This weekend I got to play with my short-range rifle that was just completed. Maybe not everyone's "thing" but it serves my purpose.

Surgeon 591 action
Jewell trigger
Bartlein 20" 1:13 barrel
7.62x39 chamber (308 version)
AICS 1.5 stock
USO SN3 3.2-17x58 with 35mm USO rings
EGW muzzle brake
Harris BRS-M bipod and KMW pod-loc

Built by Dolphin Gun Co. in the UK.
Paint job by Valkyrie Rifles in UK.

The round chambers nicely from the 5-round AICS mag but because of the tapered case it will not feed if more rounds are loaded (i.e. in the 10 round mag). The next step is to adapt the AICS frame to take either AK or AR mags to better hold the 7.62 case. The standard remington extractor was changed out until it extracted the smaller cases, but a Sako retrofit is in the making

Why the h_ll use the 7.62x39 you ask? Well, it's a fun project and shoots great. Lapua brass, Berger 125FB and Vihta N120: good to go sub 1/2moa. Long life, zero recoil, low maintenance. It's purpose-built with 100-200y in mind where I do most of my shooting/training.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

Turbo: I shoot reloads only using Lapua brass and 308 bullets (308 barrel, not .311 like the original).

I have not shot a lot with it yet, but so far everything has been within 0.8" at 200y.

The twist will allow me to shoot up to 175, maybe I'll try to make some subsonic ammo and add a can.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

Thanks for all the comments!!!

Why short range: We don't have a lot of LR ranges here, but we do have plenty of 100m ranges so I had this rifle built with "100m only" in mind. I have a BAT custom in 6.5-284 with a second barrel in 30BR. The 30BR is a super cartridge but also a lot of work to make for just plinking, so I looked at was was similar to the 30BR and readily available. I noticed Lapua makes 7.62x39 cases so the decision was made to use this case with a .308 bore to be able to shoot the normal .308 bullets and barrels.

The bullet will no doubt go over 600y, but at 300y and a little fishtail I am not able to keep up with the 308 because of the lower case volume and thus a lower speed. But it was not my intention to shoot over 200y, maybe 300y tops.

As I already have rifles for long range (6.5-284, 6.5x47AI, 7mm-270WSM, 6BR) I did not see the need for another. This barrel should last a long time and the chamber means a no-hassle reload without any kind of case prep. That is a real delight when every other cartridge I shoot is a tight neck version with paranoia case prep.

The rifle uses a good barrel and good reloading components. Although it is not a BR rifle (and never meant to be), it should not shoot any worse than my 30BR for the purpose I will use it for.

The image people have of this cartridge is purely based on the crates of surplus AK ammo. This was actually just another motivation to have this rifle chambered in 7.62x39

So my little AK twig (small stick) should raise some eyebrows on the range. :-D

nvrm I did not notice that you already built it.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

I have an AX stock waiting for me, will pick it up in a week or two and change from this camo AICS to a black action/barrel in a green+black AX chassis.

Scope will be changed to a green S&B 5-25 in a Spuhr mount. Brake has been an EBI-Arms for a while now and will stay. Pictures will follow in a week or two when the thing has gone through it's make-over.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

Neat rifle. Question though:

What is the bullet diameter of Wolf/Brownbear/crap steel case 7.62x39? Its 311, right? What I'm getting at here is proper care must be exercised to be sure that crap is never fired from that rifle! Because its your rifle, I'm sure you would never have an issue - but children/friends could. Be careful, a round if Wolf ciuld make for a BAD day!

Sweet stick though, and very appropriate!

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

I can't believe with all the side folding AKs out there, that you didn't make it a folder! LOL

Subsonic with a can is what this thing is screaming for, great idea!

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

No folder because it is illegal here in NL, might change next year so the new AX is a folder that is pinned in place until then. I decided to get the 1.5 back then because it was not allowed anyway and cost quite a bit more. People and ideas change over the years.

Net job is to get a 308 barrel so that I can reliably feed from the mags, the 7.62x39 is too tapered to feed wel from the aics mags unfortunately and my AK mag idea will not work.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

I did actually

but was afraid I would change my mind later on and regret having a $3000 scope painted

And here I am, a year and a half later, getting a black+OD stock.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

Almost done.

Stripped the camo, phosphated, fluted, AX with alterations to accept the Surgeon. The 7.62x39 got a little brother in the form of an 18" 308 to allow mag feeding.

Still to attach:
- harris
- alpha mags
- Spuhr mount
- Premier 5-25x

Looks neat, however since I have AK's floating around, I have to wonder how bad it would be if a factory 7.62x39 found it's way in there.

Interesting point, but unless it's a maxed-out load, you think three-thousandths will raise pressures to the "kaboom" level? IIRC, Ruger's Mini-30 was initially manufactured with a .308 groove barrel- and had no issues with comblock military ammo...maybe the chamber was sized to accomodate?

well, according to this TV show about "firearms", they built a "1000 yard AK..." My only issue was when they tested it, the range appeared to be all of 150 yards...didn't get to see that 1000 yard mark.

ETA: Dutchman's rifles are something fierce. That .308 build is really slick.

</div></div>Nice looking rig. If that is an 18" barrel, your handguard must be shorter than mine (I have an AIAX) as with an 18.5 inch barrel on mine, it barely makes it out of the handguard. I know they had a 13 inch handguard coming out, but I didn't know it was available yet.

That's exactly what I was thinking... I think that rifle would / will surprise some people.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

Thanks for the remarks!

The handguard is indeed a 13" version. I counted the slots in mine and it is 3-4 slots shorter than the 20" AIAX.

I have actually shot the 7.62x39 at 900 and 1000y. Wind sensitive as hell ofcourse, but I got a couple of v-bulls in on the .5moa F-Class target.

Re: Short range tacticool rifle

That's a very nice purpose-built rifle. I would feel pretty safe in saying that it wouldn't even chamber 7.62x39 surplus or whatever with .311 or greater. I can't believe anyone would cut a sloppy chamber with a .308 barrel EXCEPT Ruger!
