I have been shooting suppressed, on every rifle and pistol for 6 years. I recently switched over my mounting to the Area 419 hell fire universals. While purchasing, I said why not and ordered their brake. Fired 5 shots with it, took it off and put it back in the range bag.
If your state allows, buy a suppressor. It is definitely worth it, even while wearing ear protection.

Well, I have gone from having 0 suppressors to having two on order in the space of three days. Now I need to have an opinion on suppressing a gas gun as a left-handed shooter. (I'm sure it sucks)
A piston rifle would be about the only way I’d want to shoot a gas gun left handed. Otherwise a tuned gas block can make a big difference. But you will have gas in your face regardless.
Yeah, I was thinking either a piston or build a left-hand upper but that seems like such a pain in the tail the piston may be the better bet.
Well, which 2 cans did you buy, and then we can give you better insight as to what we recommend. For the AR platform, it's hard to beat the Sandman-S as a do-all can. It's one of the least gassy (according to PEW Science), and one of the best sounding cans (deep tone), and it's rated for full-auto no barrel length restrictions, all the way up to .300 WinMag.
I have 2 of them in my lineup. Great cans.
As for the piston vs. DGI... That's the same for R or L handed shooters... Piston is the way to go. My old LWRC M6A1 is almost like shooting a bolt-action without all that gas in the face, and without all that port-pop right by your ear. It still has it, it's just up by the gas block where the piston vents, so you don't ever hear it.
I went with a TBAC Dominus-SR and a TBAC 338 Ultra G2 SR. The latter will live on my bolt gun. The former was available at a local retailer and would allow me to use the SR mounts for everything.
So if you're looking for a dedicated AR can, I'd go with the Sandman-S, and use the Dead Air KeyMount Brakes on them. That's the setup I run on all mine. Highly recommend it. It's the best mix of length, weight, and sound-suppression.

You are probably right, the other wrinkle is the gas guns I own don't have adjustable gas blocks (LMT/KAC) and while I could change out the blocks that seems like heresy, or at least a pain in the tail and a good way to harm resale value.
Even right handed, even pistons with tuned gas systems (my SIG 556/551) you will sometimes get gas face. It is pungent stuff but more irritating than choking, so you blink a bit but then go on. Even just changing your shooting glasses to something more wraparound can help.
For Stoner action* guns, even overgassed ones, most shooting when standing, with normal outdoor airflow, is just fine. Yes, I have shot left handed some even, and it's not much worse. Gas under pressure comes back so do the silicone trick on the charging handle (I have been much less impressed with gasbuster handles) but out the ejector port seems to be vented after the pressure has been used, so you get gassed just /after/ the shooting, and especially if prone on the ground.
All is replaceable or wrenchable so try it and see how much it annoys you.

Love my can, but I want a brake to run too. When I’m the only guy who shows up with a can whats the point? Sucked when I didn’t have a can and everyone’s else’s did.
Options are nice, and if you’re blasting me in the face with muzzle blast I want to return the favor. The shorter length would be nice sometimes too.

My opinion is not a popular one. I think suppressors are worthless unless you run them with subs.
All cans I’ve used have a decent shift.
They make a decent maneuverable rifle into something long.

With NV they do help a lot. But I’ve seen a lot that do worse on flash the many prong hiders.

My poi moves about 2”, the rifle is only shot suppressed and took I think 7 patches to have one come out clean and I rarely clean my barrel.
The biggest benefit is it’s just a more pleas t shooting experience. I’d rather deal with a shift that can be accounted for than be the only guy out of 7 on a line shooting unsuppressed. It’s downright miserable being close to guns these days with the brakes we all use
When I go to public ranges I like to set up on the middle bench and shoot suppressed with my AI.
While everyone else runs their brakes. They get this warm comfy feeling shooting next to me. It’s great!!!!
Then while they’re finger fucking each other’s guns back by their trucks I take out my AR50A1 and let a 750 grain Amax clear their benches

Just had to chime in and say that I used to run the Fat Bastard on my 6.5-06 AI, but once I shot it suppressed, the brake came off. The suppressor makes a much better brake, and you don't get all the blast that the brake caused. It really makes for a much more pleasant day of shooting. I also still wear ear pro when shooting that gun, but man are they fun when you're shooting subsonic stuff!
It’s ridiculous how quiet my 308 is with 180gr subs. Shooting steel is way more fun whenever it’s “pssh, CLANG!”
I'll go against the grain here. I think for a range, what's the point. I just outdoors ( not range) except pistol, and its the ONLY way to go. But I wouldn't fck with a can at a range, that's just me. But outdoors solo, 100000% can.
Also a can will change your recoil impulse and you may like your brake better, flatter and smoother with a can.

Always a good idea to wear ear pro even when running a can. Best thing to do is invest in some good ear pro so you are more inclinded to wear them. Hearing is one thing you cant get back when its gone. I have high pitch hearing loss in my right ear and has got me very careful. I wear Peltor Comtac V now which are great for situational awareness and conversations on the range. I run cans on all of my guns but as others have stated not everyone has cans on their guns at the range and you need to protect your hearing whenever you can.

Unless running subsonics, shooting with suppressors can lead to hearing loss without additional protection.
If I am shooting suppressed, I will wear my MSA Sordin's. If shooting unsuppressed, I will also wear plugs under those muffs.
I find that shooting suppressed at a range is still worth it, however the benefits dwindle the closer you are to other shooters. But I much prefer my suppressed rifle over a braked one, even if I am next to other braked shooters (which sucks, especially when shooting in an area that's partially to fully enclosed).

I have two cans a Dead air SandmanL 30 cal. and a 338 thunder beast ultra and use them on all my rifles...but I dont go to ranges I shoot on ranches in south Florida.

i don't have a reason to hang half a pound off the end of my rifle.
used a DPt and a hardy pretty heavily in New zealand for the novelty factor when i was living over there. the last trip i didn't even bother. although the DPT overbarrel on the tikka was pretty fun.
get some length to ur rifle, use a faster burning powder on an underbore cartridge and keep ur 200$. my .02.

I had a "lil" bastard... and it was punishing- great recoil reduction but I swear it sends it straight back to the shooter
only owned 2 other brakes and they weren't nearly as bad; other brakes I've shot didn't seem as bad as mine was
screw off your FB and see how much of a difference it makes bare muzzle for you in comparison
then realize that difference x4 or more with a quality suppressor

I’m going to go slightly against the grain. Suppressors make a short gun into a long gun, and a long gun into a pike. And, the throw off the balance if not accounted for during the build. Your adding roughly a pound to the very end of your gun. I have a few suppressors and shoot suppressed most of the time. I don’t use a suppressor for games like PRS, where longer is less wieldy moving amongst contrived props.
I totally envisioned a bayonet attached under the suppressor when reading this.
I shoot both. Prs matches I mostly shoot with a brake. Practice suppressed. I personally shoot better suppressed. The concussion is hard for me to focus knowing it’s coming. I know I know, I’m a puss.

I had actually forgotten how unpleasant rifles are until I went to this LR workshop last year. Under a metal roof, maybe 2 other suppressed guns. Some WinMags with brakes to boot. I make barricades from my gear to make it tolerable, still was so tired after a full day of that I just needed a dark room and silence.
I have known people who worked for mfgs, contract providers, spend all day shooting things like .50s. When they get suppressed: a delight, instead of laying on the gravel trying not to cry after 8 hours of testing
