The formula ensures you are observing the correct range and height for trace. Focusing the scope so your target is crisp and clear; allows you to follow trace to target impact. When the scope is not focused on the target you will lose visible trace before impact.

Bullet trace can be seen in almost all conditions, but is best on a day that the light is behind you. The observer watches trace to call a second round, if the first is a miss. Observer uses a 15-20 power scope located on the upwind side and behind shooter. As range increases trace will appear higher and as you adjust for wind the more up wind the trace will appear, before it curves in toward the target.
Here is a better way to express the formula.

You mention that you do not clan the barrel often. 500 rounds I believe. I know that my AR 10 barrel looks dirty to the eye after 60-100 rounds. What do you do, if anything between the "major" cleaning you showed?? Also, is the cleaning cycle different between a gas gun like the AR 10 and a bolt gun like the 700???

On both the gas guns and the bolt, I usually just tug a bore snake through at the end of the shooting day.
On gas guns I strip, clean and lube the bolt every time I shoot. If you go too long without cleaning all the moving parts they can get sluggish and fail to feed reliably. You really don't NEED to clean it, but you do need to oil them up frequently (at least on most AR pattern rifles).

First off, thanks for all the informative videos and taking the time to put them together.
I am getting ready to make the first jump into punching paper and banging steel at long range (max distance = <800m) but I don't know what caliber to go with. I see that a lot of people use .308 but I have been thinking about .223. I have been looking at ballistic calculators and noticing that drop is similar between the two but the .223 gets pushed around more. Also .223 is about $10 cheaper per box and hand loading is not in the cards right now. Can you offer up some pros and cons between the two calibers?

While watching the go pro video I nocticed the Bushnell HDMRG2 on your rifle. Does that mean you are almost ready to post the review on it and the SS 5-20x50HD?

The SWFA-SS 5-20x50 review is almost done. The shooting is complete and I am about to wrap it up. I have just been crushed for time.
I have had the HDMR out for a couple weeks now, but I have not shot the tracking test on it. Most of what I shot at the match this weekend was holding. There were a couple of dialing stages and the scope appears to track with the know data for the AE MkII.

The new camera, while noticeable, doesn't significantly impact the overall quality of these videos considering their info and purpose. If you have the time in the future, the Cannon was great, but I'd rather have more info than extremely high video quality if time prohibits having both.
Question: The used gun market is rich with possibilities and sometimes the only option for budget shooters. Assuming you cannot shoot a used rifle prior to purhcase, how would you inspect it and what do you think are the most important questions to ask?

I appreciate the comments. Unfortunately fame and fortune are most likely not going to come to me as a result of this show, but I do enjoy doing it. While I would prefer to have the image quality of the 60D on a regular basis, the current PC just isn't keeping up. I can render the footage from the SR11 almost in real time since I don't have to process it like the Canon. I can set the 60D up so I don't have to do the processing, but then the picture quality is about the same as the SR11. I will be upgrading the workstation at some point to alleviate some of these issues, but hardware encoders are not cheap.
I hope that the mix of cameras I have available now will allow me to streamline the workflow and still deliver a visually appealing product.
As long as you guys keep watching and keep subscribing I will keep doing this. The show will evolve as we go along, but the goal is to keep the quality high and the content interesting.

Is it possible to show exactly how to do a ladder test on any of your rifles. I kind of know how it is supposed to work, but a video would be very informative.

Love the video's your doing. The length is fine on them and they have a ton of useful information on them. I know that you have mentioned it several times in different episodes now but can you explain the ladder testing a little more in depth for me? I have somewhat of an idea of how to go about doing it, but a little more clarification would be great as I'm getting ready to work up a heavier bullet load for one of my rifles.

So, i dont post a lot here (as you can see) I prefer to just soak up knowledge where I can...but I felt like i need to say "Thank You" for putting out this video series. I've picked up a lot, and unlike most video channels, I've yet to roll my eyes or even really disagree with anything you've had to say.

I use Hoppe's #9 for lubing my cases when reloading. Its thin, uniform, wipes off easy, and doesn't gum up the dies.
