My complaint about Columbus Day is that the Vikings and others had been visiting for almost a millennia by the time he showed up and he was so obsessed with gold and spices he never realized the actual utility of what he... not found. Charted? Opened?

I don't even like to be far enough offshore that I can't see land.

Well, it's a Euro-centric POV, for sure. History-writers tend to be subject to a sympathetic gravitational pull towards their own, especially if to do otherwise is to attract negative attention or a loss of favor with the PTB.
