FN SPR Build

So , I finally got shipping confirmation today from midwest ! I've decided that since this will be a budget build for initially a hunting rifle I will go with the proof sendero and for the time being the FN PBR Hogue / FN TBM that I already have . LRI is looking good for smith work when the budget allows . I'm thinking a Parkerized reciever stainless / carbon inter-face would be ultra cool , but honestly within the build time frame this could change !
I wish more chassis makers would get into the M70 game !

The .260 brass conversion worked! But i only got 1 group fired befor a construction crew showed up and i had to bug out of my shooting spot.



But, the group showed promise. The grid squares are .1 mil @ 100yds. 5 rnds Shot @ 100yds.

Nice rifle, what red dot/red dot mount do you have on there and how practical do you find it?

Its a burris fastfire 2.

Its not all that practical for everyday use.

I put it on during a law enforcement school that had us (the students) dialing elevation for hostage target shots at 150-200 yds, then having to quickly engage pop-up type targets at 50-100 yards.

When shooting timed drills for a score, I found it way faster than trying to find the target through the scope and holding under by the amount dialed up for elevation. Its also way faster than trying to hit an 80yd target with a pistol.

I got it after getting smoked in scores by they guys using them.

After that school, ive never found the need for it, but it weighs almost nothing, so i keep it on.

since you work on these i have a coup le of questions for you ?
1. HAve you heard of feeding issues with some win70 classis action circa 1996.? The right hand rail has a tiny half moon scallop in it and some time s a round will smack it on feeding and end up wit the bullets nose striking the top of the action...
2. Do you build commercialy or just for personnal satisfaction. Engineer here so always appreciative of good machinong

Im not familiar with the scallop your talking about. A pic would be helpful.

If its something added or milled by someone after manufacture, it could be a problem.

But, theres alot more information needed to diagnose the problem.

The type of receiver. LA, SA, CRF, Push Feed?

The type of magazine/floorplate, if its factory or been modified, type of stock?

I used to run a gunsmithing type business, but got out of it and made silencers for about 5 years. Now i make machine tool parts except for occasional gun work for a few long time customers.

My degree is in Engineering Technology. I focused it as much as possible towards Mechanical Design. All my technical electives, in addition to the core stuff like statics, dynamics, engineering mechanics mech design 1, mech design 2, mech design 3, tool design, power train design and a few classes on cnc turnin, milling and programming.

Ive heard Mechanical Egineering Technology has quite a few differences from a traditional Mechanical Engineering course.

Supposedly more emphasis on hands on technical work and less on Analytics. Im not sure how much though. Didnt have to go any further in math than DiffEQ.

I had a buddy who was a ME for Raytheon that had to take multivariate calc, LinEA and Vector Calc. But he had a MS

You talking about the cuts on either side of the follower. A little less than halfway forward in the ejection ports on the raceway rails?

The cartridge guides for blind floorplates that use the rails as feedlips?

i think lri used to or atlest at one point machined a perfect mold of the m70 action from aluminum and then imbedded that into a stock. Basically a chassis. It looked really slick. I really wish manners would do a mini chassis for the m70 short actuon

Today is un-boxing day ! , Midwest sent me a flawless FN PBR XP marked FNH USA Fredericksburg VA .
I can see no difference between it and my FN SPR , same claw extractor , same blade ejector , same trigger ( only complaint is it was pre-set heavier than I like and it was hot melt glued ) NEAR 20MOA Rail , not a blemish to be found !
I am very HAPPY !!

My last rifle i used the PTG and milled the clearance in the receiver, but will use the FN setup on this next rifle.

Considering just installing pillars for now. As s far as action and barrel work...gap looks very tempting ad they are close and quite a bit cheaper than competitoRs for action and barrel work if done together. anyone have experiwnce with gap for m70 work ? And what are their times like?

FYI... XLR has stopped inletting for the FN SPR action.

It does not show up on their site any longer. I think the Evolution was the only chassis XLR inletting for the SPR action.

These are not common actions, and becoming less so compared to everything else.

IIRC McRee was also inletting a couple of their models for this rifle and may still be doing so.

The FN SPR and the modern (post 94) CRF Model 70 are not similar actions. They are one and the same.

There are a number of minor differences from the original Model 70 Short Action Post 1984 and the current model.

The SPR/PBRs are all the late new haven 300 WSM version with the longer ejection port, wider scope base spacing, and gas deflector on the side of the bolt shroud.

They also all have 8x40 scope base holes.

This is all unimportant really except you need to make sure you order the correct scope base and the ejection port inlets are slightly different.

Pac-Nor advertises pre-fits for cone breech Model 70 and SPR but I have no experience with them.

How smoother or how is the trigger better? Got $250 to pay off an PBR action and plan on (later) putting a CG-Mod 22 2 stage trigger on there. Any concerns with it?

Basically i think they set tje trigger lighter on the spr. The pbr is set heavier and the nuts which control the pull weight have been hot glued. Its super easy to set the trigger pull weight.
I would have 0 concerns with the pbr action. Its exactly the same as the spr minus the trigger weight.
Besides dry firing both will get those rails like glass. Buy it now before they dry up. I thin win m70 production hass now moved to portugal. So these migjt be the last USA made M70 actions out there
