My wife has a great nephew thrice removed; he was 28 years old when he asked me this and HE WAS SERIOUS--"I'm playing a Vietnam War 'RPG' and have to choose a side; should I be the Germans, Japanese, or the English? Who won that war?" This, coming from a guy discharged prematurely from the US Navy (honorably or not, I dunno).
The second example is just as sad. VERY old family friends wanted my wife to teach their two granddaughters how to bake cookies (as an Xmas tradition). Here's the conversation I remember:
my wife: first, cut 1/4 stick of butter and grease that cookie sheet
20-year old: how much is a quarter stick?
her 18-year old sister: lemme get my phone, it'll tell me
their grandmother: WHAT!?
my wife: whaddya mean, "how much is a quarter stick?"
18-yr old: just what she said, doesn't the question make sense to you?
20-yr old: Yeah. I'll repeat it slowly--how much is a quarter stick?
my wife: you mean you don't know what a quarter is?
