LOL why the fuck would they go after cops when theres plenty of unarmed targets they could hit? Let's just use 911 to excuse violating the constitution because it "makes us safe". In any case, the upkeep, gas, etc. make it dumb from a financial perspective. As was previously mentioned this also drives a wedge between the cops (civil servants and still civilians) and the people they "Protect And Serve".

These departments "procure" these toys under their homeland security plan in case the need arises for them to use these types of vehicles to combat domestic terrorisim, at least that is why they do it around here or so they say. When the homeland security budget came out, all kinds of departments accross the country began purchasing specialized vehicles that they may never need but just like in any other government service, if the free money is there someone is going to spend it regardless. Most of these vehicles are just a simple paper drill to transfer ownership from the MIL to local agency. At least the dispurtion of funds is now more connected to population served by department. When this first started there where small town departments with 3-5 officers getting multi-million dollar NBC rigs that are basically parked in the county lot and have never been used.
When I lived down in Imperial Beach CA (last town before the mexican border in southern CA) all of the border patrol agents use to drive stripped down ford F-250's for driving the fence line. After the HS budget was released, they all started driving H1 or H2's that spent some time at the local 4X4 shop getting every possible thing you can imagine put on them. Still drive the same fence line but now they do it in a six figure vehicle instead of a 17k pick-up. As has already been said, many of the departments that purchase these things will not be able to maintain them in the long term and eventually a majority of this stuff around the country will start showing up in local government auctions.

im not wanting to jump on the band wagon but in answer to your question... Anyone that is willing to let me live my life they way i want to. In in my most pleasing way, i agree to let thiem live liek they want to also. I promise not to take from them, if they promise not to steal from me. Easy.
I have a friend that always talks about the social contract. And how that contract requires all kinds of things exist and have power. I told him my contract is much simpler and older. Live and let live. As long as what we do doesnt affect the other person phycisally or financially... well... fair game.
Im not ready to start saying your a slave lol, but i do understand the sentiment from others. At the point that i willingly give my freedom to another, whats left that cant be taken away from me? I may not be capable of much, but i can at least speak out against tyanny in any form. regardless of the aggressor. Whether its tyranny by a few, or tyranny by a lot of people. Most people agreeing with something doesnt, in my mind, make it right or just. I beleive that no law is just that forces a behavior or consequence on my actions when they have no effect on aother person. But thats just me.

I personally would rather our pd's have them then some other terrorist nation. I don't have a problem with the police. Most every one I have met have been stand up guys, but I know that there are rotten ones. Usually the people who have problems with the police are the ones that are toeing the line with the law.

You're thinking about this upside down. It is the "authorities" who are living in constant fear, blown way out of proportion to the actual threat, causing legitimate concerns.
If a normal guy is a bit paranoid based on some suspect evidence, he gets labelled a crazy. If a LEO is a bit paranoid based on some suspect evidence, somebody's door gets kicked down, flashbangs tossed in, and guns pointed at possibly completely innocent human beings.
If only the same standard applied both ways.
I am white, male and follow the rules so I dont have a problem with cops getting these toys. I don't think my head is buried in the sand, but Ive been wrong b4 and will be again. I think cops should have more power, because it wouldn't affect me. Every profession has bad apples, I try not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

One officer of that team was a family acquaintance whos feet were barely dry from "Th'Nam". He introduced my shins to the great little tool, the ASP. When my Dad came to pick me up at the mobile brig , I was shocked and pleased that his major concern of the whole ordeal was how "militarized" the police force was. My restraint and brief incarceration were "almost " forgotten. This "militarization of the local police force was a MAJOR concern to Daddy for the rest of his life. BTW, SWAT showed up at the scene in freshly painted deuce&1/2's.

I read about parts of gangland & on the southern border where the law does not have control. That seems crazy to me! You should never be able to outgun the cops. Lastly, if you present a weapon to police or run from the police why shouldn't they be allowed to cut you in half? Again this is my bias because I am not profiled & harassed by cops, but it's proven profiling WORKS!
the problems arise when 2 year olds are injured with flashbangs, when 12 year olds are shot in the back for having airsoft guns, when 17 yr olds are killed in their homes for answering the door with Wii remotes, when newspaper delivery ladies are shot up, when teargas grenades burn down your home. I am all for the police catching bad guys, it just seems to me like there is less of that and more of the leo's playing army.
And two cops were just killed in Vegas because the cauldron of hate flowed over a bit. Stirring the pot is not a solution.

Agreed, bitching is not an effective strategy. However, discussion on social networks (like internet forums), has led to "revolutions" all over Europe and the middle East and communication is key to effecting change. I read an article that mentioned why some of the departments wanted these. A sheriff mentioned that they needed one, due to the vets coming home and having a greater understanding of IED's and how to use them against LE. He continued to mention how vets have superior training compared to LEO's. He felt that it was necessary to balance out the playing field.

@ SM & Black, I couldn't agree more! But I don't see a way to have perfect police. They are ppl that I choose to trust because most are good ppl trying to protect & serve. They NEED the tools to deal with all threats (imo) because we as a society have those that would prey on the weak. Its a trade off but i don't see how we change the real problem, the scum that make cops a necessary evil.
It does bother me just a little that our L/E personnel are looking more like Nazi gestapo these days. I still remember when the everyday cop on the street had a haircut that looked just like your dear old dad's and his shoes were patten leather instead of combat boots. Now we see this "war" like armament on the street. it makes you wonder if something is brewing to shove a very distasteful item down our throats in the not so distant future. with the moral collapse occurring and the economy going south, the powers in control may be gearing up for what a lot of people see coming. I can answer that. you change the laws that are making it profitable for these criminal elements to exist. look at the war on drugs. The cartels it created are going to be almost impossible to stomp out without a full blown war.
Of course local PD's need shit like this, especially Texas. How else are they going to deal with the problem the fed has created with the flood of cartel gang members coming accross the border.
