and not obvious gun storage to my kids and their curious friends. Everything else is locked up elsewhere. The cabinet seems ok but it came with really cheap screws that broke when tightened so I drilled extra holes and put 8 3” deck screws on each side with a washer under the head. The hinge is noisey and like all of those cheap stack on cabinets, the lock is loud. It does the trick but I would probably get the v line model if I was going to do it over again

I have one of the hornady "safes", yes its RFID but also has number sequence or key to open so you have options, readily available and it works for what it is

Have you looked at https://www3.tacticaltraps.com/products/the-1791-whiskey-barrel-flag-special-edition.html? I've seen the product and it seems pretty solid. Not safe solid, but certainly kid-proof and not bad to look at.
It is also rfid operated, however, there are many options like this with the childproof cabinet magnetic locks out there also.
What do you guys think? Is this secure enough? Is this a dead giveaway when you see it in the house?
