In his (meager and half-hearted) defense, @flyer was viewing this project in terms of normal human achievement. He had no idea that @sirhrmechanic can machine shit that has DARPA scratching their heads. Nor has he seen @oneshot86 at work in real life and understands that the honey badger is not governed by the laws of mortal performance, whether that be with a chainsaw or a welder. That dude could weld a dick onto a snowman without ever setting down his Natty Light.

Just got to spend a few minutes on the phone with the honey badger before he had to go peddle some plants. As @Mike Casselton referenced, I am indeed in school at our Maritime Training Center for welding. It's been a bit of a grind.
My free time has been been spent between my newly rebuilt pool and enjoying the best redneckery the South has to offer this time of year, doing massive cookouts and river running with buddies. I'd probably fill a page or two between "Nom Nom" and "Your View" if I ever had the motivation to post
Damn, I guess I missed this and it was my own damn thread! I saw him early on but dismissed him... He did have a good idea about looking for channel that would work, but I couldn't find any. I tried to be a sport with him but I guess he wasn't gonna have it. I know it requires skill and the proper gear to weld aluminum, but I also knew that anybody that could do it probably had that and some scrap and could do a couple welds the next time they fire it up, no big deal.
It's kinda funny... Most of those other sites are all pretty much the same. They are so rules laden that someone spouting shit can't be called out for fear of being banned. Some like pappacock get so used to it they expect a similar response (very rarely does someone so interesting come along that I scour the net looking for more). Then they come here and step on a landmine! For every dildo that comes around though there's plenty of new guys that add to the soup instead of pissing in it.
I'll take Sir up on his idea and get him back with some IPA's we have out here, hopefully some he's never seen. That's one thing we have in spades out here, in particular IPA's. 12 of those 22oz 7%+ high IBU ales, some I'm pretty sure you can only get out here. I was gonna grab 'em last night when I went to the store but figured I'd wait a couple days and go by this store my buddy told me about, supposed to be one of the better beer stores around here and they have stuff you can't find at other places. So I think he'll dig 'em.

So since it's 30 degrees cooler in the workshop at Schloss Nitrocellulose than it is in on the grounds... I went rummaging through my pile of junk
Came up with a nice 3 x 3 piece of 1/8" wall thickness stainless steel tube... Had some welding scars on one side... but that's the side I'll cut off! 1/8th would be too light, IMHO for aluminum. But in SS, this will be more than strong enough. 1/4" wall Stainless would be a barbell!
Nice to have a big water-cooled bandsaw! 8" slab... no problem. True the end first, then cut a bar.
Cut the shape out with the plasma cutter and left some extra to remove on the mill. Sorry, no pictures of plasma cutting. Just stare at the sun for a couple of moments and you'll get the idea. Sucked that I was wearing shorts today (did I mention it's hot out and I had not planned to be in the shop? Shop now smells like burning hair.) Then on to the mill....
Carbide bit made short work of the SS edges, not even any coolant needed. Note the machinist jacks used for fixturing. When the pieces were removed, the edges actually 'sprang' out a lot. Lots of stress in that DOM welded stuff. Put it on arbor press and pushed everything back into shape. Then Zip zip! Finish the edges with a DynaFile and a flap wheel to get things nice and rounded so noone will get cut on edges.
Finished part.... After a quick bead blasting and wire-brushing to get it a nice uniform finish. Had to do a bit of bending as I mentioned above, but it's nice and straight. I was a bit worried about whether it would be rugged enough to hold those big, heavy, tough USO optics. They can be a load, you know! So I decided to do a USO test on it...
In the spirit of U.S. Optics... I parked my Jeep on it. It survived fine, not even a mark. Not on the part or the Jeep.
Finished Fleshlight... er... spotting scope mount with some USO porn in the background.
@Strykervet ... part boxed up and will go out Priority Mail tomorrow! You'll have it by the end of the week, if the 4th does not mess up the mail too bad.

Alright, here it is! USO spotter with a custom eyecup (made by another member) that keeps eye relief just right with an LRR-104 Mk5 LRF piggybacked on a Sirhr Custom SS mount! Totally badass. All it's missing is a piece of rail on the side that a PEQ or possibly some other illuminator will attach to. The four holes are for a small elevated rail section I'll install later. The tripod is a cheap one I got for a cheap chrono but it works for the picture. I got a Sirui from Cameraland on sale that'll go down to 5" so it can be used in the prone, but it won't be here for at least a week. Just need to add a Kestrel and a PDA.
It's a really nice looking little field setup and it's as rugged as it gets. Totally satisfied, the mount is solid and well made and supports the weight. Wanted a Spotter 60 and PLRF-15C but divorce derailed that. Even made saving for a Leupold Mk4 60x out of reach. I got this spotter and LRF for $1000 total and the reticle matches the reticles in two of my scopes and the LRF works out to 10km, so I don't think I'm missing out. Leaves me open to finish other projects and to load, load, load.
Cost me some beers and some shipping and I got what I wanted and he got what he wanted --and USPS, they sure as shit got what they wanted!

They're like any other evergreen you have in the south only there isn't anything like the Southern Pine. Those things would rot and break off every winter. Lots of fir, spruce, birch, cedar, pine, etc. The tree in the picture though is actually two trees that grow out of a common trunk. It looks really cool and it looks solid butt trees like that are weak where they bond and can split there. They also tend to grow an upside down question mark shape at the trunk. It's not exactly normal, but if you walk around on Rainier or in the woods you'll run across all sorts of natural grafts and such.
It's probably not the safest 70' tree(s) to have right next to the house. Any of the big trees on this acre can fall and hit the house if they fell right. When I move I'll make sure the trees aren't on my property (and hopefully but up against BLM land!).
