Wanting a little guidance here on what i actually need. Getting ready to purchase a new scope for my TRG42. Im looking at nightforce nxs5.5-22 but want to know if there are any other options i should consider. I have a 10x IOR and i like it a lot. How do thier variable power scopes stack up against the nightforce. Also is A US Optics really worth the extra thousand dollars vs the nighforce

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

Ive made a few posts on here with reasonable questions, and gotten no response, guess you have to be in the supper cool sniper club to get a response around here prob dont have enough posts to get a response.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

Hello,

I would go with a schmidt and bender scope. Heres why. And im not meaning to take anything away from other scope makers. S&B are overall built very well with a excellent warranty and the lense quality is the best out there along with Hensoldt. If your saving for a night force then save a little longer and go for the top of the line scope. You can find excellent deals on demo and used S&B scopes. Dont get me wrong NF scopes are built very well but NF overall doesnt top a s&b.

I just bought a used s&b and it should be here by thursday.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

1. when you compare the price of a USO to a FFP Nightforce, there isn't much difference in price.

2. There is a huge price gap between a SFP NF and a S&B.

You gave no real data, so how is one to inteliigently respond to your post.

What is your budget.
What is your intended use of the rifle?
Paper Punching?
Long Range Target shooting?
Tactical Comps?
Hunting?
A combination?

These things need to be answered in order to help you.

The NF NXS 5.5-20 is an exellent choice.

I prefer FFP scopes.
You should consider the following:
SS 5-20x
IOR 3.5-18x
Vortex Razor
NF F1
Premier
S&B
Hensoldt

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

It's just that these questions get asked a lot. Most of us are burned out answering.

I advise you pick the scope with the features you desire most. All the CO's mentioned have a good warranty in the event of a failure.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

I look at it like this; if you buy a NF lightly used, you can essentially try it out for the cost of shipping. Especially in the 5.5-22 you will be able to get your money back out if you decide to sell.

If you start with NF and find it doesn't fit you needs, you can move up to USO or whatever you choose. If you start at the top, you will never know if you really needed to spend the extra thousand. And honestly if you are here asking this question, you probably don't need to.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

Fdkay, makes some very good points, if for one moment you think you are going to compete in a tactical/precision match then I would go with ffp. If you think that you are just going to be banging steel at long range with that 42 then SFP would be fine. The new IOR ffp are excellent value for money and the quality is continually improving. Nightforce scopes are quality optics and you really can't go wrong buying one. I have two NF and a couple of IOR'S, I really do love the IOR glass, although it wouldnt stop me from buying another NF, although the pocketbook did.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

go with the US Optics you wont be disappointed.

or go with IOR they are also great optics.
scott at liberty optics will get you a good on a IOR

there are a few on the buy and sell optics here.
or get ahold of Lazy21 he can fix you up with a great deal on an US optics.

Search is your friend backyard. I had the same questions about two months ago but knew better not to post them without spending a lot of time researching here. I started thinking I would go NF, then switched to a Premier, and ultimately settled on the March tactical scope. Somebody telling you what to buy is useless. Ultimately you have to do the research and hopefully you'll be happy with whatever decision you make.

Good luck!

OP: I agree completely with Hitman. You really need to look at the various optics available in your price range and really start deciding on what features you like the most. When I was looking for a scope for my GAP non-typical hunter, I knew i wanted turrets, a mil dot, top of the line glass, and something that was light (compact). I was initially looking at S&B but in the end went with a Premier light tactical due to weight, compact size, glass quality, etc.

When money starts to not become an issue, you need to realy take time reading about each individual scope, make a pro and con list and then make a decision. I know for my GAP, i looked at several scopes, read up on them, and then made a decision, and I couldn't be happier.

I'm currently contemplating a 338LM build and have the rifle spec'd and am now looking at glass. Its a process and takes time, and in the end there is no perfect choice.

If you must have a suggestion, then I suggest you look at the Premier line as well as the S&B line. Its always better to cry once and get the best compared to crying twice when you deal with lesser quality initially. Best of luck.

Re: Getting ready to make my firs big scope puchase

Thanks for the help. I know people get tired of answering the what should i buy question but it makes you feel better to get a little actual input from people that already own them. I mean it was easier in the army you just shot what they gave you so you didn't have a lot of choices. Based on the fact that a friend of mine has one on their 300wm on his ODA team i went with the nightforce 5.5-22 thats good enough for me. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. Yes i do intend to shoot some matches as soon as my work schedule allows it. nTill then just banging steel for leisure.

Save yourself some money and buy a Leupold ERT M5. They track perfectly, have good glass, and are sturdy as a tank. I shoot one on my winmag out to 1400 yds with great results. There is no need to spend any more money.
