Dream: Shooting out your back porch/window/walk out basement?

I have a relative a couple hours away who's got something to that effect. He's got 50yd out his garage, 705 yards off his deck or bedroom window (though it's not set up for that), and permanent steel and benches from 100-1875 yards within a 5 minute walk from his front door. I go there to develop loads. Only issue is the wind is pretty squirrely at distance in the hills/mountains.
*edit* and the residents are telecommuting over the cell networks from that location. WIFI, HD netflix, zoom etc. Funny thing is that the WIFI/Cell network is more relaible than the local electric CO-OP.

If you want to go for a hike/shoot there are other opportunities in adjacent public land:

In northeast Oklahoma we have fiber with 1gig speeds. Can stream anything we want pretty much. Only 50 acres at my place but I can shoot out to 300 safely. Land prices are going up though. Lots of folks buying up small tracts to grow weed. Damn shame really
Good god what a beautiful view. I could be happy looking up and seeing that out my patio doors. Every time I see something like that I always remember a saying....nobody ever said on their death bed "God, I wish I'd spent more time at the office".
I shoot from home too. Not usually from inside, that's not as much fun as it sounds (especially for anyone else in the house) but the yard is right there and yes, it makes a huge difference in load development. The ability to shoot, ride dirt bikes, light fires, and other outdoor stuff was one of my top priorities in choosing a house to buy, and it wasn't easy to find but it's been one of the best choices I ever made.

I live on the edge of town, literally. I can walk to the end of my driveway, cross the street, climb a fence and be in a pasture. While I have the comfort of Bolt fiber internet service I still don't like being in town.
Fortunately, I can drive 6 miles out of town and shoot at my sis/bro-in-law's place. I'm maxed out at about 725 now, but if I cut some trees I should break 800 easy, maybe 880.
It isn't right out of my back door but I pretty much get to hunt, fish, trap, and shoot when I want... I do my best to help with building fence and working stock to show my appreciation.

The starlink network is in LEO, not GEO, so two orders of magnitude different. This has a major effect on latency, take a look at current user ping times, you'll be surprised!

Same dream and now becoming reality. Recently purchased land that backs to 20k acres BLM/State Land. Built shooting shed (pic below) while cabin is being built . Cabin will have walkout basement facing same direction. Currently have steel out to 1200. Will get steel out to mile plus after snow melts.
I too shot mostly pistol over the years lol. I was training with my ar 10 the other day doing mag change drills. 1 round loaded in ar with empty mag, 1 round loaded in beretta with empty mag. I noticed that it was like ramping in the movies, i would fire, transition and i would speed up, reload, reload, repeat. It was a lot easier before we had new neighbors move in. Prior, all the homes around us were weekend camps. Now folks are permanent, so except for occasionally test firing a handgun round i have to go out to the woods to do some shooting.
We tried to raise a garden for several years. Despite our best efforts, the deer would leave us nothing but the stalks. Both of us got rather tired of this situation so we decided to start harvesting our garden “On The Hoof.” Sitting on a stool out our kitchen window, we harvested winter’s meat several years. Nothing like hesitating between bites of supper to take out a deer, then finish eating before tracking and quartering.
However, with many neighbors close at hand, those days are no more. Fun while it lasted.

Until I read this I believed I had it all figured out. Thankfully we haven’t built our forever home.
I had 50 yards and could open the double doors to shoot groups on hot days. Still have 50 but now I need to step outside and walk 10 yards down a porch.
From the gun room, through the dining room and kitchen, through the slider and onto the deck. Close steel is 655 (great for testing), then steel at 775, 910, and 1,030. Heavy bench with a 100 yard berm for load development, sighting, etc...in the yard.
It looks like an airfield, but it's actually a habitat designed to hold upland birds for walk-up hunting with dogs. Crops weren't up yet. You will see another walk-up area to the right. We suspend long-range shooting when anyone is downrange obviously. We have a 500-yard range in another location for those occasions. 2,200 acres dedicated to the shooting sports. Big Hole Mountains of eastern Idaho.

This is a shot from my main target hill looking back towards the firing position on the far hillside. Right now I've got targets from 200-830 and with a little more tree clearing I should be able to get 1000-1100 yards. We're building a house on the same hill as the firing position, it'll be a 50 foot walk from the house to shoot. Having grown up in the suburbs I'm pretty excited about this.
1,470 off the porch, 17 steel target ruck coarse, 14 target 2 mile 22lr biathlon coarse, multiple 22lr prs type stages around house and a 6 3D target archery range without ever leaving my land.
Since I currently can't live THAT dream yet, if ever, instead I shoot my PCP air rifles out to 120 yards on my property here in Flagstaff AZ. Fortunately I live on 4 acres bordering the FS on 3 sides so at least I live half a dream, lol. Out in the county only 6 miles from our local town mall. $500,000 and it's yours.
A friend that's 22 minutes east has steel 1122Y from his front porch.
Although we've shot out to 1800 yards off his roof.
191Y out back against a big hill where we shoot mostly pistols, 22's, etc.
Off to the side to 420Y.
A shooters paradise.
I bet he'd sell it/20 acres bordering FS on two sides for $400,000. He's a dyed in the wool 70 year old single dude looking to get closer to town and travel a bit with friends and relatives all over the USA.
He uses Verizon internet and gets good reception.
Yes I will be taking a small commision from him and a finders fee from the buyer.

I am in my 30s....
Once I take care of some student loan debt, I plan to move 1 more time...just for the purpose of being able to shoot in my "yard" I'd like at LEAST 100yds...but hopefully I can find something I can reach out further.
I build flintlock rifles and handload for everything aside from 22lr...it's definitely a hassle to load up to test a load or test fire a flintlock. Flintlocks and barrel break in are real hassles when Icneed to lug cleaning gear as well as shooting gear.
Hopefully I can make it happen within the next 5-10 years. Definitely a goal of mine.

I've been very blessed to have the home I have. It has a 150 yard range with steel silhouettes and plates off my deck. This spring a friend and I cut another range about 30 degrees to the left of this range that will have 100, 200, and 300 yard railroad tie backstops. I even have UKD four leg moving targets that are also quite tasty hanging around when I am doing load development. (see photo) If the weather gets bad I can use a tripod out the window of my hot tub room. I'm also planning on building a secure room in my garage for loading that will have windows overlooking the range.

We live in the sticks of Tennessee when we built our house my sons killed more deer from their upstairs bedroom than they did from a deer stand 400 yards then now I can shoot over 600 from the house we love it I'm retired now but it sucked driving 65 miles one way daily when I worked
I included the “gun room” in the house design. Can go out to 500yds from here. Excuse the mess
Had a no wind opportunity this morning. Helps with elv adjustments. I just got finished shooting steel at 700, 800, 900 and 1100yds out my shooting shed window(50 yds from the house). But it is heated and air conditioned. Y’all have some beautiful places!

I’ve shot since I was little, never any formal training though. Precision shooting is something I’ve wanted to get into for a long time but just haven’t. I’m gunna make it a point to hone my skills a little. So I’ll take any advice you’d care to give.
Checked out 9mm loaded rounds off the deck tonight. Closest neighbor is about 1/4 mile...she texted and asked if I hit what I was shooting at...
I have shot rifles since I was very young, stsrted with my Dad's Winchester 74 22 short then his md 70 220 Swift. Rifle shooting was a different world back then. I was 60 when I took my first long range classes, really got into it, and I love it! You can start anytime, get into a good class, you won't be sorry.
I barely have time to shoot, let alone take a class. Just not in the cards right now.
That's why we don't do it till 60, and it helps that the kids are out of the house by then too so there is more money to throw at it!

In that case, best advice I know based on your video is to align your body straight behind the rifle, both side to side and up/down.
The “green army man” pose you show in the video was commonly accepted and taught years ago, but it allows the rifle to move off target at the shot, causing a change in POI and requiring acorrection each time. If you’re straight behind the rifle and do it right (a lot harder to get it just right at first than you’d think) the crosshairs will hardly move and settle right back on target.
This is easier said than done, but can improve your shooting quite a bit.
It also changes the distance between your eye and the scope, so you’ll need to adjust that; collapsing the stock a notch or two is the quick and dirty way.
