hello every one.
I am new to the forum and sorta new to guns. my parents werent really gun lovers so i never went shooting till i bought my first gun on my own. un fortunatly i knew nothing about guns and was thinking that tom clancy's splinter cell was a good reference as to what guns i should get. needless to say ive wasted alot of money on guns like the saiga 12 and ak-47 style guns.
last year i found a remington 1918 ww2 30-06 on CL for 80 bucks. i grabbed it and it was amazing. had hardly any kick for being such a large load. regretably i sold that gun. i made money but it was way more accurate than my pump action 30-06 remington i now have.

so here's the scoop. i have wasted a ton of cash on "cool" guns and am now looking to mature to good guns. i currently have a 38 snubb nose, reming ton 570 (i believe thats what its called) and a single shot break action 12ga.
id like some direction towards what my next two purchases should be,.
i want a great 30-06, and a nice revolver like a 357 mag. i dont want to pay for a name on a gun but i dont mind paying for quality. who is a reputable dealer that i
can trust and what are some recomendations?

also thinking about getting a FN 5.7. any one on here use that gun? how do you like it compared to other hand guns?

If you haven't already, you should check out gunbroker.com. It's like Toys 'R Us for guns, ammo, etc. It will give you an idea of exactly what you want and will assist you in doing research on what you definitely want to stay away from. LoL

Personally, I'm not a revolver guy but I absolutely LOVE the Colt Python .357. It looks good, has a great feel, and the action is smooth as warm butter.

Yes.. the rules are VERY important to follow. I would also like to suggest a Taurus wheel gun. They are not "the greatest" but they are inexpensive, and you can learn a lot about proper handling, from them without spending a lot on a Colt or Ruger even.

As far as the 06 what exactly do you want to do with it? Harvest deer, put holes in paper, or just have fun? there will be much information once you have decided what you want to use it for, since most rifles can be a little "case specific"

trust me, I wasd a beginner not too long ago and there great guys on this site helped me without me even asking a lot of questions

thanks guys. in in albany, vancouver is 1.5 hrs away.

im planning on putting holes in paper. i want to amass a "shit hits the fan" collection. guns are very cool but i dont want a load of guns and have to have several different types of ammo.

if i have my dream list it would be
FN 5.7
ar 5.7

357 revolver
savage 357 lever action
and as for the 30-06 anything that will be very accurate over long distances. probably any 06 would do the trick. it would depend more on the scope i get id assume.

5.7 ammo is expensive, hard to find, and while it's slicker than snot its projectiles weigh next to nothing for doing real damage. Also, never send a pistol round to do a rifle round's job so I wouldn't consider it a worthwhile choice for the AR in the first place.

I have 18+1 rounds from a flush fitting magazine in the M9 on my hip right now, so I'm not impressed by the FN 5.7 capacity either. I can hammer pair with it just fine so recoil is a non-issue too. It's all about training and shot placement, and 9mm ammo is CHEAP and plentiful.

If you can't tell, I'm not a fan of the 5.7 and armored assailants is what rifles and failure to stop drills are for.

I like the revolver and lever action combo. Want the same myself in .44mag but my procurement of precision weapons keep getting in the way.....

For the do-all rifle, I personally prefer short actions for shot to shot consistency of my position, but you may be different. Given your inexperience with the precision side of the sport, I'd suggest you first do a lot of research before buying anything.

I have a Howa 1500 long action that is a great shooting rifle for reasonable money, I'd take a look at that for 30-06. Of course you can't go wrong with the standards either, Rem 700 or win model 70.

Drive up to Donald Oregon and check out Rich's Gun Shop. Good size, nice folks, solid pricing.

I won't get into all the details of why, you can use google for that, but if you really want a SHTF Collection as you call it then I'd start the list over.

I would suppose that a valid question here would be to ask for what purpose is the gun to be used for. This would help others to be more able to direct you into a good gun for the particular purpose. You say punching holes in paper, but that isn't a narrow enough subject. For instance, I punch holes in paper with an air rifle at 50 yards.

I have a smith and wesson 686 357 mag that looks somewhat similar to the python posted. i bought it nib for $600. I love that revolver. nothing wrong with a colt but you will pay more for it. nothing wrong with a dream list, but the stuff you listed is like what red and jason say, hard to find when needed. i would stick to the 223, 308, 9mm calibers starting out.

I'll take it a step further. Common calibers are easier to find in lean times, and replacement parts are easier to find for immensely popular firearms.

Look around your area and see what "fleet guns" are in common use by large groups of public servants, and that should be a good guide as to what would be easiest to both feed and service.

You alluded to deriving a sense of what to get from video games and movies, and that's actually much more common that you might think. It's something to resist, though, because while Stargate troopers may look rather cool with PS90s, they're impractical under the possible conditions that could face us in a post-apocalyptic situation.

My own take is to have a reasonable collection that represents both my interests and a healthy regard for coverage of fairly common calibers. While I do indulge a taste for certain calibers that might not pop up on a regular basis, I've made sure, with the exception of 5.56, to have the ability to use what I might find were supplies to begin to dry up.

Congrats on your interest in firearms & shooting and welcome to the Hide. I guess you've already learned that video games & Hollywood aren't always the best reference for gun stuff! LOL!

If you truly want to build a "SHTF weapon cache", consider <span style="font-weight: bold">3 types of firearms</span>....a pistol, and 2 rifles.

<span style="font-weight: bold">First</span>, I would buy a <span style="font-weight: bold">revolver in probably either .38 or .357</span>, these are very common rounds with great man stopping ability. With a .357 you can always shoot .38+P rounds out of it....so one gun (.357) can shoot two types of ammo... nice to have when ammo gets scarce... With a revolver you get almost total bullet proof reliability. No magazines to worry about, no oil & maintenance to worry about, just pull the trigger.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Second,</span> I'd get a nice little <span style="font-weight: bold">.22lr rifle</span>...great for shooting small critters for food & heck even medium sized animals with the right shot placement. You can buy a 500 rd box for $15 & stock up literally 1000's of rounds for cheap. Once again the .22lr is a VERY common round found in any store. That's a lot of ammo for animal killing for food....

<span style="font-weight: bold">Third</span>, I'd buy an <span style="font-weight: bold">assault rifle </span>that can give me more help on shooting bigger game than the .22 would, but also gives me a high capacity magazine to protect my family from roaming gangs of bad men. So I would go with the bullet proof <span style="font-weight: bold">AK type weapon. The 7.62x39 </span>round is big enough to drop game with & the weapon is more than capable of protecting you with the magazine capacity. Ammo is easily obtained in large bulk quantity & the weapon idiot proof & will perform in any condition....

Just my 2 cents on a SHTF weapon selection......LOL!

i have already owned an ak and N ak style shotgun. i wasnt impressed with either of them. o agree with not usin a five seven for a rofle rou.d but i still want it as a pistol. i have only heard good things. it would be a easy gun for my wife a.d kids to shoot as well. also theres always going to be that gun you just want. i have Ll the stuff for loading 30-06 rounds and i have 3000 rounds unloaded. i am waiting for my friend whoreloads his ammo all the time, to show me exactly how to do it.


i must say i am really impressed with alk the pesponses. it seems like the major goal of the forum is too mKe sure people enjoy shooting in a safe responsible manor.

Welcome from a fellow Albany resident. I would recommend filling out your profile and following the above advice regarding reading all the rules. If you haven't done so yet I would recommend get a membership to a local range where you can practice,practice,and practice some more. Albany Rifle and Pistol Club is close and offers the basic necessities. Plus you will find that most folks at the local range here are very helpful and informative. Just remember you will always need take their advice with a grain of salt and learn to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of advice. Best of luck to you. You will find the hide to be a very good source of information and the occasional laugh.
