This may have been posed before but here goes. If it has, you can just ignore my question.

I've got some Leupolds, new in 2010-1015, VXII, VXIII, w/ upgraded reticles, mostly for varmint or target. Does anyone know of a non-biased (not produced by an Optic mfr or retailer) which gives relative comparisons between such vs the latest & greatest?

TIA

FWIW - you're probably not going to get much more than anecdotal testimony. While glass is important, the coatings are what really important. That is both proprietary and a moving target. So Loopy's circa 2010 coatings vs 2020 may be different, as well as any comparison manufacturer's then vs now. Samey / same with the internals.

Secondly, resolution and color are (beyond a reasonable standard) subjective.

What specifically is it that you want to know?

Waiting for a new HB .308 to arrive & was wondering if there might be a compelling reason to go to a new scope too. I have 3 Leupolds on the shelf looking for a new home as it were.
I know something of the importance of coatings but am certainly not a scientific person I don't think much can be done w/ reticles & I sort of thought coatings topped out around 16-7; that was the last time I saw any discernable difference but truthfully I was comparing a new, at-that-time Leupold to ones I owned.

Basically I'm cheap; I'd spend the money but need to see a real benefit. I live in Memphis & there just isn't a lot of unbiased opinion available; the retailers want to sell you what they have on the shelf, in the pipe or what they make the most margin on.. The shooters all tout their choice as 'the best' as you following their lead validates their 'wise choice'.
As this forum is national in nature & covers a host of disciplines, I hoped to get some input from different sources which might push me one way or the other. Currently, I'm leaning towards putting one of my 'old' ones to work again.
I probably should have mentioned I'm thinking a max, MAX of about 7-800yds and strictly target work.
Really want to do some longer range target shooting & see what I can get up to for distance. If this goes well I have my eye out for a .300 although I;m tempted to jump to a .338

We'll see
Any way, any thoughts, as well as links on the subject appreciated

the easy answer...

if one of your "spare" leupold scopes will do the job you want it to, nobody elses opinion on what may or may not be better matters...

what do you need the scope on your new rifle to do? will one you have do that? if not, get one that will....

I have a late 90's version of the 6.5-20 x 50 vari-x iii...... it still works just fine - the only reason it doesnt get used so much now is it doesnt have turrets for on the fly adjustments so no go for my comp rifles, its just fine and dandy on a hunting rifle though....

About your scope dilemma - try mounting what you already own and evaluating how it/they perform. If they do the job well enough, you're golden. If not, make note of the characteristics you think are deficient and do research and ask questions to determine which scopes are known to deal with those issues well.
