Hi!

Will be running 6.5CM in my old AICS mags in the near future, with the long VLD´s i´ll need every bit of space in the mag i can get. I´ve heard different ways of going about it but none that seems easily doable. We are talking about getting rid of the plate that AI insists (anyone know why on earth they do that btw?) on putting in the front inside of the magazine.

So suggestions from people that have done this (preferrebly on a mag that looks like mine) would be much appreciated!

The only way to do it right is to drill through the spot welds and remove the plate then weld the holes closed. To do it well and eliminate the need to grind the weld on the inside of the mag, I machined a block of brass to fit tightly inside the mag thereby providing a flat surface to allow the filler to flow while welding. Then all you need to do is grind the weld on the outside of the mag.

Grind the spot welds out from the inside with a carbide Burr in a Dremel or die grinder. Just grind enough that you can break the plate out of there, and then smooth it down. You don't have to weld a hole shut if you don't make one in the first place.

An alternative would be to order the Accurate Mags that don't have the plate. They make them with and without. Also, you didn't mention what action you have. A notch in the feed ramp may be required.

What he said. Works very well in the three AICS I did.

Just a thought. Have you looked at the mags from American rifle company? I love em and no binder plate.
I tried them but found them unreliable..... tired all the fixes and haven’t had luck making them run reliability, especially if they get a little dirty....

Nothing beats the original AI mags for reliability...... I’ve sucessfukky used the drill / weld method but I used aluminum for the backer when making the spot welds, worked like a champ
