What do you guys think of my 1 of a kind black and gold edition Mausingfield?

For the record ARC did not recommend TiN coating the extractor. I bought a spare with my action and had it coated.

Also had the Gold Edition Triggertech!

Super pumped on this build!!!!

That’s interesting. I have a customer that’s sending me a Mausingfield extractor to Cerakote to get the TiNi look. Mixing up a custom color didn’t take too long and it’s a pretty good match.

Don't know about an extractor in a bolt gun, but I have a high end 1911 with a tin barrel and after about 3000 rounds it still looks new. Just wipes clean after a range session.

I was so excited to bolt it all together last night that I wasnt even paying attetation. It wasn't noticeablely worse than my 700's, mack bros SS evo, or my howa action. I'll dry fire tonight and report back!

Weird, my M5 has nothing like that.

My M5 is one of my favorite actions, its got an insanely light bolt lift and close. I do use a BnA trigger that is timed to the action, perhaps that's the difference...

Yea seems like most people have had good results with theirs...I'm eyeing an m7 build but my experience with arcs CS with my m5 is leaving me not super stoked at taking the plunge again if I get another lemon.

Love the idea of it tho

What's the reason for the bore rider throat? Which bullet are you planning to shoot?

Do you find a normal bullet hits the lands at a very short COAL.

Could have just thrown it in the oven. The golden straw colors are pretty low on the temper spectrum, not likely to hurt much. You can see they temper them harder than that on the underside on a lot of the ARC extractors I've had (brown going into purple).

If it's what I think it is, it's to remove land material so the bullets and burning powder don't have to. Tried it out on some 6mm's and saw no real 'as-advertised' gain. Just took more powder to get the same MV.

Dave @ PTG says the Bore Rider Throat will give you an additional 80-140 FPS. With the bore rider throat,Improved case, and 94-95 grains of retumbo i am hoping to stay supersonic to 2250-2300

definitely not free, but I wonder if the erosion you may be eluding too is from the BRT or pushing the limits of a magnum caliber to achieve the highest velocity. STAY TUNED TO THIS THREAD TO FIND OUT!

Xylo is a chassis not an action.

I chose the Mausingfield for this build because it is a magnum that I plan to run on the edge and everyone say these actions are bullet proof. Additionally I wanted to Mauser style extractor.

I have an Archimedes on deposit right now for a 6.5 creed build I am doing. i like the innovation of the levered bolt for primary extraction.

Pretty sure those Lugers would have a form of case hardening which is a type of surface treatment, steel will colour under heat but without case hardening it’s not at all durable.

As for the bolt part, I mistaking thought the entire bolt was done in gold and not just the extractor. Agreed that the extractor doesn’t rub much.

Here is the first 4 shots for fire forming today. 87 grains of retumbo and a 250 Berger OTM.

This is a 5 round group. I only fire 25 today over a 3 hour session to keep the temps down. Rounds 21-25!

For goodness’ sake, people, do not try to temper your steel rifle parts to get them to change color. Trust me, it’s not worth the safety risk.

Made it back to the range on Sunday for more fire-forming.

So far the rifle is showing real promise. The group attached was 4 shot .4 Moa and 5 Shot .60 Moa group, with an SD of 10.3. I think thats pretty awesome consider how much the case is moving while I'm fire forming.

We also saw a bald eagle in the trees on the way to the range. They are starting to become common for me here in SoCal, they are awesome creatures.

I'll bring my spotter and phone scope next time for a better photo!

wow, that's awesome, I've seen a bald eagle once on the way to the range, made for a great day. I loaded up about 20 more rounds of the 198 PVA solids. Will be processing some brass these rainy days.

Been a minute since I updated this thread and since the rifle has been to the range.

This is my first wildcat and what an adventure it has been.

Around the time of my last post I had sent twice fired brass and reamer prints to Whidden to have dies made and it turned out there was an issue. At the time I wasn't sure if LRI had made a mistake, if the reamer was bad, or if the design of the reamer was bad. The gun spent some time back at LRI where Chad and Eric decided to make a minor change to the chambering and we switch from Lapua to Peterson Brass and viola Whidden gave me the thumbs up to have dies made once I sent them the new brass.

I also had bought a Leupold Mark 5 in early December (previously using the M5 off my 6.5) preparing for ramping this project back up and when i got it the reticle was shifted to the right. I sent that back to Leupold and had to wait 2 months for them to make more 7-35's because they didnt have a single one in stock. This sounds sucky, but Leupold gave me smoking deal on a pair of Bino's for my troubles.

I share all of this for those of you guys new to custom projects, sometime they don't go as planned but when you buy good stuff and you do business with awesome companies things end up working out and sometimes you end up ahead of the game.

I will on Monday. I've got to go fire form some brass this weekend so I will get some pics and post them.

I should have my sizing die by valentines day and I will start with a satterlee test. I am hoping to be able to get to 96 grains of retumbo at 3000 fps! We shall see

Finally got my Whidden custom die yesterday so I worked up a Satterlee test to find pressure.

I loaded in 3/10th increments from 89.3 to 96.5. My Lab Radar didn't pick up two rounds but I got a velocity of 2931 @ 96.5 of Retumbo with a Berger 300 OTM. The last few rounds were crunchy when I seated them, however by the time they got to the range they had enough space for me to hear powder when I shook them.

No signs of pressure even at 96.5 so I am going to try a drop tube and see what else I can squeak out of it.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS IS AN IMPROVED .338 NORMA NOT A STANDARD SAAMI NORMA. So don't duplicate my data in your loads.

Got my overall charge weight test completed

Saturday I went out and tested 95.1-96 grains and the rifle was super violent, shook the action screws loose and didn't print any decent groups.
Sunday I tested 94.1-95 and got a 1/2" group with an SD of 4.01 and a ES 10.07

I will go out next weekend and fire form another 100 pieces of brass and the do a seating depth test. All goes as planned I should have my load figured out the 23rd.
