Got My First Tac Ops..

I want to begin by first off saying i cant believe how well built and gorgeous this thing is, I couldn't be more impressed with the build quality and looks of it... just gorgeous. Here enlies the reason behind my post though. i am trying to decide on optics to this rifle and cannot decide between a Schmidt and Bender or the Nightforce. Can i get opinions from anyone that wishes to give me ideas of where to buy what optics to get and what type of reticles would be best... i will be using the rifle for a bit of hunting and a lot of punching paper. I can shoot reasonably out to 800 yards with no issues as far as room. i Would like to thank you all in advance for your help

oh and i meant to add the best places to get deals on the optics as well as possible sources for bulk .308 fgmm, please people i'm new to posting on this site but have looked on it for a long time and in no way have tried to offend anyone or irritate anyone with this post.

well its all what your budget is. the NF is about 60 percent of what a S&B is.

i have a NF F1 with a MLR2 reticle and really like its, its a great scope, robust, very good zero stop. I solid choice.

i also have 2 3-20 schmidts they are also great scopes with amazing glass but come with a much higher price tag the reticle i like is the H2CMR for the Schmidts.

I always tell people if you want nice glass and can afford it, that is the one place where you get what you pay for.

man thanks for the help do you know if at certain times of the year certain dealers have better pricing than others on the s and b or nf or is it pretty much stagnant market pricing ?

my only fear with the s and b is that is it really worth 1400 more is it THAT much better... i have the funding but i know how hard i worked for it and wish to make sure its money well spent type of thing. i have been saving since the build began.

honestly i say get a F1 and reloading gear. the F1 is a great scope for a 308, from a good american company. With the way things are goin and if you really want to get the most out of your gun learn to load your own rounds. get a atlas bipod, a good TAB sling and go to town.

I've got a Hensoldt 4-16 w/std Mildot on my Tango. For occasional paper/target it works fine. But doubling as a hunting rig the std Mildot works great. The glass and eye box are also an asset. For a dual purpose scope, I love this setup.

I do have a S&B with the H2CMR reticle as well - it's a great reticle in my opinion. I do use this mostly on targets though and steel.

I've had Nightforce on and off in the past, good scopes, modest enough in price that they are attainable by most. I've always ended up trading or selling them off though to go with better (clearer) glass.

In short, between the N/F and the S&B, I'd go S&B if you can swing it. For hunting use I'd go P3 Mildot, but since you say you will do more paper I'd go H2CMR, or as a second choice P4F fine.

man no kidding on that reloading gear i want to get into that so bad and have read several books and have a few books from spear and nosler but am afraid of getting myself hurt... any tips on that as well ?

don't worry about getting hurt, you won't lol. honestly get a NF F1, a vortex razor, the bushnell HDMR are all good choices and reasonably priced

then use the rest for ammo and reloading gear, it will pay for itself.

what type of press would you recommend... is it true that the dillon progressives could hinder my accuracy and its better to do single loads or is it just a myth caused by guys who try and set records

It is everything they are stated to be. Words really struggle to describe it. But in the end, it's still a weapon and does what it was designed for very well. Well worth the wait and money!

I'll echo BigJoe's statement on reloading-you won't get hurt. there's no voodoo or black magic involved. Get the single stage as suggested and roll on, you'll be amazed how simple you can make it (or as complicated if you really want).

im going too as soon as i get the optics on it and get some test shots made.... it just wouldnt be right without it... i can say though that its freaking amazing... i think mike should load some tunes in the case so that when you open it begins to play an entrance song.... just a thought... man even my machinist buddy was impressed with the tolerances and thigns he did with it... i had him check it out with me and he said it was done right.... happy customer would be an understatement

Hi jermeatimus,

You lucky bastage! My Delta51 is still at least three months out. *sigh*...

I spent a long time on just the same question you have there; I finally settled on the Redding Big Boss II and am plenty happy with it. IMO it's a definite step up from the RCBS and Hornady presses, but still won't set you back the way a Dillon will. Forster is another reputedly can't-fail maker to look at.

Oh--and I do agree with BigJoe: unless your budget is beefy, I suspect you'll get more mileage out of buying a Nightforce, Vortex or SWFA scope and then putting the difference toward reloading equipment. S&B > NF, sure, but good handloads >>> factory match ammo.

well i thank you kindly for all your assistance i am going to be ordering my optics first thing in the morning and plan on getting the forster press as well... as for the reloading is there any post in this forum about reloading as far as quality manuals and things to keep in mind so and and so fourth... i need a reloading for dummies type thing not an advanced model and if theres not one could we possible start that thread ?

and trust me david... nothing can ever prepare you for the arrival of that rifle.. i know by me writing about it it probably makes the wait worse but i assure you your gonna open that case and be tickled... i know i along with 5 guys in the gun store were... i wiped druell off the gun i think

Oh--and BigJoe is absolutely right: you're <span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> going to hurt yourself. Reloading is much simpler and safer than one intuitively would expect. I too was nervous about it when I first started, but it really is simple and a lot of fun. Just always make sure you know the maximum recommended powder charge for any powder-and-bullet combination you're working with, and approach that maximum gradually while looking for your most accurate load.

Nice choice, my good friend has one sitting on his 5R and I like it. I'm using a swfa 10x right now, and the nightforce is quite a bit clearer. Personally I'm saving up for the Razor HD because I prefer FFP, but that's all personal preference. I went with the Hornady Lock-n-load kit, and it's been doing fine for me. Also, make sure you post pics, you can't leave us hanging like that lol.

Haha I definitely got it when it was ready... It no doubt takes a minute but when it made a .038 three round shot at 110 yards with correction for bullet diameter wait is not a worry

And as draw as my exact time I can't remember I wasn't in a hurry and during this time I think mike got a few large contracts from some agencies as well as I wanted some specific and timely options done to my firearm... I changed my mind on a few things during build.

I'd def look at the Bushy's HDMR very close before I'd order a NF. I've looked through both and only owned the NF, Leupy, SM, USO, and I can honestly say the Bushnell's are turning out some awesome optics these days, just look at the PRS shoots, or the thread on what the pro's use. You will see many more Bushy's used than the NF.
BTW If I owned a Tac Ops, I'd cover the forum with pics,lol

I see that you ordered an NXS 5.5-22X[50]. Nice scope. Nightforce makes some great scopes and I think you'll like the NP-R1 reticle. The NP-R1's reticle line thickness of .062 MOA should work well for shooting the tiny groups Tac Ops rifles can shoot, but it seems a little fine for hunting in thick brush unless the illumination is turned-on (.062 MOA is more fine than the Gen 2 XR in a PMII at 15X, which is .075" at 100 yards.

As you've already ordered your NXS it may be a moot point, but there's no definitive answer to your question of whether a PMII is <span style="font-style: italic">"is it really worth 1400 more is it THAT much better..."</span> than a Nightforce. I own three PMI 5-25X[56]s', and having shot with and/or owned Leupold, USO, Nightforce, Premier, Vortex, and Bushnell scopes I don't see myself replacing my PMIIs' with any of them.

<span style="font-style: italic">"Yes"</span> and <span style="font-style: italic">"no"</span>. The use of a progressive press DOES NOT preclude anyone from loading ammo that will be competitive with ammo that is loaded on a single stage press. The trick is that you can't do all the operations in a <span style="font-style: italic">single revolution.</span> My brother and I are still using a Dillon RL550B that we bought something like 20 years ago, but we've upgraded it with CNC'ed parts and other precision components. We break down operations into stages and batch those operations.

While it probably goes without saying we never use the Dillon powder unit (you can't expect a powder dispenser on a progressive press to meter and dispense charges with match-quality accuracy). When it comes to charge weights I like to <span style="font-style: italic">(well, I don't actually "like to")</span>, double-check every charge individually on a mechanical scale after the charge is dispensed by our <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">"Lock-N-Load® Auto Charge™ Powder Dispenser"</span></span>. Neither my brother and I nor our friends are Benchresters', but I know that it takes work to develop an SMK load that will shoot as well as and with the same velocity as FGMM does in a Tac Ops.

How about a reticle comparison dialed down to 5-6; which most would probably find better suited to closer ranges and thick brush? While the gen2xr has it's attributes; being dialed down isn't one of them.
