Anyone who talks about a minimum wage increase is too late. You could make it $15/hr all you want, but the cost of goods/services would increase before the ink on the law dried. A worker’s paycheck with the new MW wages wouldn’t even be scheduled for direct deposit before they are spending it just on gas, food, and bills. There is zero way to ensure that a MW increase won’t lead to an increase for the rest of the population not working at the MW level.
So if you increase it to $15/hr, will the GS-5 making around $32k get a pay increase to offset their increased burden? How about law enforcement and Firefighters? Most of which get paid dog shit, with many FFs having to work another 1-2 jobs in order to bring home a decent income. Are their salaries going to increase? The small family-owned businesses in towns across America...how are they going to manage to remain staffed and pay the new rate without increasing all of their prices or cutting employees?
It sucks but it’s the reality. It is also straight up bullshit because something definitely has to be done. There’s zero reason a full time MW working American can’t afford to put a roof over its head, go to the hospital when it’s sick, and food on the table in their own home.
