I'm looking for some advice from some of the more experienced here than me. It don't much. Haha.
Ive been developing a load for my REM. 5r .308 for longrange.
So far my best load is with
Win. Brass
178 gr. A max
Wlr primer
44.3 gr. Varget
2.820 oal
2610 fps. In mid 50's
26 fps. Es

The gun loves this load and shoots ragged 5 hole groups at 100 yds. And .5 to .75 moa at 300 but at 600 the high es starts showing and the group has more vertical than hor. Difference. It still consistently shoots .75 avg. moa as long as I do my part. Maybe I'm asking to much but should I hunt a load with a lower deviation or just shoot my load. Also I've read a few claims that the cci br2 primer are milder but more consistent for long range. I shot a few loads with them but none had the accuracy of the load above or Should i maybe start over with that primer and try to find a load for them? I kinda stuck with Varget also because I live in the southeast where its drastic weather changes through the year.

Thanks

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

If your Rem is shooting .5 to .75 inch at 300 yards, you should immediatly send it to the Smithsonian as it is one in a million. I would sleep with that gun and never let it out of my sight. Would you please post a few of your half inch 300 yard groups.

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

BB if it was shooting .5 -.75" groups at 300yds I would not be here asking about loads but beating records, haha.

No problem though and yes I was saying MOA groups not inch's.

BCP, Yeah its hand trickled charges and most of the time weighed brass. Would the weighed brass cause a higher ES, b/c I may not have had it weighed out when I chrono'd the load. I'm guessing now that you said that it would since the pressures are constantly changing?

Thanks

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

How many strings have you chrono'd? One or two strings of 5 will not tell you anything. Sorting the brass by weight can make a big difference. An ES of 26 is still less vertical than your posted .5 to .75 MOA at 600. Doesn't seem that bad,. but it could be better. I would just shoot it and try to get the ES down. Neck tension is another big factor you might want to look at.

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

I started using a lee collet neck die not long ago seems my groups opened up a little and it doesn't have the neck tension the full length die did. I'm guessing because the pressure has changed. I loaded up 10 of each only neck tension and ten full length sized only to experiment and get data to see.

Thanks and all info is greatly appreciated

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

As I rub my crystal ball I make a prediction.

Even if the spread can be dropped to single digits the rifle will still shoot .5-.75MOA- 'if the shooter does his part'.

But good luck

Well if you don't weigh it you might get a higher ES. Like I said I'd be happy as hell with those groups.

Re: imore consistant 308 load?

I'm def Happy happy with the rifle, no doubt its more accurate than me. Was just curious about the spread if I needed to put more focus into it. Guess I just need to shoot it and enjoy.

Thanks for the advice
