Suppressors Do you clean your suppressor?

So update on my TBAC. I’ve been doing this for a week now, when I started it was 5.6oz over weight. I’m now down to 1.7oz over. If I’d had stuck to the recommendation of cleaning at 2-3oz over I’d have been done already. Lol.
The first couple of days went really slow, soaking over night with CLR for about 12-15 hours and then running many cycles throughout the day in the ultra sonic cleaner. The. About 2 days ago thing started really speeding up and coming out faster for some reason. I think from now on I’ll just clean this thing once a year over winter break and should only take a day or two. Anyways. Probably another day or so and I’ll be good. Will post final pictures then.

I got mine back from TBAC on Thursday. They removed 3.9 oz. and repainted it in two weeks.

AGREE. I just used the Boretech C4 carbon remover on my AR bolt that crud melted off. I can’t wait to see what it does on the Supressor. By the time I actually have to clean mine, Boretech will have their Silencer Cleaning formula out in the next few months so I’ll probably pick up some of that too
I used C4 and it was amazing. It smells good too.

@spife7980 In regards to cleaning your Harvester with Bore Tech C4, did you completely submerge the whole can? Any issues with the exterior finish of the can? I need to clean up my Harvester but have been putting it off because I'm lazy. I clean my TBACs by just dunking them in a jar of CLR and then rinsing with a pressure washer. I'd love to find something as effective for my non-titanium cans.

Doesn’t the CLR take the finish off the TBAC? I would have fully submerged mine in CLR otherwise and probably been a lot quicker.

Hasn't done that to mine. I've submerged both my black 30p-1 and my FDE ultra 7 CB many times. The only time the finish was removed was when I tried the 30p-1 in an ultrasonic cleaner. That messed up my finish pretty quick. I submerge them because I've never found a good plug and they always end up leaking or foaming over the top anyway. The CLR MAY have changed the finish color of my FDE can SLIGHTLY, but honestly I'm not sure if its from the CLR or just the fact that my can has lived a pretty rough life haha.

I think it takes quite a few cleanings to take off the cerakote. I've done four so far in CLR and it's just fine. TBAC told me it will eventually turn the black a little greenish but I've not seen it yet.

I Saran wrapped the end with a rubber band, set it end down in a plastic cup and poured boretech in until full. Didn’t mess up any of the cerakote that was under the Saran Wrap

I found 2 rubber corks at Home Depot that I pound in. A little with a rubber mallet but then it foams up inside and eventually the pressure will loosen the bottom cork and stuff will slowly drain out but it helps break it up. I guess I may just try soaking the whole damn thing then. I can always paint that shit myself but I use a cover anyways so doesn’t really matter.

I decided to try cleaning my Liberty Sovereign in my ultrasonic cleaner this weekend. It was only 0.7 oz over, but I kind if wanted to test and see what works, now it's 0.1 oz over. I used RCBS case cleaner solution and the heat function, probably an hour and a half total of time in the USC.

Might have been a bit much , the nitrided 17-4 mount module and tapered DT adapters came out discolored, and a bit of Cerakote rubbed off of the sleeve in a few places. Doesn't really bother me, as it's more camo'd for hunting now, but I'd probably try a different solvent next time.

So, 64 hours into the soak, I decided to pull it and see what I could get out. I was able to remove the mount with ease now and it was caked! The soak really helped loosen a lot up, but I can say this needs a good 5-6 days to really break it down. I got a lot out with a pick and screw driver. Some big chunks just fell off.

What did all of this get me in reduction? About 1/2 and oz. So, again, this needs almost a week to penetrate deep ( thats what she said ). For now, it’s cleaner. I’m going to wait and see what BoreTech releases with their suppressor cleaner and go from there.

Rinsed at the sink, wiped out and hit it with my air compressor.
Are you going to try an ultrasonic cleaner next? Trying to come up with a plan to get my Omega clean, too. Wondering what I could expect leaving it soaking in C4 for a week...

For my Omega, the C4 did a great job of losening the carbon, but not getting it out. I had to use a pick or brush to get it out. The ultrasonic though, the carbon came out in the solution and deposited itself at the bottom of the jar. As long as you don't mind your suppressor sleeve potentially unscrewing, I would do both.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I should weigh it first... last time I weighed it, it was still under 15oz but don’t remember how long ago...

I guess I need to put together a work bench if I’m going to get an ultrasonic cleaner. Currently do cleaning on the kitchen table with an old towel protecting the table. Need to get my garage organized

I’m waiting to be the test dummy for the new BoreTech suppressor cleaner. If that fails, I’ll go the route Tomcatfan took.
I appreciate the reply. I’ve probably got some time but would like to get ahead on cleaning this carbon if there’s an easy way. Looking forward to your results once they get their cleaner out to the market.

I figure with only removing half an oz last time, plus a few more hundred or so between now and when it comes out, it will be a good test.

Ok, so I think I’m finally done. Here is the before and after pics. Got about 5oz out and think I’m done. According to the manufacturers weight, I still have maybe .5oz but tired of fucking with it and need to start shouting. Took it out the other day and defiantly noticed the sound difference. I think I’ll just start doing this every year over winter break just to maintain it.

side note, really ducked up my stainless steel sink, see last picture. There’s almost like bleach spots or some discolored marks on there. Any idea how to get them out?

Glad you got it done. What a pita!

As to your stainless steel sink, get some Barkeepers Friend. Works wonders on stainless. Also works amazing on copper bottom pots, brass, enameled pans, showers, and coffee pots.

Supposedly the new CGS cans have a coating which prevents buildup, looked pretty cool.

All of our rifle silencers have an internal S Line coating which is a boron nitride coating synthesized via Dynamic Compound Deposition. We had it on our GPMG silencer and after ~18,800rds there was extremely minimal build up, and of what was there it was almost all copper. After it was sectioned and analyzed, the boron nitride layer was still there even after that round count on a belt fed machine gun. It works. Energetic Armament just picked it up as well and is using it on their new Lux silencer.

I know! Seems like I’ve got a few weekends work ahead of me before I should shoot again..
You may be ok with the pistol suppressor. Not sure which .30 cal can you have but look up the manufacturers info and what they’re supposed to weigh against what they weigh now.
My 30P1 that I just cleaned is on my precision bolt gun but my Omega’s I use on my AR’s and they have way more rounds than my 30P1 but are not thy much over weight to where they need cleaned yet.

If you have the same amount of rounds on each, the pistol suppressor will be worse. Most pistol ammo has exposed lead bases. Getting lead out of a suppressor is a bitch.
If one shoots CF pistols, I would think one should strongly consider a take-apart can. I’ve listed a bunch on this thread (although I’m focused on rifles…please let me know if any other take-apart CF cans so I can add them to the list).

I decided to invest in an OSS can for multiple reasons. One of which was because they appear to be easy to clean. Here is a video from their site describing the cleaning process.

If I were to buy a suppressor, my first one would be an OSS for that reason, plus they seem to be more innovative that just stack some k-baffles up

Not sure if you know but in case you don't, never use anything with vinegar in it to clean a suppressor that may have any lead in it. It dissolves the lead and become lead acetate high is a liquid very easily absorbed into the skin.

Rimfire, yeah you should clean periodically.

Pistol cans you could get by without cleaning if your not shooting lead bullets.

Rifle cans don't need cleaned. But, they can get corrosion in them depending on the material used.
