It's safe.
What would you say if I told you that I maintained an 1.5 MOA group at 400yds across 20rnds of 308, with the barrel unlocked, and without torquing the barrel screws down? I had to come up an additional 2.5 mils, but other than that... nothing to report.

Bahaha! I shot an entire match unlocked and untorqued. Same thing on being about 2 mils off. I shot about a 3" group at 600 on a paper stage.

Some people hear what they want I guess. For the rest of you, you'll notice a machined flat inside your chassis, which the barrel extension comes back and makes full contact with around nearly the entire circumference. That's what keeps it from moving. It's an ingenious design. So yeah... it's safe. The barrel lock is there for a reason. What it is, I'm not sure. Perhaps to try and idiot-proof the rifle for the window-lickers among us? It certainly isn't unsafe firing the rifle without the barrel locked.
Lucky for us, however, it's a free country... and if it makes you feel better to engage the lock, I won't take away your birthday or punch your mother for doing so.
THAT is awesome. lol I feel better now knowing that I wasn't the only one to forget to torque the barrel!

Me: Yes, if you got it from a dealer then it's the dealer who installed the conversion kit and didn't lock the barrel. I'd just call that an oversight, but kind of an important one.

I didn't mean to start a war guys haha. Seems the consensus is that the barrel lock is not necessary for safe function but is an extra precaution and should be done considering it take half a turn of a hex wrench. Thanks for the info.
As for the mag release. Has anyone else noticed it rattles when you shake the rifle side to side? That's normal right?

The barrel lock is unnecessary, If you take a second to look down the fore end you will see that it is a last ditch precaution. Yes I understand that it is there for a reason, I just have not used mine is 3 years is all.

Barrel lock is a precaution that shows the user if the barrel is fully seated rearward to avoid incorrect use and protect the user from making a mistake.
And... Barrel Lock is for provoking heated discussion (and bitch slapping) between board members.
It never bothered me to lock the barrel lock, don't see what's the big deal. If it's unnecessary - it's a small thing, and far from being the only unnecessary thing I do.
Every time I install the muzzle brake it appears to be slightly canted so I have to mess with it several times before I'm happy. I guess I could level the gun and then level the brake. Any tricks for installing the muzzle brake?
Are you using the shim kit on a new brake, or are you using one of the old clamp-on style brakes?
Totally off topic here...but what are people's thoughts on using a bore snake vs the dta bore guide and a rod? Sure dta makes more money charging twice as much for a bore guide haha but I can't see how a bore snake could hurt a barrel more than a rod and jag. It's soft cloth and brass wire. Like couldn't be easier. I use them exclusively on my ar's and never had any negative impact as far as I know. Plus they are incredibly more convenient. So anyways what do y'all use?

The operator maintenance kit that DTA sells comes with two bore snakes so I would guess those are ok to use.
Level the rifle, level the brake, tighten it down. Then put a mark on the brake and a mark on the barrel so you can easily time them up later.
Anyone still patiently waiting for their rifle? I called today and was told they pulled my order and in the process of filling it now. ETA Approx 3 weeks. When I heard that I got about as excited as a 12 year old girl at a Justin Bieber concert.
I just in the last week got my Barrels from EuroOptic, now I just need to get the chasis back from the cerakote guy and I will be good to go (The Chasis came from EuroOptic about a month before the barrels did, I ordered in march I think).
I am awaiting goods from Feb 12th. I called last week and was told that all Feb orders will be filled within 3 weeks. This includes ammo. You guys that ordered in June should just forget your order and someday you will have a present on your doorstep. It's good to see companies making ammo again.
I ordered mine back in April and got the 3 week quote as well yesterday. I even got my serial number from the sales dpt so I can start the registration process on base! So far the customer service has gone above and beyond. Madison and Ryan rock!
Those still thinking about ordering DTA rifles and don't want a 7-9 month wait, may want to call DTA Dealers. I know of a dealer that placed a large order at SHOT and received SRS rifles a few weeks ago. He had a few come in that were not spoken for yet, but they went pretty fast. He still has rifles on order from SHOT that are not spoken for.

Sweet mine is going to be all black and a covert as well. Then a S&B 5-25. Do you know what kind of Bipod you are going to go with? I'm leaning towards Harris but I hear okay things about Atlas too... So torn in between the two.

Aww man... I already ordered the adapter for the Harris bi pod too... I don't want to try to change anything to my order for any chance of delaying it.... So the Atlas doesn't require an adapter it goes direct on the SRS A-1 rail? I just spent 300 dollars on some American Rifle rings too.... I wish guns grew on trees...
Had a lot of Harris bipods...they are all gone
I only use one other bipod now and there is a reason they call it an "Atlas"

Like many things for my srs I got mine from eurooptic. 219 for it with rail mount. 279 with the lever rail mount. I went with the lever one.
Primal Rights also has them listed for cheaper than your Amazon quote.

noted thanks most likely going to hit up eurooptic then since i got rings on order from them might as well call them monday to add the bipod but that's only if i call dta to cancel the attachment and maybe exchange it for another magazine. Is another magazine worth it?

I think I saw myself in one of your videos getting worked over in the crazy steel stage at a PC Match. The video was great.
These SRS rifles are amazing. I look forward to attending a few matches this fall/winter, now that I have completed (well nearly completed) my home remodel project.
Give me a holler if you ever need someone to go out shooting with.

Yes Rob, that was you. I go shooting every chance I get, though its turned into more of an exercise regimen. I hike up the mountains behind the house a couple times a week with the SRS in tow, crack off a few well placed rounds, check the coldbore and such, then come down. Great exercise for both body and rifle. We'll have to get together and shoot some more.
Anyone have a source for an A1 monopod kit? My Green Covert came without one during their bad batch issues...thanks
I believe it was asked before, but I didn't see an answer; Is there a certain serial number where the Gen 1s were able to be converted to Gen 2 and were tapped for the monopod? I don't have mine with me to look at the chamber.

I just called DTA directly and ordered one from them, it was very easy and quick.
Mine is somewhere around DTA 001370 and it was drilled and tapped for the monopod. I have no idea on the barrel extension conversion....I'm happy with the gen 1 pin. I've had the rifle for over 3 years now with a lot of barrel changes and have never damaged the pin. I did add the monopod about a year ago and it was simple and worth the cost.
