Hey guys,

A few months ago I picked up a Gen 2 RPR from Bud's for a whopping $750 shipped, but it's in 6 Creedmoor, which I've never worked with. I know the preferred powders for this are on the slow side, but I have a large amount of WC844, WC846 and Ramshot Tac on hand, and would like to use some of those if at all possible.

My range only goes to 600 yd, and I'm not planning to compete anytime soon. I'm just trying to get better at shooting and reloading. I want to use the components I've got if I can, and am looking for a load that won't beat up my barrel and brass too bad, since I prefer longevity over performance at this point in my journey. Does anyone have any experience with these faster powders in their 6mm Creedmoor? I've seen load data for Varget, which I think is somewhat comparable, but not for these other powders. I know some will cringe, but I've had excellent luck consistently metering Ramshot Tac...

As a sidenote, I have a bunch of WC872 as well, but I tried it and found my velocity was below 2400 FPS. I've safely duplexed WC872 in other chamberings, and I'm considering trying it out with the 6 Creedmoor as well.

Lastly, I put a LuthAR stock on my RPR. Does anyone know what the original Ruger stocks sell for? I'm thinking I'll list it on here before trying Gunbroker.

Thanks!

Steve

My opinion for what it’s worth would be to take some of the money you saved by buying at a good price and go get 8 pounds of h4350, rl16, 4831sc, or rl23 and burn the barrel out on it. I’ve shot several thousands of 6 creed in the last couple years so I have a fair idea. You’ll find great velocity and accuracy with any of those with a variety of bullets.

That may be the way to go. I’d just like to give it a try and see if I can get results that are at least good enough for practice. I’d rather put those $200 (after hazmat and shipping) into the pot for a better scope if I can get away with just using the powders I’ve got. My optics are probably my most significant limiting factor at the moment.

I’m a broke engineering grad student, thus the cost sensitivity. I couldn’t have responsibly bought an RPR if it weren’t for the huge discount.

I can understand the want to save funds, just keep in mind if those powders don’t work out, you are wasting barrel life and your time chasing your tail.

H4350 is the go to. Not just for accuracy with just about any bullet in 6mm/6.5mm, but for temp stability as well.

I would research what the velocity change is (temp swings) with that powder and compare.

Just get a common powder for the cartridge powder(H4350 or H4831)and work on a low node maybe.
It’s gonna probably be awesome at 600 yards and last a bit longer.

In the future maybe a 6 BR or BRX or something similar (308 even?)barrel That likes your faster powders.

WC872 is notoriously sensitive to temp changes, at least when it's not duplexed. I'm not sure about WC844 or WC846, but Ramshot Tac isn't bad in my limited experience.

I do have a large shank Savage barrel in 6 BR kicking around as well as dies and Lapua brass. I wonder how much it would cost to have someone reprofile it for my RPR... I quickly ran a couple dummy cartridges through the P-mag into the 6 Creed chamber and they seemed to feed just fine.

If having the barrel reprofiled weren't too expensive, do you guys think I might be better served using a 6 BR as a trainer and saving the original 6 Creed barrel for when I'm ready to compete? I'm not sure what kind of barrel life to expect at lower nodes, but I'm sure it's been discussed.

Also, how do I use the multi-quote function? I see how to add quotes, but I don't know how to actually make them come up in my text box.

Theirs a reason why most are using RL16 and H4350 in the 6 creed.
It will give you the best performance with that round.
Just keep the others powders for another build, lasts for years.
Many have tried other powders to find that magic one and most come back
to those two. They just plan work in that case and bullet weights. (103-110)
Unless your running a really light bullet and slow twist barrel.

I find it easier just to insert with the reply button one at a time.

I have that same rifle. The load I've had the best luck with, .223 inch group, is 41.3 grains of RL-16. Also 41.3 grains of H4350. RL-16 gives higher velocities. I chrono'd the H4350 at an average of 3017 with an ES of 14 and SD of 5. I loaded BTO at 2.181" No idea how I arrived at that number...could be a COAL of 2.750 or there abouts. Bullets were 107 Sierra matchkings.

I also just picked up the Savage 110 Tactical in 6mm CM. Hope that shoots as well.

Good luck!

I've had great luck with RL16. 40.8gr with the 107's at 2.735" always had single digit SD.
I would imagine that the take-off stock would be hard to sell - as people have replaced it with aftermarket stocks and not the other way around.

I see BL-C(2) immediately before RL-16 on at least one burn rate chart. I’ve got a whole lot of WC846, which is reportedly the same. Does anyone have experience with the BL-C(2) in the 6 Creed, or maybe have a starting load I could use? This might require a QL query.

Thanks!
