I have noticed this problem with my 223 WSSM and 6.5 PRC barrels, never had this happen with my 300 WM or 338 LM barrels. I believe most of the problem is the front or neck of the shorter cases get tipped farther to the side when being pulled out through the barrel extension than the longer cases. This allows the ejector plunger spring to extend farther and lose the ability to "flip" the case hard enough to get it out of the rifle properly. I really, really love my SRS! I really like the two short case rounds I have barrels for too, but the DT doesn't run them near as well as the longer case rounds. Magazines are fussy too with these fat short rounds that are a long way from the chamber when leaving the Magazine lips.

Do you have any suggestions or ideas that you know of to make these run better? Available magazines? The 223 WSSM is not very practical in the DT although it is a fun round to shoot, but the 6.5 PRC is awfully nice when it runs semi reliably. I want to get it to run them better. What is the shortest round that you know of working well in the SRS? Who is making the SRS run these reliably?

The DT Magazines work wonderfully with the 338 LM's loaded long with 300 grain Bergers. I love the DT's long 4" cartridge length capability, I load mine at 3.9375" COAL and they run fine.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

I have modified my own mags and bolt stops for both cartridges. They do work, but not to a comfortable tactical or hunting level. Most of the issues are ejection.

I also kind of like how they chose the mount option for the elite iron bipod to go off of the top Picatinny rail rather than the bottom one. Mine goes off of the bottom one, but I doubt it makes enough difference for it to be worthwhile for me to change, the arrangement that I have

So they announced 6.5prc and 30-06 as new conversion kits at Shot, has anyone seen/heard what the barrel lengths will be offered in 30-06? I also heard that they will be making new 30-06 specific mags but haven’t been able to find anything to back that up. I know I’m probably in the minority but I’m super excited to get a 30-06 barrel. I was going to go custom to get it done but I’ll probably just buy factory considering I’ve have had great luck with the factory LW barrels.

It is not a joke. It was announced at shot show. They claim European customers want them or something like that.

FOr that cartridge we know that barrel lengths are going to be 26 inches. Maybe 24 but I doubt it would be anything other than those.

And yes, they are going to release magazine for it if I recall correctly

I understand where you’re coming from, it’s sound logic. And, like I said, I’m sure I’m in a minority that actually wants a 30-06 barrel. But, I’ve always been a huge fan of the the classic -06, because of its history and what it can do. I’ve had quite a few 300wm over the years and it’s very capable but that belt gets annoying after 5-6 reloads and with modern powders loaded to modern pressures you can get the 30-06 to 90% of the 300wm with double the barrel life and 10grs less powder.

And one could argue, why buy a 300wm barrel when 338Lap/ 300 Norma barrels are available? And the 338 case is what the original system was designed around.

I’m on the simple side I guess, I only want 3 barrels- 223, 30-06, and 338 Lapua. Great Lapua brass available for all 3, covers everything from mice to grizzly and fun plinking in the meantime.

In Aus the 338lap is horrendously expensive....even when reloading.

The 300wm is the opposite....only marginaly dearer than 308win for packet ammo and reloading.

I shoot both 300wm and 338lap
Out to 2000yds for shooting targets and steel plates ,balistically the 300wm is pretty much equal to the 338l at a fraction of the cost.

Don't get me wrong,I think 30 06 is a great round......just as I still like and enjoy 8x57 mauser!!

I have customers waiting for the 30-06 Kits. It’s not a caliber I would have gone with, but DT sees a European demand for the caliber.

6.5 PRC and 30-06 were announced at SHOT. I believe dealers should be seeing them very soon. From what I recall, both are 26” and both use caliber specific magazines.

I've shot lots of .308, 6.5 Creed, 6 Creed, 6x47, 6.5x47, and .260 rem. I don't recall ever experiencing feeding issues with those.

7 WSM was hit and miss. 6.5 PRC was problematic as well, unless you were running a modified short action magazine.

Over the years, I've learned that in the SRS the tip of the projectile needs to make it into the chamber before the magazine releases the cartridge. If the mag releases the cartridge, before the projectile has started into the chamber, feeding issues most certainly will be apparent.

We received one of the new DT WLVRN rifles last week. My employee and I stripped it down today. The rifle now has three tension bolts clamping the receiver to the barrel over a larger surface area. I think this feature will assist the rifle in being more accurate. The WLVRN is noticeable lighter than the MDRX. The charging handle runs smoother. I have yet to shoot one, but the changes look promising.

As Dogtown said, I am on BLM, which in this case stands for bureau of land management, public lands accessible to all for any legal activities. I am just west of Salt Lake and the city in Utah. I can be out here all day and just see an occasional dirt biker or pedal gravel biker, and I can shoot as far as I can shoot. It almost makes me feel as though I am wealthy and own 1,000,000 acres.

The BLM aspect of the Western states (west of the Rocky Mountains) is something most people outside of the USA will not understand. There is SO much of it and it's pretty accessible year round, a little less if it's closer to a metro area. Restrictions vary as well - some don't allow target shooting or do, but no night shooting. The most restricted areas are the most heavily trafficked, so it's best to find a spot that's more remote if you want to do it all.

The unfortunate downside is there are a LOT of knucklehead shooters out there who ruin it for everyone else by making a big mess and/or being really unsafe out there. I've had favorite BLM spots get shutdown for shooting because of all of the shotgunned washing machines and refrigerators littered throughout the area. Others will close during fire season because people unintentionally start fires. But there's also a bit of a Wild West aspect to it, so you also need to be careful of other shooters not only being unsafe, but also being intentionally dangerous. I've had rounds wiz by me in smaller, busier spots (don't do that anymore) and in about twenty five years I've been intentionally shot at once, and had a couple of tense encounters with freaky militia types.

This is my first time shooting my new A2 chassis, which honestly I should’ve never got. I should’ve kept my A1 chassis that worked.

Not only does this one have an irregularity in the skins that prevents me from easily installing a sawtooth rifles rail on it, I tried to insert, my E – S, tactical 338 barrel in this chassis, and it simply will not fit. The chassis is probably about 1000th of an inch too small to accept this barrel.

Desert Tech quality control and tolerance stacking is a giant fucking pain in the ass and they really need to get their act together. Thankfully I got my rifle from PR driver so I am sure he will make it right but this simply should not happen with a $3800 chassis. This is complete bullshit.

You are right about the dipshits, and the Appalachian Americans, who leave all their trash behind. And by the way, I grew up in Appalachia, so I am well familiar with it.

Even my special spot out here, which is quite remote, occasionally gets littered with all sorts of bullshit that hillbillies leave behind. I occasionally have to load up my van with all sorts of trash, including bucket seats, pulled out of vehicles and shot to hell, folding tables and chairs shot to hell, Christmas decorations, stuffed animals, cans bottles, and every manner of nonsense.

But you know, hillbillies are going to hillbilly. I come from a long line of hillbillies, so I get it but come on have some respect guys.

On a positive note, this Schmidt and Bender 6–36 scope is a winner. I find it much easier to get behind and have a full site picture than the tangent Theta, which seemed to be more particular in terms of tunneling or eye box or something that I can’t quite pinpoint, but whenever I get behind the S&B, the view is right there and the tangent always seemed to require some micro adjustments of the cheek weld. I also like the extra power and the DTii+ turrets are awesome. In fact, the whole scope is awesome especially for the money. I never did use the tool less on the tangent, so that is immaterial to me. The clicks were superior, but I like the S&B MTC feature, and all in all, it is more of an aesthetic thing with clicks than a practical one for me.

I got a break it to you guys. The tangent glass is better, especially as regards Mirage, even at 25 power for apples to apples comparison, and the edges of the target and very subtle features on the target at 1000 yards are sharper and easier to bring into focus with the tangent

Don't be. As much as DT QC has been a problem, having a custom barrel that doesn't fit is an outlier. If you're concerned about it, then send in the chassis to the barrel maker to have them confirm it fits.

With the A2‘s, I’m being told, it is not an outlier phenomenon at all. The tolerance is now very tight in the chassis and if you are even 0.001 inches over 1.250 which is the exact situation I am in, it may not fit in an A2. The A1 was much more forgiving. I am being told by a reputable dealer.

Well, of it makes you feel any better, I bought your a1 and I really like it. .... Because I didn't want something new. I fit a bunch of barrels for dt chassis. There's some differences. And the new bolts vs old bolts. Headspace is sipe close. Bolt nose clearance I've seen some variations. And I've seen some chassis that require a smaller barrel diameter to fit. But regardless, I really like the dt system. I'll buy an hti one of these days

Having been down this road where 3 of 4 factory conversion kits fit, I'd send the barrel and extension back to have turned down. If the chassis is opened up it could cause a major vertical stringing.
That's what happened with my HTI. Desert Tech made it right with a new chassis though which is awesome.

I totally see how DT tightening up on the barrel channel spec with the current generation rifles can be an issue for some with existing custom conversions. To be fair to DT regarding barrels not fitting in the SRS A2, their barrel print has always showed the spec on the SRS barrel print to be 1.250”. Now previous generation SRS rifles have allowed for barrels that were a couple thousandths over. My A1 has no problem taking a barrel that is 1.252”. We’ve found that the A2/M2 rifles seem to have the tolerance tightened up in the barrel channel where if a barrel is over 1.250” it may not go into the SRS barrel channel.

It’s certainly frustrating if you own barrels or have barrel blanks that are just a thou or two oversized out of spec. We had a batch of barrels come in that were a couple thou oversized and we had to get the barrels turned down to fit in SRS A2 Chassis.

The easiest solution is to have a smith turn down the barrel. If it’s oversized by just a thou or two, the gunsmith simply polishing up the barrel shank can take that amount off of the barrel.

I have yet to come across a DT barrel extension that was oversized. They all seem to be will below that 1.250”.

I works really well for F Class shooting. I cut my groups in half with this setup and the bag.
It is quickly removable with one 1/4-20 screw in the bottom of the grip. The rear end clips on to the monopod. I inserted an aluminum plate inside the grip for the screw to securely thread into. It is very solid and stable.

That is the perfect design, imo. Seems way better thought out than the ABR.
