Monpod giving you that "sinking" feeling?

I've seen quite a few comments that someone's rear monopod is sinking down into the ground during use and have experienced the same issue myself. Here is a quick and inexpensive mod that will help with that problem.

Setup: Sig 556 DMR w Accu-shot BT12-QK01 mounted to Magpul PRS stock.

I ordered some Carex black 1" cane replacement tips from HealthProductsForYou.com; Cat.# A720-00; box of 2; $3.95 (see Figure 1 below).

The cane tip fits very snugly over the monopod base. I can't imagine that it would ever come off, even during strenuous use. However, it is removable for cleaning dirt, rocks, etc., without too much difficulty if necessary. In Figure 2 are shown images without (at left) and with (at right) the cane tip in place.

The diameter of the monopod base is 1.14"; the cane tip has a diameter of 1.53". Thus, the overall area of the base is increased by greater than 80%, which helps to keep the base from digging into dirt or soft ground as much. The cane tip does not interfere with the operation of the monopod in any way, nor does it prevent folding the monopod closed. It's not perfect, but it definitely makes a difference.

Re: Monpod giving you that "sinking" feeling?

gstaylorg- I am planning on getting a monopod for my PRS stock on my AR10 build- seen in my pic below.... is the one you got the best height and model in your opinion or would you go in a different direction if you had another chance? or does anyone else have any thoughts on this matter- i am also getting an atlas bipod as well and want to be the right height in both the front and back- I know they adjust but still?

If you check out the Accushot website, you will find some very good information on how to select the proper length monopod:

http://www.accu-shot.com/how_to_best_size_accu-shot_precision_monopod.php

As you'll be using a semi-auto platform, there are a few things you want to consider. First, what is the capacity of the mags you'll be using? A 30 round mag requires more clearance than does a 20 rounder. Second, is there any incline (up or down) in the place(s) you shoot most often? For example, at my 600 yd range, there is very little incline between the firing line and the 400, 500, and 600 yd berms. However, if I want to shoot at 100 yd, there is a pretty steep incline (~30-40 degrees). Obviously, you need to extend the monopod further for that level of incline. So where and what type of shooting you'll be doing are an important consideration.

Having said that, even with a specific length monopod, you can get a fair amount of play beyond the inherent adjustment range of the unit itself. For example, shortening or lengthening the bipod legs, using a small block of wood or something similar (like a short piece of 2" x 4") can be used to extend the useful range of adjustment. I would try to get the most suitable length from the outset so as not to have to do those types of things every time I shoot, but they can be done when necessary.

As your weapon has a PRS stock, you have the ability to mount a monopod to the factory rail. From the picture, I'd guess the dimensions of your rifle are very close, if not identical to, the DMR in my pictures above. So the same model as I listed above (BT12-QK) is probably the one you want, but I would definitely set your rifle up level as described in the selection guide on the Accu-Shot webpage and measure, just to be sure. [NOTE: I made a mistake in the original post that I just caught - the monopod shown is the BT12-QK, NOT the BT13-QK, which I also have on a different weapon, sorry for the error, which I just edited).

As far as how I like it, Kasey and the folks at Accu-Shot make a fantastic product, and you will not find better people to deal with anywhere. So the answer would be emphatically, yes! Using a monopod seems to be not only driven by the type shooting you will be doing, but also a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like it much better than a rear bag, but YMMV. There are a number of other threads here where you can read about various people's takes on different types of rear support, many of whom have light years' more experience than I do. So you might want to do a little searching/reading before ordering. But if you decide to go with a rear monopod, you won't be sorry for choosing the Accu-shot, IMO.
