Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

What is the heaviest bullet you’ve used in your box ammo testing?
At this point, they have all been 55 grain. both in 556 and 223 I ordered some 5.56 - 75 grain Hornady (1 box based on the ratings and price on line.) and some 77 gr. Fiocci matchking hollow point to try. Will probably order some Magtec and/or MK262, if that doesn't work.

the 55 gr is for fighting. the accuracy standard for the rifles that shoot it is 2-3 MOA. remember that. MK262 is specifically designed for the MK12 SAPR you should have better results.

I would say it seems more precise and predictable. I’m sure the lighter pull weight has something to do with it. The stock trigger felt to me like it had extremely fine sand in it; particularly when comparing it to the Timney. I am sure the other triggers out there are just as nice and better in some cases, but I like the Timney

Granted this isn’t a rpr but my scar shot 55 ball 2” or so @ 100. Zeroed it with mk262 at 100 and shot 1/2-3/4 MOA and was hitting a 4” steel swinger at 400 like it was a walk in the park with my 1-6 Razor Gen 2. That and magtech shoots lights out... out of barrels that have business being called “sub-MOA” barrels.

Hack for non-rotation limiting rear sling swivel on RPR stock.

Tied with sling dettached from stock, because the loop is too short to be tied well when attached to the rifle. Once tied I had to remove the adjustable portion of the stock to get it through the loop. All said and done, happy with it so far...no twisting?

A couple of questions if someone can help me out:

Now that the 6 creedmoor has been out for awhile is it as accurate as the 6.5 version of the RPR?

There are hundreds if not thousands of testimonies to the accuracy of the 6.5 version on the net.

Second question: I have narrowed the choice for my next rifle down to an RPR Gen 2 in 6 creed or 6.5 vs the Tikka T3X TAC A1.

The 6 creed version of the RPR can be had for $600 less than the Tikka.

Wondering if the Tikka is that much better.

Thanks

This is an RPR thread, I think the bias is obvious. However, the tikkas are very nice but you won’t get the same bang for buck as you will on the RPR. Tikka is a bit more refined from the factory but with a few tweaks the RPR is equally as refined. One point of interest though, google how much a tikka proprietary magazine costs.

I am aware that this is an RPR thread. That doesn’t mean a person can’t be objective. Plus, someone on SH may own both.

I agree with the bang for the buck assessment. Also, I am aware of the price of CTR mags. $72.50 from Euro Optics.

Thanks for the input.

I can’t speak for the RPR in 6.5. Although I’ve seen incredible groups at both 600 and 1000 from shooting buddies. But I have shot the Tikka and own the RPR In .308, and when all things are considered, I’d choose the RPR. That’s just some dude’s opinion.

For bipod mounting are y’all mounting directly to the provided sling stud that mounts to the MLOK rail or something better. I’m going with Harris but haven’t bought any specific mounts yet. I have the stock rail. Probably not concerned with quick disconnect but not opposed to it. Wondering what’s more stable.....thoughts? What are y’all running?

Atlas on an mlok pic rail section.

Full length ARCA rail. The flat surface is a nice improvement even without the bipod. I might still switch to the flat seekins rail if I change barrels.

Nobody running a Harris?? Stop making me feel like a peasant with your fancy Atlas’ guys. Haha
Lol nothing wrong with a Harris when equipped correctly. PWS makes real cool keymod mount or even noveske made a real cool super low profile stud that worked on keymod and the original “modular” troy rails. It was my favorite of any I used for keymod. Looks like they might still sell it but no body has it in stock. I see nothing wrong with running the provided factory studd either as long as it will grab it.

my Daniel Defense light barrel V5 shot 5 rds of 69gr PPU into 2.75" at 254yds...

Back to one of my original questions: anyone here own the RPR in 6mm creedmoor?

Is there anything wrong with it compared to the 6.5 version?

The reason why I ask is it is being discounted heavily in comparison to the other chamberings.

Thanks

I am running Harris on my 6.5. It works great and is mounted on the swivel stud. Only issue I have with it is it has a tendency to loosen a little.

It might be that sales for it are not what they expected for the caliber. The 6.5 is a tack driver and on back order in many places from what I recall. I really like mine. From what I have read, the 6 is in the same category but there is a lot of people calling the 6.5 the new 308. That has to impact the sales numbers. If they are heavily discounting it and you like it, I wouldn’t let saving money stop me.
I have the 6.5 & 5.56 RPR and they feel nearly identical to shoot. I am sure the 556 will shoot like the 6.5 (obviously at shorter ranges) once I get the ammo sorted out. From my readings that should not be an issue with the six. All I have read says it too is an accurate round out to a pretty good distance. Might be a little more effected by wind. But not sure on that. Try plugging some different rounds into the Hornady ballistic call and see which one is more to your liking and purpose. That might help with your decision. Good luck.

Yea that’s my biggest bitch with the Harris is I was constantly tightening it no matter what mount I used. I used an Allen wrench and got them snug a few times. Still loosened just took longer.

Ended up going with this mount from Badger. I have the Harris on order with a pod loc. Now I can mount directly to the rail. Didn’t want all the extra mess in between to get a secure fit or worry about loosening as others have stated. We’ll see how it goes.

Regarding the 6.5 vs 6mm The popularity of the 6.5 platform is finally making quality factory ammunition both more affordable and available. Not sure how cost per round compares but I would think 6mm is more $ and harder to find.

I wouldn’t hesitate one bit to own a 6creed. They were heavily stocked with the keymod version and they aren’t rolling out Mlok versions until the keymods are about gone. They still plan on offering the newest version in 6CM and it’ll cost the same as the rest of them. Warehouses were pretty much out of 6.5 gen 2 and still had a bunch of 6 gen 2. That’s really the only reason for the big sales on 6CM

6 CM will be hard to beat for the high 6mm BCs but it will be a barrel burner.

That’s a superior mounting option over factory Harris (y)

I have the RPR in 6mm Creedmoor. It is every bit a tack driver as the 6.5 version. I've seen the discounts for the 6mm version and have been very tempted to pick me up another one, because the price is so good. I think someone else nailed it when they said the 6.5 is the new 308. The 6.5 gets a lot more "press" and has been a "production" caliber, longer than the 6mm Creedmoor. So I don't think many people even realize that it exists yet. Heck, I was just in a Walmart the other day and the gun counter clerk was full of himself and telling me all sorts of things about how knowledgeable he was about calibers and hunting. When I asked him if he had 6.5 Creedmoor ammo, he told me he never heard of that caliber before. "rolleyes"

If anyone has been looking at the Caldwell long range target camera, I had mine delivered yesterday, and I have to say it’s pretty cool. I haven’t taken it to the range yet. Just did a test in the yard. You can set it up in less than a minute, and the picture is super clear. You can stream live video, record, take still images, and use it to measure your group size. You can zoom in and out. The camera even has night vision. I’m liking it a lot. Got mine on Amazon for $314

Does it sync to your phone or elaborate on this. That’s pretty slick!

^ It does. The app for it is a free download. Once you have that, you can use it with any apple or android device. Cell, tablet, etc. It comes with both a transmitter and a receiver with a tripod for both. However, the reviews I’ve read say that at 500 and 600 there’s no problem connecting to it just using the transmitter alone. I purchased this for 600, but may use it at 1000 as well

^ Used that target camera out at 600 this morning. Setup and breakdown are really fast and I could clearly see my target. No issues. Was fun to fire and then look at my phone and watch the impact

All,
Got a chance to shoot my 5.56 RPR today with the 77 G bullets. It is like night and day from the 55's. I could actually hit what I shot at. Thanks to everyone again for their advice. (y):)

haha, amazing idn't it?..

anyway, if you don't want to spend for the 77gr all the time, I have a couple guns that shoot 69gr Privi Partisan BTHP like crazy. my nothing special DD V5LW with skinny little barrel will put 5 rounds of it into 2.5" @274yds using a 1-6x scope. crazy.

and I have another gun that doesn't care for them. keep trying different ammo to see what your gun likes..

Just happy that I found something it likes. Guess there really is something to this ballistics stuff... :p
And i'm glad it now shoots like the 6.5 at shorter ranges which is why I bought it.
