Seekins SP10

Hi,

What’s the main differences between the Seekins SP10 and other similar guns like the “GAP10” and others I see on this forum? I’m new to shooting precision rifles and I picked this one up yesterday on sale for $1800 in 6.5 creedmoor and I guess am wondering if it shouldn’t have been my first choice. It’s currently bare bones and I haven’t chosen an optic yet, got it for hog hunting.

Also I know the Seekins is a gas gun, but I’m not sure if the others talked about on here are or not; is this why they’re more spoken highly of? What’s a “gas gun” exactly, anyway?

Seekins is known for making good stuff.
Find ammo the rifle likes and practice shooting it and it will serve you just fine.

I believe "Gas gun" is normally used to refer to a system that uses gas pressure from a fired cartridge to cycle the action. In the case of the AR pattern rifles you will find most of them being DI (direct impingement). The other main option is gas piston. There are tons of videos and articles on the differences if you use those terms specifically.

If you want to go further down the rabbit hole... Another system you will find with pistol caliber and rimfire calibers in AR pattern rifles will be direct blow back


ETA: there are some people / articles that say the DI guns are not true DI guns because of the way the chamber is used in the BCG (bolt carrier group), but don't get too far down the weeds with this as mostly you will see DI vs piston

Seekins is a great rifle, that would be my lowest entry into a gas gun that I know will shoot. As mentioned above, gas gun refers to it being a semi-automatic because of the fired gases reloading the next round.

You made a good purchase. Especially at that price. GAP and JP AR10s are just a bit more “custom”. The GAP is a “tweaked” SP10...having a custom barrel put on it and a few other adjustments. The JP rifles go through even more QC and tweaks...if you want to call it that.

However, those rifles come with a much larger price tag. And for the MAJORITY of people that extra costs doesn’t equate “better performance”. If you can squeeze ALL of the potential out of your Seekins rifle with proper form, load development, etc I’d be very suprised. Your Seekins should shoot well under MOA

Seekins is highly regarded because Glen puts out some great products. The SP10's are known performers, you should have no trouble finding dozens of examples around here.

GAP uses Seekins stuff, puts on a Bartlein barrel and a few Magpul accessories and calls it their own.

If my memory is correct, seekins uses button rifled blanks. I know they get at least some of their blanks from Rock Creek. Not sure if they're exclusively Rock Creek or not though.

You could get into whether cut or button rifling is better, but if they're made correctly, they both shoot great. Everything else is just QC and labor charges, unless you custom order a super fancy gun from GAP.

Ha I bought it at bass pro shops in Texas, originally I was looking for a PSA just for entry level but couldn’t find one and they had a Seekins and a Savage there; idk why it was on sale for that price, only thing I can think of it was on the rack and the one everyone looks at with a few marks here and there that don’t matter and/or maybe making room for new inventory

I’ve seen the Gen 1 model go for that price. Actually csbelas and bass pro marked all of their gen 1 SP10s down earlier in the summer to make room for the Gen 2

What's the difference, they're in house stock and ceracote options?

Stock. I think the gas block may have been redesigned as well but I’m not certain. Possibly the gas port dimension on the 6.5CM as well. Maybe someone else here can clarify

My brother has the same rifle you do (6.5CM). He was running the basic Hornady 140gr American Gunner to get optic zeroed and just screw around with it. Turned out, that American Gunner shoots unbelievably well through the rifle. As a side note, I have personally observed that same ammunition shoot incredibly well out of a bolt gun too.

Unfortunately, Hornady ammunition of any kind and caliber is no longer attainable at reasonable prices.

Hopefully the shit will calm down in about a year or two and we'll all be able to shoot some

The SP-10 is a pretty remarkable weapon for the price If you can get a 6.5CM below $2200 I'd jump on it, I purchased one about 6 months ago for the soul purpose of doing a Review and Range Report here on Sniper's Hide. It has a couple shortcomings and some issues that I really wish that seekins would address, All of this will be in the report Right now I am currently awaiting a new barrel from Paul Craddock so that I can compare the Rock Creek Barrels that seekins uses to a Custom single point cut Bartlein barrel. You get a whole lot more than just a firearm when you buy from Seekins their customer service is above and beyond just about anybody in this industry and on the same level as Vortex and JP.

As mentioned above mine also did like the cheaper American Gunner 140 ammo.

Hey that’s some pretty good shooting, hope I can put a decent group on paper; I bought the vortex Gen 3 1-10 power and am waiting for it to come in

I have an SP-10 and if you got one for $1,800 then that’s a deal. I think it’s one of the best rifles for the money. If you want something better then it’s GAP and then JP. It shoots lights out. I don’t like the gas block but you can’t have everything.

I think there is a reason that a lot of good shooting companies display their equipment with a Seekins SP-10.

I can’t wait to see the review.

Seekins SP10 is a fantastic rifle. I've got a JP LRP 07 and a Seekins SP10 and I'd say it's a toss up as far as quality and accuracy. The JP is certainly a bit more smooth and refined. But, for about half the price, the Seekins is, as I said, a fantastic rifle. I'm about to order another Seekins rifle.

Well I bought the 1-10 power vortex scope as mentioned, but Optics Planet screwed me against better judgement from you guys on here; I bought it when it said “in stock”, but not long after it switched to “backorder only” and wouldn’t ya know it was actually out of stock.

I instead bought the Vortex Razor Gen ii 4.5-27x56 and some Spuhr mounts with 20 moa; I’m a novice but I’ll post the results next week or so

That's a much better choice for that type of rifle.

To my surprise an SP10 lower fits a KAC sr25 upper. There has been talk that the Seekins were completely proprietary and would not fit anything else. That apparently is not true. Here is my KAC APC upper on my SP10 lower, fits and functions perfect.

Depends if you are worried about doing some crazy break in I guess...

Put five on the zero

Plink some steel if you have a solid zero and decent group

Hundred rounds later it's broken in and you can shoot whatever discipline you prefer

Hahaha I think I’ll take a pass on the miniskirt; I was thinking of what I’ve read somewhere about shooting once, clean the barrel, rinse and repeat x amount of times; I managed to acquire 200 rounds of 300 win mag and 100 rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor so I’ll be pretty busy

Don’t over think it. Get your gun sighted in. Probably take 3-5 shots to get zeroed.

shoot a 5 shot group and make your fine tweaks.

clean it again

shoot another 5 shot group to confirm. And out the gun away

I lucked out and picked up two of those bass pro sp10s and at a completely ridiculous price pre apocalypse that I wont even talk about... both are exceptional shooters one came with a magpul prs stock and one with the new cheaper seekins stock. The newer one also has a timney trigger I think. Cant remember which trigger is in the older one. Both shoot better than me, both will ring steel all day at a grand. I've owned more expensive gas guns but I dont really know if they were better built than either of these two. I also own a couple of other seekins ar's in 5.56 and they are just as well built. Around the same time the cabelas around me was going out of business and I picked up a seekins billet ar15 lower for around a $100 also...God I miss that place.

I just shoot them. I clean a new barrel to get any residues out, then go zero it and shoot. I have not yet found a gun that won’t shoot this way.

They say don't knock it until you try it... I can't talk myself into those heels either though

There are plenty of high level shooters that will tell you barrel break in is a waste of time, and some barrel manufacturers that will tell you that they give instructions on how to break in a barrel because they are tired of having the conversation about it from someone who was told that this is the magical way... If you want to look at this from a warranty aspect you should call seekins and do whatever the person on the other end tells you because...Ultimately it's seekins that'll be taking care of you if you win the lottery and get a crap barrel. Statistically it will happen to someone... But other than that I wouldn't believe what I hear or read too much or your barrel break in will turn into a mini game of truth or dare
