Looking at doing some loads for the 600, barrel is 1n8 Armalite. Any experience on eith er the SMK or AMAX in the 80 grain single load?
Request actual data verses "SMK" and +1

I appreciate it.

Re: HIGH POWER LOAD FOR .223 @600 SMK OR AMAX

I shoot 80gr Amax and 80gr Noslers. 24.5gr Varget shoots good for both bullets.

I'm currently shooting a douglas barrel, it likes to jump the Amax about .020 and the Noslers about .010.

Both are very accurate loads but the Amax will flat out-shoot the Noslers or the SMK's.

CLE, 20" Krieger 1:7.7

24gr Varget and 80amax on lands. 24.5 is possible, but primers are FLAT.

This load goes into the 10 ring if you aim it there....which I often don't.

I definitely need less wind than folks with 77smk and 75amax.

This sounds good, I think I will try the AMAX when I start up on this again. I did have a RRA years ago and used Hornady 75 BTHP's. Forget the charge weight with Varget, but they were warm, so warm I would get doubles on the light trigger. I need to find a dang rifle first!
Wanted an off the shelf one, Armalite? The RRA I got from Legal Transfers required 7 minutes of windage to zero, front sight was canted badly and I don't want to give them another try.
FFL checked with Jerry's and they are out.

Mark,

Check out the reloading depot located in the upper section of this forum...there are a plethora of loads for 556s covering the bullets you listed and almost all common powders.

I had a post about this recently and compared the 68-69's to the 77's. The balistics were pretty suprising.

For 600 yards I would think the 68-69's would be the way to go/ Plus they are mag fed

Re: HIGH POWER LOAD FOR .223 @600 SMK OR AMAX

I am currently starting development for a 24" 1:8" heavy barrel AR (Stag model 6). My initial loads will be 69SMK/24.5gr Varget, and HDY 75gr HPBT Match/24.0gr Varget. Whatever it takes to shoot under 1MOA for 40 scoring rounds at 250yd in calm conditions will suit my needs. That is also a fairly tall order, but I've noticed that some of my competitors have begun to manage it, so I'm obliged to meet that challenge.

I am fairly certain that any load which meets this standard at 250yd will still be competitive out of my barrel at distances like the 600yd you mention.

I will be comparing these handloads against the Prvi 69 and 75gr factory Match loads that my rifle already shows some liking for. The Prvi is pretty good stuff, and the cost is low enough at a little over $.55-.60 a round that the time its saves makes it suitible for practice ammo. The Prvi match ammo's brass has proven to be excellent for reloading.

CLE upper (w/Frank's chamber) Krieger 1/7.7 24 Varget 80 SMK 0.035 jump. Wolf primer, Nosler custom brass (11 firings). Will shoot ~1 MOA prone/sling over 20 shots (shot a 200 with 19X this morning at 300 yards).

75 vld, jumped .035, 24.2 H4895. Any case or primer will do. This is Basically what AMU is shooting at 600. Also try jumping those 80's a little bit more and see what happens...

either the Sierra or the hornady. You might be suprised what your barrel/chamber likes. .018 is an answer, but it isn't the only one.
