A few things:
1) Inflation is caused primarily by monetary policy, not fiscal policy.
2) The point above notwithstanding, Republicans have run up deficits every bit as large as the other guys. We couldn't vote our way into sound fiscal policy if we wanted.
3) This horse left the barn about 20 years ago. $25 trillion in deficit spending occurred since the Trade Center towers fell; it would require an impossible large budget surplus to soak up that much debt in the lifetime of anyone who is old enough to read this post.
Fed reform is the only thing that would address the flow of funny money, and that needed to be done before Ron Paul pushed it during Obama's first term. It doesn't get fixed by electing a handful of congressmen promise to vote for small spending cuts and bigger tax cuts; that doesn't fill the hole which has already been dug.
The news yesterday was that the Fed will probably do an emergency rate hike and that it will probably be a half-percent instead of the usual quarter-percent, and so yeah it would appear that the narrative has shifted.
The middle class will soon realize the corner they've been painted into; either they get monkey-hammered by inflation in the short term or they watch their wealth evaporate in the blink of an eye when the market tanks and their homes become worth far less because the next owner won't be taking out a mortgage at 3.25%. Maybe the Fed belly-flops and both of these happen. And their favorite politicians are powerless to fix the problem; there is no voting our way out of a monetary crisis.
This has been building like it did before 08. The big difference is the debt is now 30 trillion not 7. The people that have been buying homes at inflated prices and the ARM are in a world of shit again.

As I donne my tin foil hat I think that just saying these people are stupid is too easy. But from the perspective of this conversation on inflation, tax cuts are only beneficial if accompanied by spending cuts that are at least as large. Otherwise, they simply contribute to inflationary pressure because the government is putting more money into the economy than it is removing.
I know it's a lot of fun to paste "I did that!" Joe Biden stickers on gas pumps, but the fact of the matter is that the problem has been brewing over the current and previous three administrations, and up until the past several months all was good because there were different mixes of monetary and fiscal policy that created the appearance of organic economic growth. Not sure if that process is coming to an end, but it does feel like we're approaching that point.

This is true, I don't eat at McDonald's but once a year maybe, two sausage biscuits, a hash brown, and coffee cost me seventeen dollars recently...insane! I remember the days of a one dollar hamburger. And way way back in the seventies two dollars bought you an entire meal.
I can cut back on places to eat, I can get by on grocery store only, but what happens if there are mass shortages in commodities. Meat is up 40%, even produce is up 10%, dairy and eggs are up 15-20%. There is a point at which only those who are self sufficient, like farmers, will be able to cross that Rubicon.

You can’t totally trust the food stamp increase as some of it is a vote buying effort. Publicly traded companies like food chains will give you a closer idea to the true inflation number in their COGS. Regardless of whether or not they make a profit the cost of goods sold will tell on the general state of prices in the economy that affect homes on the daily - because they have pretty much the same expenditures - food, fuel, elec, gas, etc.
The actual Inflation Rate is currently above 15% and possibly above 20%. There is no need to go through all the calculations the government does as a general number is good enough, especially now. It qualifies as “high” and nowhere near the stated goal in the single digits.

Made my monthly trip to Missoula, Montana to stock up on routine supplies. Went to Costco, Walmart, Lowes and Harbor Freight. I did not put a sharp pencil to each of the item's purchased because historically about the same amount is spent on a stock up run. This trip cost about 20% more than previous trips. No luxury item's purchased.

In fact, the most likely outcome is that we get inflation occurring simultaneously with a recession, and that should be fun. The good news is that the 2008 crash demonstrated that price deflation can occur extremely rapidly, and so hopefully this condition doesn't persist for very long.

As I sit here debt-free in my mid-40s, one thought continues to occur - man, did I ever fuck up with that financial decision.
I have witnessed this phenomenon during 3 past recessions. I don't know if it denial or just wishful thinking. This phrase comes to mind "Things just can't get any worse"... Inevitably they do get worse.

It may take a hell of a fight but in the end those of us who work and pay for our lifestyle will still be the ones in control and recognize the way life goes.
