New custom Harris feet

Well like most people I wasnt satisfied with the factory Harris feet. I looked at the Pod-Claws and just didnt want something that gaudy. What I did like was the Atlas spiked feet but no one offers something similar to that for the Harris. Lucky for me I have a lathe. So I got to looking at how the factory feet attach and decided I didnt want to replicate the roll pin thing as I might want different styles of feet. So I decided to machine a piece to give myself 1/2x20 threads to attach the different feet to. I wasnt hard to figure out the design and I made some small pieces of aluminum to attach to the ends of the retracting springs to retain that feature. I also found some rubber stoppers at Lowes that I drilled and threaded to use with I dont want the spikes. What Do yall think?

That looks like the nicest set of feet I have seen for the harris, how much you figure you have invested ($ and time) in the spikes, rubber knobs, and adapters?

Thanks guys. As for money into these.... Probably less than $15 worth of materials and about 3-4 hours of my time all told. The worst part of it was taking the damn bipod apart. The roll pins hold the springs and I couldnt get them back on the way they came off thats why I made the spring keepers inside the legs.

As for making them to sell I wouldnt even know where to start with pricing them. Plus I think I would want to have people ship their bipods to me for installation. What would yall pay for these?

Atlas spikes cost $50. Charge $30-$35 and you'll sell a lot. Just for knowledge why would people need to ship to you? Is it something that each fit is different? Can they be removed easily to put back the original Harris feet?

Ok guys well I think yall have convinced me to go ahead and make about 10 sets to sell. Once I have them made up Ill post them for sale in the FS section.

If one wanted to they could convert the bipod back to the original feet if one wanted but thats why I got the rubber feet too.

There is a guy out in Washington State who makes the spike feet for the Harris bipod as well. He also makes them for another brand but can not remember the other brand since I use the Harris brand. He was recommended by Cailen Wojcik (sorry for the typo)and also accepts plastic over the phone. I reside on the east cost and when I ordered them received them in less than a week. Since I am out of the country at the moment, I can not pass on his info. If you inbox me and when I return in two weeks I can pass that info on to you or contact Cailen he has no issue with passing that info on.

I would buy them in a second. I have always been happy with the Harris but was going to upgrade to an Atlas just for the spikes (I have issues getting the Harris dug in at my range). I too thought the claws were a bit gaudy.

Whilst I can definitely appreciate the necessity as well as the performance of your addition to the 'bipod feet' fleet, I have only one point to make.

The reference to 'gaudy' has been mentioned here a few times already. So I put forth this one question:

Are ya'll aimin' for looks, or performance?

Because no, I'm not on a soapbox here, though I will say that the small AND large claws both definitely PERFORM as they are designed to do. As do the Spike feet. I have them also, and they too perform exactly as they should.

Different feet, different conditions. I'm guessing ya'll also have more than one pair of footwear, eh?

But "gaudy"..... not exactly a word I expected to see here on the 'Hide. Except maybe if there were a "SafeQueen Forum".

I am in for a pair. What about making them with out the spike sleeve and make the spikes. That would be a lot less machining.

@ Sean; I agree function over aesthetics. But If a huge pink dildo duct taped to my barrel would make it shoot better I think Id just settle for less accuracy. Im not saying the Pod-Claws are that bad but they just are too big and crazy looking for me. These spikes dig in very well and allow you to load the bipod correctly on dirt a hell of a lot better than the crappy factory ones. And thats the end game isnt it? If I can do that with a more streamlined tool I will do that.

@ Long Arm; Are you talking about just the tapered portion without the larger boss at the top? I can make them like that if that is something you want. I think that without the boss you run the risk of the spikes sinking down continuously in the dirt with nothing to stop them. I can make them for you though if thats what you want when I get them ready to sell.

Talked to <span style="font-weight: bold">McLarenRoss</span> about posting pics of the ones I make in this thread instead of starting a new one on the same topic. A different design than his, he thought it would be interesting to see what others have come up with.

I've been making these for a few years. I've made some for folks who requested them at ASC and Quantico in the past and continue to make them whenever I get requests.

Feedback has been good and they stick well to damn near anything but glass or polished surfaces. In fact, you can load the bipod enough to break the weld before the feet move...don't ask me how I know. With the spike and the rubber foot combined, they don't sink in sand or loose dirt.

Set pictured is 4+ years old. Though they aren't as sharp as when they were made, they still stick to wooden decking and rocks very well.

Nice job, all around. That last set (done by Brain) could only be improved with a tungsten or carbide 'point'. Tungsten electrode from a TIG welding friend would be what I suggest.

Durable (much harder and tougher than aluminum)
Sharpenable (as with everything, they 'will' dull over time)
Replaceable (though not very likely to need such)

Thanks. I drill out the feet, but there's no threading. Feet are retained with the original roll pin.

The spikes pictured were able to be unscrewed. I was stating that why not just make spikes that are 1 piece and do not unscrew. That would make them a lot easier to make.

I see what your saying. I made them threaded so that I could easily change back and forth between the spikes and my rubber feet.

Yes, changeable feet are a nice option to have. I however would just like the regular spiked version. If I am shooting on something that smooth I'll use my pack.

It just seemed like they would be faster/easier to make.

I have a set of brian's. I love them on every surface i have shot off of.They bite on rocks, dirt, Concrete, grass, and wood. Mine are a permenent part of my haris as I pinned mine solid. Any option is better than the rubber haris feet. brock

A guy at the range had a TRG-22 and a TRG-42 with the Sako claw bipods and they jumped/moved a lot less than my GA on a regular harris.

I had a TRG with the factory bipod for a while and enjoyed the benefit of less movement when loading the bipod. When I turned in the TRG, I missed the benefit of the feet so I made steel feet of similar design for a Harris.

After using the ski/teeth on the Harris for a while, I started making the spikes pictured above to get the same benefit in a more streamlined package.

As Brock (Mountain Shooter) stated above, they make a huge difference in how the bipod bites to the surface you're shooting on.

Ever since I read this thread I've been wanting to make a set for our two LR rifles. Finally got a bit of free time and gave it a go. I'm no machinist but like to tinker and printed out the pictures to work from. They were fun to make and I learned a lot doing it but didn't realize how much work is involved when making them being a novice on a lathe.

After installing them we fired a couple rounds off our bench and the difference was very apparent. Our guns are pretty heavy but they still occasionally get a bounce or slide on the wood, with these points it never moved and you could put more pressure on the bi-pod than is comfortable and it just sticks there. I haven't tried them on our LR pistols yet but am wondering if it might help plant it so we can see hits or misses with them. We have to rely on a spotter to see where we hit or miss to make adjustments. You don't realize how much you miss seeing hits/misses at a match until you shoot and have to wait for the call to make an adjustment.

Hope you don't mind me copying your design McLarenRoss but you did such a great job on yours I wanted to give them a try.

I've been toying with the idea of making something that locks the Harris into mother earth better than rubber feet. This looks to be the absoulte best solution.

McLaren Ross, if I can't produce a set for myself on my old lathe I'll be contacting you and more than willing to compesate you for the work.
