Gunsmithing Laterally adjusting buttpads

I've found the above feature to be beneficial on the MDT XRS that I have, made possible via their adjustable buttpad mechanism.

I think the official term (if there is one) for such an adjustment, is 'offset'.

I have mine setup so that the buttpad is to the right, when viewing the rifle from behind. I'm a right-handed shooter, so the location of the butt pad mimicks 'cast off' as seem in some traditional stocks (obviously this feature isn't possible in a chassis, unless you designed it with such an adjustment in mind). I find this setup to allow better alignment behind the rifle, as the action and scope is closer to the centeline of my body.

Anyway, many of you will already be aware of such a feature and its benefits. I basically started this thread to bug KRG about updating their recoil pad design, to allow such an adjustment. Both Manners and Magpul have already done this, seems to be a good way of adding the option without increasing weight and cost via an additional machined part.

Kick Eez makes both designs of pad, would seem pretty simple to update the current KRG design to allow the same feature. Would be an ideal pairing with their adjustable butt pad mechanism IMO.

I've already emailed their very helpful and receptive CS department. Hopefully a few people agree with me.

Just to be a jagoff, it's not really offset.
Your stock has neutral (zero) cast.

It's just an adjustable buttpad, bringing the pad only into your shoulder pocket.
Your rear of your stock isn't at an angle or offset from the grip back to buttpad as shown.

Update, this setup works very very well on a factory T3x CTR stock. Minimal inletting of plastic inner area behind buttpad required to accomodate the round head of the bolt within the adjusting mechanism.

Adjusting mechanism does add a little to the overall LOP but roughly equivalent to the factory buttpad and 2 spacers, if not slightly less.

It continues to blow my mind that some chassis manf still insist on their own proprietary recoil pads....particularly if they use other than the common 3 1/8" hole spacing.

I have a Vision chassis with their latest "Gen 3" recoil assembly and a stock smith friend of mind is currently grinding a Kick-eez pad for it (1/2" pad to reduce LOP and not be hard as a rock). And of course Vision is in Europe (Scandinavia really) so hole spacing is 79mm which is close but not quite 3 1/8" but we can make it work.

Fully adjustable recoil pad hardware, and a wide variety of often changed recoil pads, have been standard fare on skeet and trap shotguns for decades.

As far as moving the pad laterally, for that to work I presume that one would also need/should have an comb (cheek piece) that adjusts laterally also.

Again, common fare on target shotguns.

Yeah I'd prefer to not have a built in cheek piece at all and build it up to my liking via pipe insulation and a 'stock pack' over the top (Hunter Specialities make a cheap yet fully fearured one) vs. an 'adjustable' cheek piece from Tikka (i.e only goes up and down a wee bit and moves when you don't want it to!)

Personally think the advantage lies in having the butt/recoil pad of the rifle into the shoulder whilst shooting with a square to target vs. conventionally angled stance. Plus being able to flip the recoil pad so it os 'upside down' as most people have a shoulder pocket that accomodates it better vs. thick on top and tapering down.

Only person to openly talk about this in any depth has been Caylen Wojcik of MDS. Has really improved my shooting(hunting focused) as it allows me to rapidly shoulder the rifle and align onto target with good natural point of aim. Some rifles will never shoulder correctly as you create angles between the chest/shoulder pocket because the minute you add recoil, you will lose the position.

Is the Kick-Eez buttpad soft, with no hard outer ridge? And how thick is it?

KRG’s thin pad is soft in the middle but hard on the edges due to a hidden plastic ridge that runs around its circumference. Their regular pad is nice, however.

Yes, it's a laminate of soft rubber material but dense so resonably durable. But there is a solid plastic 'back plate' right behind it (not the bit marked KRG).

It's 1.5cm thick exatcly which Google says is 0.591 worth of Former British Colony units

Ok, so that solid plastic plate is flat, with no internal hidden ridge that goes up into the pad? That’s what that blasted KRG thin pad does.

Feels fine in the middle but all along the edge I’ve got like 1/8” of padding (if that!) in a supposed 1/2” pad!

In other words, when you squish down on the pad, you don’t feel a thin ridge anywhere. You just feel the plastic at the back?

Yes, correct. No ridge felt, all nice and soft surface but not so soft that you land up compressing the pad too much and losing LOP like Limbsaver.

Kick Eez do screaming deals (free shipping and % off) for US customers but us in the outside world are stuck paying high shipping rates.

No worries at all, the KRG plastic adjustable butt and the Manners Kick Eez pad have certainly improved my Tikka CTR to no end. Actually allows proper shoulder fit and a game changer if doing standing unsupported (reading David Tubb's 'High Power Rifle' got me looking into it, and this setup is much lighter and cheaper than the full metal units he used to sell).

Its built like a standard butt pad. As said by @caberslash Kickeeze has a hard backer plate as do all reasonable aftermarket pads like Pachmayr and Limbsaver.

Having an outer hard plastic frame around a soft butt pad interior is about as stupid as Vision putting a hard plastic cant adjustment knob in the middle of their first gen pad. They must have got a lot of feedback on that one as that was discontinued quite quickly.

It continues to amaze me that chassis manf still use proprietary and often totally shitty butt pads. Yeah...so they can sell more in replacement parts...but really, that ain't a significant opportunity to make $$.

Personally, I like Kickeeze and put one on both my Vision and OG JAE (another proprietary pad but at least it was soft).
