Cammenga Lensatic Compass

Re: Cammenga Lensatic Compass

They should work fine, I like the tritium since it is a bit handier for night land navigation. I have used a military compass for almost everything until just recently when mine was re-located/borrowed.
They are tough and heavier then some other compass's. I like them since if someone pisses you off you can swing that thing and knock the snot out of them with it and it keeps on trucking (just make sure you close it first).

I don't know anything about that compass in particular, but if you have not already purchased it yet, here is something you might want to look into before making a purchase.

I have 4 Suunto compasses, including this ^ one, and love them all. Very high quality, very user friendly, and reasonably priced if you look in the right places. All my watches, and diving computers have all been Suunto too. No complaints.

Re: Cammenga Lensatic Compass

It seems much more robust than the stuff i looked at in REI. Im pretty hard on gear. It looks like this one can take some abuse. Does the phospho light up pretty good if you hit it with a few seconds of flash light?

The phosphorescent ones work well enough, but to be honest if you are going to be doing ANY land navigation at night do yourself the favor and get the tritium version. There really is a big difference between the two, and the last thing you want to do at night is break out a white lens flashlight to "charge" your luminous points and ruin your night vision in the process.

Re: Cammenga Lensatic Compass

My "AO" requires approximately 20 declination. I prefer a compass with geared declination so I can "set it and forget it". You might also look for a compass that features a built in clinometer too...

Re: Cammenga Lensatic Compass

Tritium is nice but unless you plan on doing night land nav then it really isn't needed much but could be helpful durring dusk if you are trying to get that last little bit of distance in. I use to pack at night and during the day for fun. Now I do it for work.

Good thing to understand is the conversion from magnetic north to grid north and grid to mag!
