So I took a spare case, loaded a 175gr SMK (no primer or powder of course), seated it to 2.815 (meplat), colored the bullet black with a sharpie, and chambered it slowly. It fed, I extracted it, saw my rifle grooves in the sharpie ink.

Here's the funny thing, OAL to meplat was 2.8135", and 2.234" to o-give "jammed".

Is this normal?

Measuring to the meplat really says noting. My Savage 10PC .308 is 2.243 to the lands. How are you measuring? With a Hornady or Stoney Point?

Re: Savage 10FCP LE .308 Seat Depth Question

So you're eyeballing the measurement to the lands? Marks on the bullet are really not that accurate and hard to measure from. Depending on the neck tension if you jammed the bullet it might have moved a little when you chambered or extracted it.

2.234 is not that far from mine but I would say it's a little tight. Even for a Savage.

I've used both the Hornady and RCBS gages and came up with 2.243 for my chamber.

Re: Savage 10FCP LE .308 Seat Depth Question

Measuring my 12FVSS with the Hornady tool (base to ogive):

175 CC = 2.235
175 SMK = 2.230
155 CC = 2.242
155.5 FB = 2.255
168 AMAX = 2.209

FGMM 175gr (2.225) barely makes it in this chamber. Of course, these measurements are for my chamber, a particular lot of bullets, and don't account for differences in comparator hole dimensions.
