Garmin Xero C1 Pro chronograph

So, forgive me if this has been covered (but I don't want to read 55+ pages of BS right now lol)...

But, I figured the Xero would import weather info (degF/inHg/%) and attach it to the different sessions on its own or via the ShotView App..?

My ~$150 old-school ProChrono DLX with its Digital Link App does this.

I have a feeling Garmin is going to outdo itself soon, with a shitload of integration. The market is wide open, and they can build off this Xero cash cow.

I just found/find it strange.

I'm kind of late to the party buying a Xero, I hate being an early adopter of most things, but it started to seem like everyone had one besides me (especially all the cool kids), so I finally broke down.

I've borrowed a few here and there to try out before, but I used mine for the first time today and it was boringly easy and uneventful (exactly like I'd hoped), but I was completely surprised that it didn't incorporate weather stats to track with one's MV data... I just thought I was being dumb, but I guess it doesn't have it (yet, hopefully).

I just added temp/pressure/humidity to the session notes on the ShotView App with the load info, but entering that shit manually seems sort of tedious when using a ~$600 fancy-pants chrono lol.

A Lilygo T Echo has a MH280 sensor, gps, and radio built in for under $100. Meshtastic node. Integrating with kestrel and xero too would be cool.

They already have the ability to use the weather data from our phones with the ShotView App, but for some reason, they haven't integrated it yet.

It would be best to be able to link to a portable weather station, like a WeatherFLOW or a Kestrel, but the computer we all carry around in our pockets is constantly grabbing local weather data too, so it's a bit puzzling why they haven't harnessed that?

Like it or not, no powder is 100% temperature stable, so it almost doesn't make sense to track MV without also tracking weather conditions. That said, the easiest workaround ever appears to be just to pull the Xero out and grab a velocity in whatever conditions one finds themselves in.

Though, for comparison, this is what a shot summary looks like with the ProChronoDLX/Digital Link, the standalone chrono doesn't do anything special, the Digital Link App just grabs weather data using the phone's data and populates the appropriate cells:

The nice thing about a Kestrel is that it gives you real time environmentals right at your location. Cell phone weather “grabs” might be miles away from where you are. And they aren’t really real time either. With most weather services I’ve seen on my phone, the updates are at best 10 minutes old.

FWIW, I also will put a note on each session in ShotView about environmentals.

IDK, generally, the local weather grabs are just fine for documentation purposes, and today in 2024 the data is more accurate than ever (TBH, many of us could shoot whole matches with just our phones without looking at our Kestrels for anything besides wind).

I hope I am not too cynical, but I wonder if due to the smashing success of the Xero Garmin with fancy rifle guys with deep pockets, they may just be taking their time thinking up ways to charge us for shit like weather stats lol!

While mowing the lawn, I just listened to the Hornady podcast about the Xero with a couple of the developers, Ep #131, as mentioned above.

My impression is they seem too smart to have forgotten about adding weather or some other useful features some of us might bring up... if I were someone like Kestrel I'd be watching my ass, it might already be too late lol.

As an aside, coincidentally, in an unexpected twist of irony, spoiler alert, the narrator dude in the podcast starts it off by dissing the ProChrono, acting like it's some caveman device that's impossible to use (it's not) lol!

I think Kestrel and Shot Marker are both right in their wheel house. It will depend a lot on what they perceive to be the market size of each product IMO.

So the OK button stopped working and it must've broken off because the day it stopped working I noticed a rattling sounds inside the unit.
Anyway I got in touch with Garmin on a Thursday, they emailed the prepaid label, I mailed out the defective unit the same day, they received it on Monday, shipped out the new unit out same day and I had a brand new unit on Wednesday. Can't ask for more.

I think I must have missed the temperature warning last time I used it. If I ever see that message I'll throw it on the AC for a little bit. Last weekend though it just kept saying analyzing shot every 2 seconds, and wasn't registering anything when I actually did shoot. I also was shooting at 7pm at night when it wasn't as hot out.

Would be nice to see a heat shield made for these things.

Mine hasn’t done that but it has missed a few shots fired so far. Not sure if it’s because the Gray Ops cover was on while it was in use, or because there were trees crowding my line of sight within ten feet of where I was shooting.

The cover might help keep it cooler by blocking the sun though.

I generally miss several shots, .22lr, when using it during a match. 100-150 rounds total. I generally break it down to practice/chrono session, then by each stage (10-20 rounds).

The cover may cause heat build up, try it w/o. Not a lot of .22 rounds on this so, 100 or so, nothing missed. No issues with all center fire. If in the sun, maybe shade it? HaHa--now we will see printed shade covers, little mini pop up's! zip tie one of those umbrella's from your drink from Sum Ting Wongs--

I’m still sticking with my LR (annoyingly bought just before the Garmin launched) but every time I have to set the stupid thing up and get is located just right I think about buying a Garmin.

The arca attachment just makes so much damn sense, means it’s always aligned and doesn’t matter if shooting off a tripod, bench or barricade.

I was a hard core LR guy until about 2 months ago when I started dropping shots frequently. I immediately ordered a Garmin when I got home and I can concentrate on shooting again and not adjusting. Far and away so much better in all facets. Get one

I feel you, brother. I owned my LR for 4 years and certainly got it to work well as evidenced by my chrono data spreadsheets I keep.

But it was a PIA and the POS app infuriated me for a number of reasons. It was total crap and absolutely locked up the radar unit and even my phone at times. For me, just deleting a shot from a series would do it. And yes, it picked up other shots and even with a recoil trigger and suppressor. Sometime just running the bolt with authority would trigger the radar and it would pick up an adjacent shooter’s shot.

But, I thought it was the best available, didn’t effect POI, and it was easy to clean up errant data in the csv file. I found it to be workable.

Then I got a Garmin and finally realized just how much of a PIA the LR was in comparison and just how much the company didn’t do shit to improve the product (actually, IMO they did nothing).

Gave the LR to my cousin who is happy to have it. Bet on a year or two he’ll get a Garmin and foist it off to another unsuspecting family member!!! Hahaha.

Garmin just works. No fuss, no muss. There are a few things in the interface that sone of us would like to see improved but I have confidence that Garmin will do continuous product improvement like they do with their other stuff.

Quick question: I initially set up mz Garmin with the desired bullet weight, then disabled the prompt for weight and info screen. When I start another session a few days later the bullet weight is not set anymore, I have to do it via the app. Did I maybe fuck something up?

Bullet weight is not a saved setting. It needs to be set for each session. If you don't set it on the C1, you can set it on the mobile app later to get the calculations you want.

Took mine out this evening and can’t get it to log any shots. First 2 it didn’t record and then it recorded 3. After that it would not record any. Anyone have this issue?

If you’re certain you set it for the correct bullet velocity range and have it roughly in a good position, I’d reach out to Garmin.

Mine is super dependable and very forgiving in where I have it.

Have you been using it before with no problems? If so, and you didn’t change anything then it sounds like it needs to be repaired. They don’t just do that in my experience (three of us running them).

Nope, never missed a shot yet.

Did you set it up right when you opened the session...rifle, MV, placement?

If so, then perhaps yours has a defect and needs a warranty return to Garmin
