New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

Two small Alaska Moose taken with 6.5 SAUM 4S

I just got back from our annual moose hunt. 2 small Alaskan Moose taken with 6.5 SAUM 4S and 140 Burger 140 hunting VLD'S. Smaller one taken at 463 yds walking down hill, quartering to, with a 30 MPH up hill wind. 1 shot DRT. larger one called in from 742 and and killed at 209 yds, 4 ft off the trail and 36 yards from our machines 1 shot DRT, same bullet. I hunted hard looking for a Grizzly bear after the moose were down but couldn't get on one. I really wanted to kill a bear with this round to see how it does on thick heavy animals. I'm going to try to get out later this fall for a black bear and see how that works. I was skeptical about this round for large Alaskan animals and still had my trusty 30 year old, 19" Sako .375 handy but it wasn't needed. If anyone is wondering about this round on animals larger than Elk, I can assure with good shot placement it is plenty adequate!

I emailed Winchester about WSM brass. They said "It is scheduled for production later in the year". Now if I could just get a response from Remington about SAUM brass production.

Excellent news and congrats on a successful hunt. One shot on a moose at 463y speaks as well of the 6.5 SAUM as it does of your shooting abilities! Good luck on a griz in the future.

TBA 30BA paper has cleared but I haven't made it to my dealer in Anchorage to pick it up yet. Hopefully next month! I have 3 rifles I'm going to run the TBA can on, including a .260 on the Snipers Hide, Area 53 receiver set. I'm looking forward using the TBA can because I'm one of the unlucky few that has "Another" can that actually kills accuracy on my .308 precision rifle.

Once you live and hunt Alaska, all other hunting seems quite tame! But with that said, I'm headed down to Oregon for Muzzleloader Elk next month

Anyone looking for brass might consider a trip to Calgary or looking for a friend up there to get it for you.

I was up there earlier in the month and saw lots of 300 and 7mm SAUM ammo and brass at the sporting goods stores up there.

There is a bit of factory ammo in Calgary at the big box stores. There might be a bit of Rem .300 SAUM brass, but they are now out of stock of any 7 RSAUM.

I emailed Remington about 2 months ago. They basicaly told me that they were concentrating their efforts in other areas (didn't ref what those areas were),and had no plans to manufacture any SAUM brass in the near future. Waiting now on some BO brass from Bullets.com of the Norma variety.

I got a chance to stretch the legs on my 6.5 saum yesterday. This 15in group is 8 consecutive shots at 1500 yds. Still holding moa easily at that range

It's a 4 color flectarn. patriot brown, coyote tan, woodland and whatever dark brown he uses in his multicam.

That all being said, I just bought a 6.5 saum from CPGfan and am really looking forward to shooting her. I've read and studied all the 6.5 saum information and I am super intrigued by this cartridge. I've got an antelope tag, 2 deer buck tags and 2 bull elk tags to fill here in Idaho. And I plan on using this baby for all of them.

I haven't worked a final load but at 500 my saum shows 1505ftlbs and 2283fps. That's a low charge though at 58gr of h1000 pushing the 130vld.

My win mag shows 2376ftlbs and 2257fps loaded with a berger 210 with 73gr h1000.

Anyone knows why Copper Creek has 130 gr Berger VLD listed at 3250 fps and GAP has it listed at 3150? I thought specs are the same for 130 gr pill...

VYD. It may be a typo on GAP's end. We recommend the magneto speed chronograph to get your actual velocity.

Well what can I say???... the 6.5 Saum has exceeded my expectations.

To start with I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone at GA Precision. Both rifles that I have ordered from them (once a custom 7.5SAUM and the other the 6.5 Xtreme Hunter) were delivered earlier than the date quoted and each rifle was flawless (no tool marks, scratches, or minor blemishes were to be found). I also ordered a scope from GAP for my Xtreme Hunter & I would also like to give extra thanks to the person that must have bore-sighted the scope for me (classy)!

As others have stated this round is very accurate and the recoil very low. Turning out groups like the one below are very repeatable.

My only concern was how effective this caliber would be for elk… well I got to answer that question this week with a 453 yard shot at a nice bull. It was absolutely incredible to be able to watch the shot impact the bull through the scope and then 3 steps later topple over.

I initially planned on using the 130gr Berger but could not find any... so I went with the 140 Berger. At 450 yards the bullet performed flawlessly.

I ran the 140VLD hunting bullets (unpointed)... And I do the love the stock. I think the thing that I like most about the "Xtreme Hunter" is that it replaces three hunting guns that I have in the safe that I really did not care for. After seeing the results on the elk I feel confident that I can use this one gun from coyotes to elk with no problems. And did I mention that the lack of recoil is incredible! I was able to watch the elk's reaction through my scope so I knew without question I had delivered a devastating blow (I sure couldn't have done that with my 300 WIN Mag).
