New to the sniper field i need help

Hey there Melton... Welcome to the 'Hide. Just a word of advice - be careful about throwing the whole "sniper" thing around as there are many here who can actually lay claim to that title.
You may avoid some good natured sarcasm if you would stick to phraseology like practical, precision, etc... Just a suggestion. As for rails and rings: I tend to lean towards Seekins Precision and American Rifle Company. Of course there are a number of other great manufacturers such as Badger, Leupold, Spuhr, etc. Try a Google Custom Search of the 'Hide using this link - https://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=001874066227474777122:myqcyemnqwa&hl=en and then keep it handy to help with future inquiries before posting questions. I just wish I could move up to sniper and not be stuck as target changer. Damn it some day I guess.
Hogue stocks are the best, good choice. what sniper scope is gonna go on it? i recommend looking at weaver see thru rings, thats what snipers use so they can look down the sniper barrel for quick close range engagements. Also take a look at sniperbuttplugs, they carry a plethora of tactical accesssories for the sniper on the go. If they dont have what you need check out lemonparty.org they always seem to have sniper gear in stock
It's obvious you're going to need a Counter Sniper Scope. I think the are selling the government overruns of them now.

Welcome to the Hide, Melton. If you can wade through the sarcasm and derision there's actually a ton of really smart guys here who are occasionally in the mood to be helpful.
As someone mentioned, the use of the term "sniper" to refer to gear tends to draw alot of fire here.
We'll assume you have a Rem 700 with a heavy contour barrel of some sort, Rem Sendero/Varmint or M24 contour. I think you'll find that the Hogue stock is not what you want, as it's been known to not be rigid enough for repeatable accuracy, but if it gets you shooting, we all started with something less than optimum.
Assuming your rifle is a .308 and you don't have some insane range expectation out of it (like going past a mile) then a 20moa one piece base from Badger or Seekins will be a fairly-priced good starting point.
For rings again check out Seekins and Badger. There's plenty of quality makers out there in addition to these. Some are REALLY expensive, some are cheap but not worth having.
You haven't specified what your goal for this rifle is, or what optics you're using, but the "Options and Accessories for Sale" section generally has a good assortment of rings for sale by a number of quality manufacturers.

While you're waiting for your butt to get back to normal size from the welcome you've received, check out some of the sticky posts on the top of this and the "Rifle Scopes" boards for some good info. You'll also get a little better handle on the terminology here that won't "skyline" you as badly.

In for teh lulz. OP you probably will find most any info you could want/need has been covered at least once before. Try the google search engine for the sight and read awhile before making a thread that will just rehash the same old-same old.

Welcome. If you've read this far through all the dick kicking, here's my 2 cents. I love my Seekins base and rings. If you want to spend less, EGW and Weaver make some nice 20 moa bases. For rings, some TPS rings wouldn't break the bank (if I remember correctly).
True. They just claim to be SEAL's or members of super secret "special forces units".
(What made me say this is the fact we just had one of "those" make the news locally. He decided to face down the local police dept and lucky for him they didn't shoot him.)

Fluting is a must. Go for the tactical fluted rings and if possible a fluted scope. The instant you cut groves into anything it makes it more rigid and tactical.

As far as TACTICAL stuff, you definitely need a SNIPER trigger, SNIPER bipod and a SNIPER drag bag to put it all in. What else would let people know you mean business and know your shit? If I see a SNIPER and he doesn't have all of this I know he's just full of shit. Rings/optics you have to go with the Countersniper brand for obvious reasons. Plus their optics use a specific high end metal alloy that is lighter than most optics, doesnt reflect light off the metal and wont show up on IR.

This is funny. You're describing someone who shows up at the range where I shoot most often. Comes in with his drag bag and a pack, all in woodland camo which is brand new. Not a bit of dirt or scruffing at all. Name tag velcro'd on gear as well. When he opens it up he has every scope accessory known to man including several contrast filters. Also has a polarizing filter so "he can shoot through car windshields with no glare.
Everything you point out absolutely nails this guy and his actions/gear.
What's really the 'capper' is that he claims to have served in "Nam" but by all estimation he had to have enlisted on his 15th birthday, completed basic and advanced training, been assigned to a unit, then attended Scout/Sniper School before being deployed before the troops withdrew in '73. He must have been an absolute prodigy. I guess I was a little slow because Basic and AIT took me over 6 Mo's before I went overseas.
We all know these guys and most ranges have at least one of them. As long as they do not claim to "been there, done that", in Nam or anywhere else, some of them can be quite funny, especially when they start explaining why they do have all their "sniper stuff" and God knows they love talking about that. In the eventuality the guy is a moron, expose him or ignore him, depending on your mood on that day.
This is great advice. To add to this, have you researched spindrift yet? It's very important beyond 25 yards. Stop by meatspin.com and see what spindrift will do to your load.
I sometimes wonder if a few of these guys are anti's trying to get something to attack us with or justify their belief of gun owners. The rest are probably just too stupid to think before they post.
Don't listen to these clowns. Sell that 700, save a few pennies, and head over to tacticalrifles.net
