Switching carbine and tactical uppers

Despite all of the "interchange-ability" of ARs, I rarely, if ever see anyone set up this way.

I have a 308 carbine, and was thinking about getting another upper from a reliable builder (GAP, mebbe) and using the upper and lower as needed.

Is there a down side to doing this? Seems like a viable set up for a "user" not a collector/churner/hoarder of rifles.

Also, I could get a cool Pelican case and a black ninja headband . . . .

(Just kidding on the last part).

I don't see why not. The only consideration would be your stock and trigger.

I wouldn't want to do that with a milspec trigger assembly. Perhaps a Chip McCormick.

It would also be tough to use your carbine if you have a PRS or some other heavy stock made for precision shooting. I wouldn't want to have a precision upper used with some carbine or adjustable stock either.

But if you have something like an A2 stock, why not?

I used my lower on 2 upper, but both were precision uppers (in different calibers).

This is what LWRC suggest for their $2000 uppers. Don't forget the nun chucks and complete set of throwing stars in case you need to stealth up on someone to get to your FFP, shooting isn't always honorable

Seems like a great way to go.

Just make sure your trigger and stock are what you would also use for precision work.

If I was doing this sort of setup, I would use a Geissele trigger and Magpul UBR stock on the .308 platform.

SOPMOD stock would be a decent option as well. Then depending on budget one of the Geissele model triggers.

Stick with a stock like the Magpul UBR/SOPMOD/VLTOR E-MOD with one of Slash's XH buffers and a quality trigger like a Geissele SSA-E (or something similar) and you should have a lower capable of running a shorter (14.5"-16") .308 carbine upper as well as being able to swap over to a longer 20" or so precision upper without sacrificing much if anything.

Thanx for the help.

I and a big guy, and the A2 is "best all around" for me (I break stuff).

And I shoot well with it.

My trigger is a "pre-Obama" DPMS standard that has been made very crisp by a competent gunsmith.

The rifle is a DPMS (back when they made good stuff).

I switched between a mk12 mod 0 upper and a .22 upper all the time on a .223 lower, the Magpul UBR was a great stock to split the difference.

I forgot about throwing stars . . . .

I need a special "Shurikin Stock" . .

Does magpul make one?
