Looking at old b&w photos of the mass arrests in Europe during the 20th century... Always strikes me just how densely packed together the detainees and guards are in small areas. One dedicated knifer can quickly catch a lot of jackbooted bodies in that environment, and by the time the other guards realize what is happening, a good 5 to 10 of their comrades would have been dead already.

Too many were not the kind who are willing to fight and die taking as many with them as possible. Plenty acted like sheep, both with the National Socialist roundups as well as the Communist round ups. Lots are a bit too scared of death, to be able to embrace the certainty of it so they could do something of note.
