Rifle is shooting very well.- Not bothering with the loads, this polygon LW barrel shoots well under 1/2 MOA with any bullet I´ve tried so far ( 155 scenars, 168 amax, 168 SMK, 168 Nosler comp). 208 amax wa a little over 1/2 MOA...

no big deal

The rifle is built like a tank. The Howa action seems to be thicker than a Remington ( Lucas bore guide does nog go through), and in fact it was curious to see a custom rifle based on a Win action the other day at the range.. looked like a toy close to the Howa.

It is not a light rifle but at 11,4 lbs scoped, serves me well both at the range and on some long walks.

The 22" barrel is a bonus for walking around; it is not just that it does not get caught in branches, and rocks, it also balances better in slopy areas.

The manners MCST is in my opinion a good allround stock, handles well even in uncomfortable positions.

The Howa mag. system built by Pete has had no flaws and has worked well in my outings. Ok I am not a soldier or sniper but terrain gets nasty on your equipment with jagged rocks everywhere where the rifles get a couple of hits every time you go out there.

And the old 308 is still a very capable cartridge..

All in all, I am more than happy ... excellent work Pete¡¡

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Gyr, some rifle. Best of luck with it.
Pete can put em together well.

How is the polygon barrel with factory ammo?

Love your pictures, christ we went stalking today in ponchos because of monsoon rain and gale force winds. should have taken an outboard along...a week ago even my Hensoldt binos let in water.

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

GYR, nice county and nicer rifle! Does Pete always mill the HOWA logo off the receiver, or was it a request from you?

I had word from Pete that mine is on its way down under!
Hope to get behind it very soon.

At this rate there will be a section for Roedale Rifles only!

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Hi Craig,
are you getting a zenith scope? , If so you might want to get the little BDC Turrets (like precision hunter) fitted instead of the original ones. I have had them fitted to two scopes, great. They'll get you to around 500m 308.
I think the milling off of the howa logo is a request from howa. Don't want tactical looking rifles with their logo on it.

Gyr, the question with the factory ammo was just because someone mentioned that Polygon barrels produce slightly higher pressure. Not sure if this is true though.

regards
edi

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Re Howa logo... I dont know, I think Pete does it on his own on the SA as he calls them RH40 after having modified them.
My hunting buddy got a LA the same day and it carries the Howa logo.

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Nice country GYR, I will be back !! and I will also visit Eire Edi !! we sweated our asses off on Friday, it was the annual walked up - driven day on the training area. +17° C spring day.
I was soaked in sweat as its heavy going for a beating shooter with dog. My Lab "Nig" perfomed admirably.
Yesterday we had the walked up day around the village, and it pissed down. I shot more than everyone else (as usual) and had the pleasure of dishing out the Schnapps at the after hunt meal.
I'm on a driven hoofed dame hunt on Saturday in the southern Teutoburger Wald. Mouflon-Fallow-Red-Roe and Wild Boar. Now some one will moan, stop hunting and build rifle,, but everyone needs a day off and days off in hunting season are a bonus.

Craig, at long last ( and courier be damned) it looks like it will finaly be with you within days, and you Gry and me can get together one day, pull up a packing box, sit on it and drink beer and bitch about couriers. and Edi is right, those PM turrets are handy on a Zenith.

The removal of the Howa logo was at the request of Howa. They are bound by some small print in a treaty that was signed up after the war some time which states they cannot supply military or LE type firearms outside Japan.
they shit a brick when one of our RH40 RCS's, looking like an AI AW with Howa logo still in place made centre spread in the most popular Jap gun magazine.
Xisco's LA 6.5x55 was already coated and ready to go when we got told to put our own logo on the even so slightly tactical looking rifles, and i didn't want to strip it down.
Craig yours is marked RH40 T.

regards Pete

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yes, you three do need to come down to N.Z for a hunting trip. Just as long as you like Pigs, Reds, Fallow & lots of goats!

Edi, the zenith 1.5-6 is for my T3 battue. I use another 308 with a Kahles MultiZero for longer stuff, and RH40-T will have the legs and energy for a bit more distance. PMII 3-12 Military for that but might need to steep up to 4-16, what do you guys think? Pigs & Reds @ 500-600M

I have added some of my photos to get you all thinking!

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Edi, the top of the south island - Nelson. If you’re into any outdoor stuff this is the place to come to. Looks like you have some nice rolling country to hunt.

Pete, freight is arriving in Auckland today, in fact in 45 minutes!
grin.gif

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Damn, now I do want to go ¡¡¡¡

scope,.. PMII 3x12 should be enough for 500 m, and you save some weight. 4-16 x 50 serves me well to further than I can shoot. And you can think about the 4-16 x 42 which weighs just about the same as the 3-12 x 50 ( with parallax). 50 obj. if you hunt at night maybe.

Pete, freight is arriving in Auckland today, in fact in 45 minutes!

let me know that it got there ok Craig..

gry.. on my way.. you come here to hunt..i'm holding your .300RUM hostage till you do !!

regards Pete

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Hi Pete

Arrived in Auckland yesterday (Friday) with all the handling fees and freight to Nelson, its going to cost me another $200 NZD. I will have it in my hands by mid next week. Total freight cost is around $1100 NZD!! (550 Euro) and exactly two months to freight this rifle from Germany to New Zealand! OverNite Couriers need to sort there shit out, WANKERS!!

I will let you know as soon as I fondle it! (Yes, the rifle)

GYR, thinking about a 4-16x50 now! (P4F)

Thanks

Craig

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yes Craig, but with one airline after another handling rifles and guns as if they where radioactive its not easy, and it costs about 3/4 that to get a rifle from UK to mainland EU, so when one considers the extra distance to NZ,, well it sort of tally's up.
Ask Gyr, same thing.
It seems that certain destinations are problematic, whilst others are a piece of cake, its easier to get a rifle to Russia that to NZ. US is straight forward too,.
I think the problem is that the couriers come out with a price list, quote the lowest possble price they think they can do the job for to make sure they get the contract, and then spend ages trying to get the job done to that budget. where are if they left a little room for manouver in the pricing, it might all happen quicker.
Mainthing is that it gets there safe and legal. anyone can bung a rifle in the post, and chances are it would get there, but its when it doesnt that the shit hits the fan.

anyhow.. 4-16x50PMII P4LF. excellent scope.

regards Pete

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Kokako,

What are you planning to do with your Roedale? I'm thinking of locking a NZ hunt next year and I'm looking for some feedback on places and prices? Mainly after Tahr, deer would be a bonus.

I see the AB touched up the French on the weekend!

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Rath, there is more than enough public/DOC land to hunt without the need to pay someone. If time is a problem you might want to try a guided hunt, have a look at some of the NZ based hunting mags for some contacts. I hope to get the Roedale onto some pigs and reds ASAP.

As for the footy, it’s all part of the master plan! Including a kiwi coaching the Wallabies – That seems to be working well……………..

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Cheers for the info Kokako, I'll have a look around the mags and the net.

I reckon Deans is doing a great job, probably just does not have the quality of cattle he's used to. That being said the ave age of the Wallabies is 24 so they will only get better

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yes couriers are a PITA.- ....gonna have to organize a specialiezed EU carrier....

4-16 x 50 PMII is a great scope. Not light but I think it is perfect for a hunting rifle. The x42 saves around 100 grams.

p4 fine, great reticle.

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

GYR,

The 4-16x50 looks like the right setup for me, and it just looks awesome on your rifle. What height rings has Pete supplied with your scope, I already have some Badger rings .330" (8.382mm)high.

Pete, can you remember the ring height? More *uck ups with the freight at this end, I will PM you the details so you can have another laugh!!

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

More courier company muck-up’s! It departed Auckland for here on Wednesday night, Arrived in Wellington on Thursday and was due to be in here on Friday morning (Today) I phone the company to see if they had it and the reply was “Yep we have it but it’s not unloaded yet” I went to pick it up on my way home from work and……………

It’s not there at all, it’s back in Auckland.
mad.gif

The very intelligent people at Mainfreight Wellington sent it back to Auckland………..
blush.gif

Should be back down this end of the country on Saturday, and pick it up on Monday!!

Have you got an up to date price for the PMII 4-16x50 LP P4f CW???????

Next time I will come to Germany!

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yep, unpacked and well fondled. Outstanding workmanship Pete, you are a true craftsman.

Balls out at work this week so I only managed to mount the scope tonight. Hope to get behind it this weekend.

What’s the story with the break? And you might want to give the courier company a heads –up regarding the damaged storm case, but I will let you know how I get on at this end first.

Cheers

Craig

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yes the spare mag and all the other goodies are there (I think?) It would have been in the same pocket as the mag aye?
I had two looks through the AIM drag bag looking for it, lots of places to hide it in there!!

I will email you tonight with a possible solution.

Craig

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

Yep, everything is awesome! Loved the Aim50 drag bag. Did you get my email RE: Muzzle brakes?

Does it sound like a positive outcome for all?

Cheers

Craig

Re: ROEDALE RH40 REVISITED

It's more for "hand on cock" factor than recoil reduction! I want it to feel like a BSA air rifle. LOL

Just hurry up and send it before I add more things to the order!

If you are ever down this way we need to go for a hunt, I might even have a rifle for you to use.

Cheers

Craig
