I have noticed several threads recently where someone talks about a load for a 175 grain SMK. What are you talking about?? Sierra makes a 175 grain Match King in 7mm and .30 caliber. I have no idea how many different 7mm cartridges there are in common use. There are even more variations on the .30 caliber (.308 dia. bullet). The 308 Winchester is not near as popular as some people think. So when you talk about or ask about a load please be specific about what cartridge and chambering you are talking about.

I would suspect that well over half of the members of this board have a long range 308. I would suspect almost all of those guys use the 175 SMK (the 308 version) for at least one of their loads for their 308.

I would suspect less that 10 percent of board members run a 7mm 175 SMK.

I think it is safe to say that unless someone mentions a different caliber specifically, they mean the 308 SMK...

I agree that 175SMK (and 168 and 155, for that matter) almost always means .308 (and usually .308 Winchester) - on SH at least. In the context of load data, you're nuts to rely on someone's data off a message board that does not even mention the cartridge. Common sense applies here.

+1 +1

308 is very popular. It's probably the most common starter round in my opinion.

While I agree that there are a lot of 308 Winchesters out there "common sense" would suggest that when you are talking about precision rifles you also use some precision in your language.

I agree with the man's intent. Why assume anything because half of the members shoot a 308?

Along those lines, I don't have a lot of respect for 308, mine is definitely a safe queen. BB

Yeh, the 308 is practically obsolete. I don't even know why manufacturers still chamber for it and supply ammo. I guess just to keep us old fogies happy. And never mind it's one of the most popular cartridges loaded.

Because it's a great round for what most people use it for.

And it's an "American" round, it's got long military history, and long hunting history. The 308 will be around for a very long time.
