Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

Haven't been on the forum in a few days.

Regarding your hand guard, if it is far off center and you shoot off a bi-pod, it might cause some problems as the rifle recoils but I'm not sure. My Gen 1 hand guard was off also. I just loosened up the allen bolts holding it on at the receiver and put wooden wedges between the barrel and hand guard where the barrel exits the hand guard. I moved them until the barrel was centered in the hand guard and then tightened the bolts. It stayed centered after that.

I had my bolt body and bolt handle Micro-Slicked (black) by Zephyr Defense to get rid of the "zipper" sound. I think they have a web site (I had mine done through the Ruger Precision Rifle page on Face Book, good info there). Micro-Slick is made by Cerakote and it is sprayed on and heat cured. I did both the bolt & handle so the color would match. It was in the $45 - $50 range including shipping. Picture attached.

I shot the Hornady 129 grain Interlock during break-in (I know, everyone says you don't need to break in the barrel but it can't hurt). It shot OK with it. I have shot some of the common factory loads through mine including Hornady 140 gr ELDM, Winchester 140 gr Match and Federal American Eagle 140 gr OTM. All of them shot very well at 100 & 200 yards but I have only taken the Hornady to distances past 200 yards and it has shot well. I have all the stuff to start reloading and will start developing a load soon.

If you want to try different ballistic apps for your phone, I have tried a few free ones and then finally paid for Strelok + (there are 3 versions, Free, + and Pro). I am happy with it.

I know this reply is a little late but hope it helps.

That bolt looks sweet, I'm looking for an at home solution though. I'll try flitz on the bolt/ receiver, thanks for the rec on strelok, I just plugged in some factory numbers on jbm's calculator... Saturday seems like an eternity away.

I don't have an RPR, but have had great results with the 123gr Scenars, getting ~3050fps & very low SDs with RE17, from a 23" barrel.
If you plug those numbers into a ballistic App, you may be surprised by how little wind drift it has, compared to the more 'normal' 140s.

I ran the numbers a while back for curiosity. When you push the lighter rounds into the 3000-3100 range, the wind drift is VERY comparable to the 140 class projectiles moving in the 2700-2800 range.

6mm Creedmoor RPR. 3-shot group - 105gr berger with 41.8 H4350 and CCI BR-2. Factory hornady 108gr eld shot 0.69" 5-shot group. Surprising accuracy. Just 30 rounds through so far.

What was the distance on those targets?

100 yards off a sinclair light front rest and a protektor rear bag. My local range only opens the 200 yard lanes once a month on the weekends so I haven't had a chance to try that yet. The Sacramento 1000 yard range is about a 2.5 hour drive so I'll have to try that eventually.

Anyone have experience with the pre fit aftermarket barrels? I haven't even shot my RPR but it's in 308 and I'm way heavy on the 30 calibers right now. Looking at the LRI 6.5 barrel cut for amax/eld My model 12 lrp has kind of lost its luster to me but I'm still loving the 6.5 not to mention I'm setup reloading wise for the round.

Anybody shooting PMags: This got lost in the departure of the Hide from Scout. Just for grins, I had designed a single shot follower that I designed after seeing other guys making them out of PVC. I wanted to see if I could offer shooters a cheap and reliable option for single shot function that was maybe a little more reliable. It fits on top of the existing follower - you have to pull the floorplate off the mag (I made a tool to speed that up as well),place this follower on top of the existing unit, and reassemble it. The mag is now dedicated to single shot in bolt guns, and I suspect in AR platforms as well, though I'm still testing that functionality - bolt lockback, load single, release bolt to load, fire, repeat. I made the prototypes on a high end 3D program using regular PLA, and two Hide members have put a combined 500 or so rounds down their RPRs with no issues. Since PRS season is upon us, I'm ready to make them available immediately for the 7.62 PMAGs only - AI mags don't need it. The idea is an inexpensive, reliable single shot option short of buying a Bobsled. A .223 mag version is almost complete and should be prototyped and tested by the end of the week. SO: Here's a pic of the kit below; two followers, Mag tool, carrier rings, $12 shipped through PayPal. I need a couple days to set up a separate thread in the Post Exchange/Accessories Forum. I'm also working on a follower for PMAGs to allow semi-auto use with the ability to toss in a single round to finish a string of fire when your mag runs dry and you don't want to break position to change mags. FWIW, this isn't any attempt to get rich on my part, just seeing fi I can make some items that I am seeing a possible need for.

Proof has prefit barrels

Where do you go shoot Lefty? What state are you in?
I would love to spend a day shooting with you, I might learn something!

I'm in upstate NY. I go to Forbes Rifle and Pistol Club which is in Colonie NY. It's about 20 minutes from me. Bench goes out to 200, 300 is every Tuesday, 600 every Thursday, and 1000 is once a month. Where are you Griz?

That would be a LONG trip to the range then.. I'm in Manor, a little town in Texas, near Austin. Our local gun club goes to 200, have to drive about 55 minutes to get to the only 1,000 yard range in the area, near Liberty Hill, Texas. Back in the late 70's, I made a trip to upstate NY to install a custom controller I had built for a die kitchen. While there, I got a bit of hunting in on a private reserve near Nunn, a sleepy little place with a couple of B an B;s and a lot of history.. Had a great time. The lake there (Tupper i Think was the name) area is absolutely beautiful!!!

^ Yeah that would be a drive man lol. It's cool you got to see the Tupper Lake area though. There's some gorgeous country in NY. Still I'd love to get out west to the deserts you guys have. Would love to take some shots at a mile. Even if it was just a one time thing. Although I doubt it would remain a one time thing

Kool. I have been thinking of going heavier on my .308 (not an RPR but a printed and trued 700) What's the twist on your barrel? The McMillian says I can go to 190 with a 1:12 twist.

Missed this post. Mine is 1:10 on the 20" .308. The 190 SMK's seemed to be a favorite of those shooting at 1000 that I talked to

Just got my gen 2 baby yesterday, mounted the rail, scope, and qd sling cup. I was using an ms3 magpul sling and the qd cup failed and my rifle fell off my back and slammed the muzzle break on a Larue lt104 mount :.( luckily I didn't have the scope in the mount or it would've been a disaster. I replaced the grip with a Larue APEG, and angled the butt pad to the left. Can't wait to shoot it.

I got a variety of ammo to try but first I'll break it in with the cheapest ammo I got the hornady 129 interlok rounds. I have a feeling those atomic 142 sierra matchkings will group the best, just a hunch.

This past weekend, I shot quite a few boxes of 140 Grain ELD's out of my PVA barreled, RPR. I had velocity swings as high as 200 FPS out of one of the boxes of ammo. I discarded it shortly after. Mind you all of these were from the same lot. Also shot some 147 Grain ELD's. They also has pretty serious ES and SD numbers. I was so irritated, I contacted Hornady to complain. All of the ammo averaged about 3/4MOA with a few groups hovering around, .5-.6. So far, not super impressed with the factory ammo I've tried. I am waiting on a shipment from prime. That will be the next ammo I test. Anyone else out there running a PVA barrel on the RPR? What factory ammo have you found that works well?

I did not want to start a new topic in Gunsmithing and did not find the answer despite several attempts of search inquiries....

Has anyone the head space / chamber protrusion for the RPR at hand? Ideally from the thread shoulder. Don't have a rifle at hand to take apart and measure it myself, so your help is much appreciated!

Cheers

Call LRI, they can tell you.

Started the break in process today, had to cut it short unfortunately but got 25 rounds in and 8 cleanings. Boresighted at about 30ish yards, just had to drop the sight down 20moa and I let if fly. Hit was 3.5 inches to the left. My reticle showed 10 moa so I moved point of impact 10 moa to the right, next shot was dead center about a half inch low, I was satisfied with poi. First five landed in the same hole, mind you this was with a cleaning in between every shot (I know 30ish yards, but still) I then decided to go for a 600 yard shot just for fun, wind was blowing from right to left, first attempt at 600 landed 12 minutes low and 2 minutes left, I held over using the reticle and WHAM impact! Again, same hold, impact! After hitting 10-15 shots at 600, for fun I decided to go back to my 30ish yard target, I put 7 rounds in the middle and 3 on the very first hole, cleaning after every 5 rounds. Rifle recoils like a pussycat, muzzle break isn't very blasty either, loving this rifle so far.

In the picture the left hole is .183" (3 shots) middle hole is .301" (7 shots) top right holes were from my son shooting a marlin 795 .22. I was shooting the 129gr interlock hornady's.

^ Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Long range is great. Having to defeat the weather in order to still shoot accurately is a challenge that is incredibly fun

Took my RPR put today with my new Vortex RAZOR HD 5-20x50 mil/mil and shot these groups
top 10 where factory ammo and the 30 below where my reloads

each square is 1/4 inch with 4 being an inch

Very nice. Looks like you have a tie between the 140 ELD and the Superformance with 43gr. I load SMK's now but back when I was shooting factory ammo the Superformance BTHP did best at 1000 yards. I liked those a lot.

Yeah these were just out of the book reloads using new Hornandy brass and bullets ...... when I move to Texas and get setup ill start a proper load workup, use different bullets etc. this was mostly just to test out my scope anyway ....BTW the Vortex rocks

Looks like it's shooting pretty good for you. Doing load workups for me is the most interesting part of getting a new rifle!
If you are loading for hunting try the Sierra 130gr GameKings. They produce some excellent groups for me out of the 6.5 loads.
Usually tighter than the MatchKings... Go figure...

Yup, still have 30 rounds of it too, I probably will rezero with 140 then go for 1000. I don't have a chrono but judging by my holdover at 600 the 129s are doing 2700fps.
