'if" the story is true the ss expected local pd or swat be on the roof, and they had bailed because it was "too hot", it does make sense they would want to confirm is wasn't a friendly, but i don't see how they couldn't tell it wasn't pd or swat.

No. Capturing a bullet streak is comon with a modern digital camera... I've accidentally done it myself. The press photog is likely using a $10K lens on a Canon or Nikon FF, shooting at f/5.6 or f/8 to ensure he'll keep Trump in focus and blur the people behjnd him, running ISO 1600 or better, with a shutter speed of 1/1000 sec or faster. If we knew his shutter speed we could work out the bullet's velocity by the length of the streak. It looks to be about a foot, making me wonder if it was a .22 LR AR variant, like a S&W M&P 15-22. And, the image was taken from below where any downward trajectory would be minimized. Oh, the photog is a member of the press pool, and this image was published. I think he must have been flipping through his images, saw this lucky capture, said "OMG!" and sent it to his editor.

From listening to the audio, the shooter fired three shots, then the SS snipers shot 5 or 6 shots, then more than ten seconds later a final shot was fired by the SS... likely an insurance shot if the shooter was still twitching. The close-up shows his front teeth shattered and there's evidence of bone fragment or other spall/fragment exiting just behind his ear at the jaw level... and it looks like there's a massive wound you can just see the edge of where the bullet path exited his head. Wonder if he raised his head up after Trump dropped and took a round into his open mouth.
I think the roof SS snipers were looking to where the disturbance by the shouting crowd was... at that distance they may well have heard the crowd call out about the man with a rifle... and at the first shot located the shooter and took a few seconds to reposition so as to see past the tree, then dumped a fusillade into the shooter.
The response was impressive, the failure was in letting this Progressive idealistic idiotic kid get a sight picture on Trump and get three shots off. Anyone who registered Republican but donates to Democrats did so to mess with the PA Republican primaries... this was widely encouraged by Democrat PACs during the primaries as a strategy to drain Trump's campaign funds. I'll blame the violent rhetoric from Democrats, including Biden, telling their useful idiote that Trump was Hitler and posed an existential threat to America for this kid's actions... and I bet there was similar talk around his kitchen table at home. Thankfully the kid had what looks to be a 1X red dot sight and not a scope on the rifle, and that Trump turned his head to look at the shooter/sound after the first shot missed. The outcome would have been different if his dad had been a deer hunter and he grabbed the scoped '06.

However, he nailed his elevation, while not difficult at 125, he still nailed it for a brain shot.
