I remember. I think some people made allusions of him to fictional character Paul Kersey played by Charles Bronson.
Before the "incident", Bernie came a couple of times to the factory in which I was an engineer to perform source inspections on electrical equipment before it was shipped to power plants being built in NYC. He worked as a contractor to a large engineering company. I had lunch with him once, and he seemed quite bright and normal.

Also remember what street crime was like in Florida prior to them enacting concealed carry c. late 1980's or early 1990s. Two things happened. First, the criminals started targeting rental cars and tourists, knowing they would not be carrying. And crime against Floridians plunged to almost nothing. Because criminals now were faced with a lottery. Do I get a few bucks? Or do I get my spleen shot off?

Can't remember the exact year but within 5-10 years ago NYC was safer than London.
Around that same time a guy named Mario became Governor and along with Bernie G together they helped reduce crime. No, I'm not a Cuomo fanboy, he simply put all the hood-rats into the state prisons. The state could not build prisons fast enough so they came up with another solid idea, empty out the mental health facilities and repurpose them into prisons. Fast froward real time today, you have people with mental health issues that the police catch only for the courts to release going back prior to the mid 1980's these people would of been institutionalized in a state facility at the low end a Developmental Center and moving up to a Psychiatric Center and when that was still not enough, many of the Max A state prisons had cellblocks specialized for mental health inmates. Now we have another shit show going on because the guy that died was permitted to carry on being a public nuisance and threat after what is it 62 arrests. NYS use to have a good samaritan law that protected the people like this Strap Hanger, that was concerned for his safety along with his fellow travelers enough to take action.
