This is a review of my experience of purchasing a custom rifle from Tactical Rifles out of Zephyrhills, FL. The experience has been interesting at best. Unfortunately the experience has been mostly negative with a very few positives at all. My best advice for anyone going through a big purchase, whether it be a gun or something else that they value is Buyer Beware! Check the Better Business Bureau, get online and read blogs surrounding the product (for me I should have read more shooting blogs with everyday Joe American and not rifle magazine reviews where people get paid to shoot the rifles.)

After a very long wait from order to receiving the rifle I had been on a roller coaster of anticipation and delay. I picked it up on Monday 12/16/2013 and finally got to the fire it Wednesday 12/18/13. Unfortunately by the time I received the rifle most of my joy of waiting for the rifle had been taken because I had to have an attorney contact the company after a wait of over 2 years (the industry standard is about 10 months).

When I finally received the rifle, I was very disappointed with the cosmetics of the rifle itself. As you will read in the review below, there are several issues that I should not have had to deal on a custom rifle that cost $7300 (price includes Nightforce NXS 5.5-22ZS Optic). It was very disappointing and disheartening. Of course after some of the ups and downs of waiting over 2 years for it, when I went to pick it up I had the question in my mind of "I wonder what's wrong with the rifle?"

I ordered a Tactical Rifles M40 in .308 win with TR Match Grade Chimera receiver with spiral fluted bolt. . The barrel was a #7 Contour barrel with custom black finishing and a muzzle brake. I also ordered the Manners T4 stock with adjustable cheek piece. I ordered side mounted flush cups for QD swivels and the swivels themselves. The optic I chose was a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 ZS with mil-dot reticle and the Chimera scope rings. The hydrographics paint scheme is the ATACs camo. I ordered the Pelican Case with laser cut foam for it to be shipped in. The order date was 7/20/2011. The date I received the rifle was 12/16/2013. The total cost of the rifle with optic was $7297.00.

When I received the rifle, the hydrographics job they did was lacking at best. Again, it should have been pristine for the amount of money that I spent. Around the safety switch the hydrographics looked sloppy and around the flush cups the hydrographics are cracking and chipping. My flush cups were not "flush" on the rifle at all and the QD swivels that I had purchased were not sent at all. When I picked up the rifle, the magazine was shipped separately so I did not have that with the shipment. The only paperwork I received was a letter stating that the magazine and other accessories were shipped separately. The rifle had not been cleaned, and was told by the owner that this was proof that the rifle had been test fired. As far as the rifle scope rings, bolt, action and scope, all were tight and looked great. I took the rifle home and waited for UPS to receive the rest of my accessories. Of course they didn't show up until 2 days later.

When I did receive the accessories, all that I received was the 5 round magazine and the packaging and allen wrench of the TR Scope Rings. I did not receive any serial numbered target that I was told would come, nor did I receive a T-Shirt that they said they would be sending. The t-shirt isn't a big deal, it was just a little frustrating when I was told to be expecting things and didn't receive them. I also received no invoice, paperwork about the rifle, nor did I receive any documentation regarding the Nightforce Scope or the Manners Stock.

I then was able to shoot the rifle the next day and this is where a lot of things came together and this is the "good" part of the whole thing. The rifle shot beautifully. I was only able to shoot long enough to verify zero and "enjoy" the rifle. I shot Federal GMM 168gr HPBT. I was out 100 yards and after a short break in period, I put a total of 20 rounds down range. I couldn't believe how well the groupings were. I'm not sure how to measure them and will be buying a caliper. (Do you measure center to center or overall of shots fired?)

To be fair, I sent Dave Rooney, President of Tactical Rifles and email explaining my disappointment of the hydrographics and flush cups. He was very quick to call me back and said that he would be glad to redo the hydrographics and fix the flush cups at no cost. His only request was to do it after the Christmas holidays. I also emailed them about the QD swivels and the missing paperwork and was told that I would be receiving them in the mail, but as you can imagine I have received nothing to dated. So I am now looking for a local gunsmith who can go over the rifle and help me with the issues I have.

I must say that the waiting period, missing accessories and documentation and the cosmetic issues are a huge strike! The shoddy work on the hydrographics and flush cups really put me over the edge. I really like Dave Rooney and he has been a great person to speak to. Either that, or he is really a great talker, but the weight of the issues, considering what I paid for the rifle, is just too much.

Some have asked me if the wait time is worth it and that's a loaded question. Does the rifle shoot well? Yes, It shoots well, but in my opinion, the rifle I received should not have left the shop looking the way it did, again considering the price I paid for the rifle.

How these guys stay in business, and CHARGE THAT MUCH, is beyond me you are on your way to 2 tac ops rifles at that price point. Just ridiculous. Please do post up some pics of the groupings! It's will be interesting to see what they look like, and please keep us updated on how everything turns out.

Also, I don't know if I would personally want my rifle back in the hands of that asshat. I would just about recommend another gun coating specialist.

Andrew

Edit: these guys are a couple more screw ups away from their own show on discovery channel.... Lol

Your a VERY mild tempered gentleman (no offense meant by this) to have this quality of work for that money, and still have a nice thing to say about this Rooney guy. I have read to many horror stories about this guy and his "custom rifles"... thank the lord I found Snipers Hide before EVER considering spending my money with this shop. I hope nothing else is wrong with the rifle and wish you good fortune on the repair.

Also, another member on the hide said his scope ring caps were torqued down to 41in pounds and bit into the scope finish. I am glad to hear that your scope is functional but I would(if it were myself) take the scope caps off and check the finish on that very high priced scope, but that's just me. As well as taking the action out of the stock to see the "bedding" job that they seem to do. Also, remember to take pics of everything and post them up.

EDIT: WATCH THIS VIDEO. And check the same spots on your gun. Like the bedding and things that you can check without need of a gunsmith and take pics.

Did you pay by credit card? I wonder if you called and told them the issues and you wanted your money back if they would do it? Credit card companies usually side with the customer. At least mine as always been great about it. These guy's are hacks and it pisses me off. I think I may just have to stop by their booth at shot show. Would you mind texting me pics of the screw ups? I want to go over to his booth show him the pic and ask what smith would charge over $5,000 for this shit.

PM me if interested.

It's taken me a long time to become mild tempered. (no offense taken) I take that stance because there is nothing I can do about getting the $$ back. I see you're in Cypress, TX. I am in Katy. Have you heard of Ranger Point Precision? Ranger Point Precision | Custom firearms, gunsmith, FFL, Texas, Marlin They are out of Cypress and I am looking at them to possibly do the repair work.

No I have not heard of them. I'm willing to bet they are better than TR though. I'm having a 338LM being built by Robert's Precision Rifles in Spring, and so far Aaron's service is first class! I even got a thank you card in the mail a couple of days after dropping of the rifle to him!

Is this your first rifle? Could the grouping be slightly shooters error? Because I thought they had a "1/2" guarantee" or some BS of the sort.

Not say that isn't a respectable grouping because it is.
But if I paid that much for a rifle it better be one ragged hole.

It is my first custom rifle. I've been a "shooter" in long range for about 4 years now so it could be my error.

OP, if you are satisfied with the rifle minus the cosmetics , your best bet may be to keep it and possibly have someone else fix it right down the road. Read up on TR here and prepare yourself. You DO NOT want to send it back. It will almost definitely come back worse. I only speak from reading several other in depth customer reviews as I've have not dealt with them (thank god).
You deal with them anymore and you will definitely need that lawyer again. Good luck and I feel for you and all others that spend that kind of money only to be disappointed with little to no means of restitution.

Not wanting to insult the OP, but nothing about that rifle says "M40." Not the stock, not the barrel, not the action, and certainly not the quality of work, or the grouping. Looking at the rear of the receiver, it looks like it was bedded with Play-Doh.

Just an FYI from someone who just got screwed by a merchant for a 7k+ purchase, they can't do anything after 60-90 days no matter how fraudulent it is. Thats why you should never prepay anybody at least in full for a purchase with a long lead time. I'd send the rifle back (with verifiable tracking# and paying UPS or someone to pack, ship, insure, document it) demanding a full refund.

This is where Tactical Rifles "contract" comes into play where it states "no refunds" to cover their shitty work.

Not true. If it is a custom item with a longer expected delivery your credit card company will do something. I just got my credit card company to refund me from the KAC group buy almost a year after I had paid in full.

OP,

I am sorry for your experience, but letting us know is appreciated. I am new to this forum and am in the process of placing my first custom rifle order. Real-world stories, like yours, are a big help to those who are relatively new. I live in the Houston area as well. I was just at PSC range today.

Just because a contract states that doesn't mean its legally binding. I'd venture to guess a lawyer could tear that up in a matter of minutes. Looks to be a rather easy case of failure to deliver what was ordered with all the factors considered. I'd think this is def worth paying a lawyer for and wouldn't be surprised if there is previous or existing cases against them.

Hi my name is Dan Kooney....no wait that sounds too much like Dave Rooney....idiot, these Hide guys will figure it out. Dave Tooney here and my TR M40 1,203 confirmed kills SEAL OPSEC .308 is the greatest custom rig I ever spent $9,246 on. Don't ask me to post any target pictures because everything I shoot with this lightsaber is fucking destroyed. I can't believe there are all these negative threads about the tactical machinists at TR.net. I call my employees "Tactical Machinists" because gunsmiths is for civilian pussies. Edit: I didn't mean "MY" employees, this is not Dave Rooney. I Promise.

Anyways, I'm a new member here and just felt compelled to respond to clearly a jealousy thread full of lies and altered photographs with a completely coincidental post praising the killing prowess of a TR rifle.

Aren't you also the exclusive dealer for Counter Sniper and NC star? ;)

You got lucky. AMEX stated otherwise and I had a clear case against a company for fraud for an item that had a several month lead time.

Nope, not me. I'm just a regular guy from Florida, I mean Idaho. While those products you mentioned are completely badass, I'm in no way affiliated with TR.net. I just enjoy driving down 5th ave in Zephyrhills and eating at Manolo's Italian. Is it odd that there is a law firm right next to TR.net's building? I've already shared too much info but I think I'm safe. Only operators know how to use Google Maps. Did I mention how great my TR rifle is?

I always do a intensive study before making a major purchase. Companies like this would dry up overnight if everyone did the same. Gun magazine reviews don't mean squat because they are sent a different product than what the consumer gets.

I'd rather watch Rosie odonnel get assfucked by a donkey and the suck the donkey jizz right out of her asshole, gurgle it, then snowball Elton John than have anything to do with tactical rifles and that shitbag Rooney

That flush cup actually had me cringe. If that is any indication of their lack of attention to detail you can only imagine what is going under the hood - aka stock. If that can make it out of a quality control process then that means they have no quality control. emt_jaybird, sorry you had to buy that abortion of a rifle but I guess you are taking it about as well as you can...chalk it up to the many life-lessons you learn along the way. That's sad, just sad.
