I wanted a shorter, lighter mag for my Specialized Dynamics .260 Remington for an upcoming wolf hunt, range use or shooting from prone position. Since no one makes a short polymer mag for the DPMS LR .308, I decided to make one.

I started with a standard Magpul P-Mag LR 20 for the DPMS and cut two inches off the bottom with a stardard cut-off wheel. Then I cut two coils off the spring. All I had left to do was drill some 1/8th" holes and rivet the base plate back on. I finished by painting the rivets flat black to match. The whole project took about 30 minutes.

Voila! Now it's a full two inches shorter and still holds 12 rounds. It's the perfect size for long hikes and benchrest work. Magpul should offer these. Hint, hint!

Always a day late and a dollar short. Oh well. Mine was $12 cheaper and is one inch shorter than the MidwestPX.

They also have a version that just barely sticks out of the magwell lol...

Yes they do, here's the 7 rounder:

I like the homemade job, I thought about trying that and was too chicken. Looks good!

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

I thought we were going to see someone with a fresh new home made mold to push out bran new home made mag bodies.
Been doing this for years with the 556 Pmags to hold WSSM ammo. Short stubby versions for hunting big game hold 5 and are nice and low pro. Full size 30rd Pmags can hold 11 and are great for coyotes.

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

wow, that is awesome... i might need to look into this for deer hunting.

The 15 rounders from midwestpx are one inch shorter than the LR20.

But Predator Strike4ce method is about $12-15 cheaper lol... I was debating hacking one and you just gave me the coup de grace

Great job bro, here is a pic of my homemade P-Mag. Took me about 15mins with a leather man tool, holds 12rnds. </div></div>

Really? Do you realize that your chinstrap is unbuckled? Square yourself away soldier!

Thank you for your service.

Such a juxtaposition in realities. This poster doing the real hard work and completing the missions as compared to the people in the little square known as DC. WTF?

I think I have a man crush for RoBird.

My gosh, realizing I may be ghey at 44 yoa - what do I tell my wife and kids? All those rest area adventures I could have had when I was younger - time now lost. God life is cruel.

Hey nice magazine by the way.

"ROBERT A. HEINLEIN, Thanks for your service. Great photo!"

Heinlein was in the blue water Navy/Naval Engineer. I dont think he and RoBirds service experience cross decks much.

You're welcome, my service is a pleasure and privilege.

Funny thing is I actually started my service with the Marines, I got my share of interaction with blue water Navy folks. Crazy bunch if you ask me, locking themselves up on ships for months at a time.

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

I know this is off topic but wanted to tell RoBird how grateful I am for his service and sacrifice . I take nothing for granted and appreciate what guys like you are doing. Godspeed my friend.

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

I Have done this by cutting 2 full sections out of the lower portion of the mag and reattaching the bottom section including the base plate rail.I have used JB Weld for plastic and I have had very good durability with this method. The base plate is still removable for cleaning, no rivets required. You do need to watch alignment when re-attaching the bottom due to the taper of the case.

in a pinch a hot nail will work, so im sure set screws will work, id use a locking compound no matter the case

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

Write up I did on another forum for converting 20 round p-mags into 10 rounders fo California compliance:

After some searching, I wasn't able to find much info online for converting the 20 round 308 Pmag to a 10 rounder by shortening the body of the mag. I dissasembled some of the blocked 10/20's I had and experimented until I found the right length for holding 10 rounds. Unfortunately the ribs on the 308 mag do not line up with where it has to be cut, like the 5.56 20 round mag does. Because of this, the base plate will have to be pinned or screwed in place to hold the magazine together. Not a big deal, it's easier than it looks.

Tools/Materials you will need:

-Drill, either hand held or a drill press (I used a DeWalt cordless electric)
-Drill bit. The diameter of the drill bit should match the diameter of the material used to pin the mag base plate to the body. I used 1/16" stainless weld wire, so I went with a 1/16" drill bit.
-Hand held clamp (Not required, but it makes the job easier)
-Ruler
-Fine tip permanent marker
-Hacksaw
-Wire cutter/Pliers
-Large file or coarse sandpaper
-Wire or screws to pin the base plate

Procedure:

1) Disassemble mag into base components. If pinned already, the pin will need to be either pulled out or driven entirely into the mag to facilitate removal of the base plate from the body:
7452712180_2c9a3f89bf_c.jpg

2) The body will need to be cut 1/8" above the top of the middle rib. Mark the cut off line with a fine tip permanent marker as shown:
7452710580_0e51007066_c.jpg

3) Carefully cut along the line with the hacksaw. I cut slightly below the line to leave a bit of extra material. You can always remove extra material, but adding material if you cut too much is not really an option.... After cutting, even up the edges using either a file or coarse sandpaper backed by a flat surface:
7452708902_6d9187b091_c.jpg

4) Using clamps or tape to hold the base plate in place on the magazine body (spring and follwer NOT inserted), drill holes for attachment of plate. The front set of holes should be in line vertically with the rib the runs down the forward edge of the magazine and about 1/8" below the upper edge of the base plate. The rear set of holes will be at the rear most edge of the base plate, again about 1/8" below the upper edge and 1/8" from the rear edge. After drilling, test fit pin material to ensure it passes through the base plate and magazine body:
7452707442_c9f7aa7805_c.jpg

5) Trim magazine spring as shown:
7452705954_ba9e039251_c.jpg

6) Bend lower portion of mag spring to match the section of spring that was cut off:
7452704050_2925270ed2_c.jpg

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

Continued:

7) Re-install mag spring base onto the mag spring. Install follower, spring/base into magazine body. Install magazine base plate and insert pins or screws to hold in place. If using pins, leave them long to make it easier to pass them through both sides of the mag and base plate:
7452702410_fd1859d07e_c.jpg

8) Test fit 10 rounds into magazine to check capacity and integrity of the pins or screws (Better to blow apart now than later at the range). Ensure the magazine will NOT take an 11th round. (If 11 rounds do somehow fit into the mag, disassemble and remove more material from the magazine body. The holes will need to be re-drilled in the mag body if further trimming is done):
7452699338_f7f3394152_c.jpg

9) If everything seems good at this point, cut the pins to length and file off the rough edges. At this point I superglue the pins in place as well as filling up the small gap between the magazine body and base plate. The pins alone should be able to hold, but I like the peace of mind from having the whole thing glued together:
7452697818_a89fb6a456_c.jpg

10) Go do some shooting from a bipod without balancing on the base of the magazine!

Re: Homemade P-Mag! (pics)

you could try cutting down a mag with a 10 round follower. Or, you could buy a 4 round steel mag from dpms. It is a 10 round mag that is limited to 4.

Yip, just like this.

I got the idea after seeing them at MidwestPX, and Predator Strikeforce did a nice job adding his own touches after seeing my post on Predatormasters. There's a lot of handy guys in the gun world!

Anybody know where to find a similar write up that shows how to convert 30 rd pmags to 15?
