Optics seem to be the hardest decision for me. This will be a recreational MR (300yds) to LR (900yds) plinker and varmint rifle.

First thoughts run to a 4x16 size optic but damn if the prices aren’t putting me off and thinking a 5x25 could work.

Any thoughts on pushing me one way or the other?

exposed turrets ... illuminated

budget ... < $2000 ???

How about providing a budget?

when people make these “recommend” thread and post no budget, I assume money is no object. So here goes.

Schmidt Bender 3-20 ultra short in your preferred reticle
ZComp 4-20; ditto on the reticle
TT 5-25
ZComp 4-27
Hensoldt 3.5-26

if you aren't going to be carrying it around (so weight & bulk are less important) I'd go straight to a 5-25. My take on a 556 DR rifle wears a R2 4.5-27, but there are plenty of excellent choices under 2k - especially if you shop the marketplace here and can be patient. I've no doubt the NF 4-16 would be a great fit, but I'd give up 1x on the low end and a few ounces for the NF 5-25 (if NF is your brand).

Thx for the reply. MRAD and a Christmas tree are my thing. This and the overall look and balance. Don’t see me using up to the max 25?power of though.

I started with a Mk5 3.6-18 and then moved to the R2 4.5-27. I've adopted the mentality that more magnification is never a bad thing. with a 5x, 6x. or greater erector I'm willing to trade 1 or 2 on the low end for 5 or more on the high end. but, everyone gets to make their own decision. just about every offering in the mid/high end FFP market offers MRAD christmas tree - that shouldn't be hard to find.
