Re: best southpaw AR?
I'm left handed and left eye dominant when it comes to rifles and I've done an awful lot of looking around for good lefty setups, so here goes.
If you want an upper receiver with a left side ejection one thing to consider is parts availability. There are not many companies who make the reversed bolt carrier groups for the left side ejection uppers. Stag is the one veteran in this area that I'm aware of. I did also hear that RRA is getting into lefty receivers.
I would recommend that you either buy a KAC complete lower and the upper of your choice, or order a stripped lower with an ambi bolt release machined in, buy one of at least two drop in left side mag release buttons, and build from there. That way you have a standard AR platform with a few mods done to suit your particular needs. No matter how you go about it you're going to have at least a bit of dependance on proprietary or hard to find parts. KAC, LWRC (so I hear), and ATXS Weapons all offer fully ambi lowers with all controls machined into them. Companies like Seekins Precision, Mega Arms, and a few others offer lowers with right side bolt releases machined into them, and you can buy
this or
this to replace the magazine catch on the left side of the rifle. Install a BAD ASS and your choice of ambi charging handle and you have a rifle you can run any way you wish.
Also, there really isn't an advantage to having the left side ejection port. I've never once had an issue with the regular ejection ports. Perhaps you have and can see the need for a left side port.
There's a summary of what I've found. Just some food for thought.
