I was out in the desert brushing up my skills on whistle pigs with my 10/22 and came across some other folks doing the same. One of them said that I should be really careful with the scope that I have because it was a "collectors" item. The scope is a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2 power with a single tapered post and fine wire cross hair recticle. Now that I've looked at it close I see it does have a low serial # (only three digits). I've had this scope for more than 30 years, it came with a rifle I bought which the guy I bought it from said his father had made for a hunt in Europe before WW1. I still have the rifle as well is is a beauty and my regular elk hunting companion. It is a J.P Sauer & Sons 30 USG with a 1906 Mauser bolt action, beautiful engraving double set trigger, short octagon barrel that tapers into round. It's a true Alps mountain rifle. Anyway the scope came on that. My question is, should I not be dinking around with that scope, is it really collectible?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

"Collectibility" and how much a scope is "Worth" is only as much as someone is willing to pay for it. These scopes, while vintage, command a price tag of anywhere from $300 good used condition, to $400 in excellent condition.

If you have any concerns about it, I would put it up and leave it alone if it is still in good functional condition, just due to the age of the scope. I have seen several of them, and most are beat all to crapola. The finish is definately the first thing to go, especially since most were used quite a bit in the field.

I would just take good care of it, the prices may end up going up later on... who knows.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

Thanks for the information and response. Yes, mine is well used, but it still helps me knock the snot out of those little critters.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

Well I have the pictures but can't figure out hoe to the load them to the site. The link for loading an image keeps asking for a url location which i don't have, they are just coming off a smart card. If any one can direct me in this I'd appreciate it??

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

Load them to Photobucket or some other image hosting site. Once loaded, they will give you the URL tag line to use in your post here on the Hide.

If you run into trouble, there are a few threads here to help you along with the process. If nothing else, PM me, and I will help you get them posted.

That link will take you to a slide show with images.

Z -thanks for your reply, I'm sure there is a better way than this but it's all I could come up with at the moment.

This may be a better link:

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

Good advice thanks. It was the only scope I had sitting around last year and I found that I couldn't hit a thing with the iron sights any more, my eyes just didn't focus well both close (sights) and far (target). I was also broke so a new scope wasn't in the cards. But you're right and I'll need to make the switch.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

That's a neat old scope, but not worth a whole lot as a collectible because of the finish wear. That doesn't make it any less nostalgic though.

If you're interested in getting rid of it, I'd love to give it a good home. I've got a 1903a3 (a4 sniper clone project) in my closet that would look mighty good with this on it.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

Sorry it took so long to reply, I just got the chance to get some photos. Here they are:

Just noticed that the Redfield mount on here is the original that came with the Lyman scope when I bought the rifle back about 1978.

Re: Looking for honest info on a Lyman Alaskan

BCW - Thanks for the offer on a home for the Lyman but for now I'll just hold on to it. I just posted a link to images of the rifle as well.
